Decisions that either didn’t work out the way we’d hoped or expected, or that were made in such haste that we didn’t fully understand what was at stake. Sometimes the results of these choices are an inconvenience, other times they’re profound, and on occasion they may be life shattering. In all cases, however, we think the same thing—if I could do it again, I’d make a different choice. As they say, hindsight is 20/20.

But is it really?

Batman: Death in the Family is DC’s latest animated feature and it boasts a unique twist. The Blu-ray release is interactive, allowing you to decide how certain events are going to turn out. It’s a 21st Century update to the original “A Death in the Family” comic storyline, in which DC fans were given the choice to call two phone numbers to determine whether Robin lived or died at the hands of the Joker. Infamously, they chose death, forever altering the direction of Batman comics and the DC Universe and creating a pop culture moment that’s still discussed and debated to this day.

That decision, along with several others, is once again yours to make in the animated adaptation, giving you the chance to reverse that decision and let Robin survive the Joker’s attack. Doing that creates a sort of alternate continuity of what might have happened if fans had made that choice back in 1988.

As someone who came to comics after the 1980s, I’ve often wondered what I would have chosen if I had voted on Jason Todd’s fate. I probably would have wanted him to survive—I’ve never been a big fan of death as a gimmick in comics. The fact that Jason’s demise didn’t stick and resulted in a new Robin who has contributed to a current overabundance of Boy Wonders suggests to me that everything would have been a whole lot cleaner if we’d just stuck with Jason in the first place.

The Death in the Family interactive movie makes a pretty good case that you should be careful what you wish for. Much like we’ve been told by every time-travel movie or TV show we’ve seen over the past 35 years, you never know what might result from going back and changing something in the past, even something innocuous. And the death of Robin definitely isn’t innocuous. It had far-reaching effects that extended beyond comics into other media. Batman and the Bat-Family were never the same after Jason met his end.

Yet, Batman: Death in the Family reminds us that even if Jason had survived it, the Joker’s brutal attack on him was still a shocking, traumatic event. It was bound to have some profound impact on Jason’s life, even if it didn’t cut that life short. Discovering those possible outcomes in Batman: Death in the Family is undeniably shocking—and also a lot of fun.

One thing that’s worth knowing is that while Batman: Death in the Family stands alone, it’s set firmly in the continuity of the 2010 DC animated movie Batman: Under the Red Hood. If you’ve seen and enjoyed that movie, you’re probably going to love this one. If you haven’t seen it, you might want to check it out first. Batman: Under the Red Hood gives us our baseline—it’s what’s “supposed” to happen with Jason Todd. Part of the enjoyment of Death in the Family is seeing how the interactivity subverts a lot of those events, something that lands better if you’re already familiar with them.

Batman: Death in the Family is also arriving at a fortunate time. With the world entering its eighth month of a global pandemic, audiences are hungry for something fresh and different to be entertained by at home, and Death in the Family is certainly that. When watched start to finish, the movie isn’t long—the lengthiest variations run about thirty minutes. However, the point is to explore and make different choices, seeing what might result.

I can tell you that my first result was…not good. While entertaining in a sinister way, it was so opposite of what I was hoping would happen if Jason survived that in my second attempt, I chose to let him die just to see some things play out in a way that I was familiar with. My third attempt is where things got interesting. It opened up further choices, none of which were easy to make, and landed me my favorite of the movie’s seven different endings. (I’m not going to spoil it, except to say that it plays like a Grant Morrison-inspired take on Citizen Kane’s “rosebud.”) Credit to writer, director and producer Brandon Vietti for making sure the endings each feel authentic and believable, while remaining dramatically different from each other.

Does giving audiences the ability to choose which way the story plays out make for a better movie? It’s certainly different, but I’m not sure I’d say better. There’s still a lot to be said about a singular story told well. However, “A Death in the Family” is the perfect source material for an interactive movie like this. For all of the comic’s notoriety, the story’s not really anything special. It’s infamous entirely because of the gimmick at its center. Batman: A Death in the Family largely gets rid of the story and fittingly doubles down on that gimmick, putting poor Jason’s fate in the hands of his fans again…and again and again.

I’d like to think they’ll treat him a bit better this time. Only, after experiencing Batman: Death in the Family myself, I’m no longer sure that treating Jason better is better for Gotham and the Bat-Family as a whole. Batman: Death in the Family reminds us that it’s impossible to predict what might happen if you could go back and make a past decision differently—there’s just no way to foresee all the possible outcomes. And if your eyes are closed to something like that, 20/20 hindsight isn’t going to do you much good.

<a From the classic Dick Grayson, to the lesser-recognized alternate timeline Robins like Carrie Kelley, Matt McGinnis and Helena Wayne. From Stephanie Brown finally getting to work at Batman’s side after years of struggling for recognition, to Damian Wayne learning from the first Robin how to truly earn the title he once considered his birthright. From Tim Drake accepting the mantle to bring Batman back from the brink of despair, to the entire flock of Robins led by Duke Thomas in We Are Robin operating without Batman. But we’re here today to express a controversial opinion.

All Robins are good Robins. But Jason Todd was the best.

That’s right. You may have heard the rumors about Jason’s run as Robin. You may have heard that he was “angry” and “violent,” that he was “disobedient” and “reckless” and had a “mean streak.” You may have even heard that he was in some way responsible for his own death since he was the one who arrogantly went after the Joker alone! Well, you’ve been misinformed. We’re here to set the record straight, with our top five reasons that Jason Todd was the best even well before his return as Red Hood.

He Was a Street Punk

Quick! What’s Batman’s defining aspect? No, not the dead parents, the other thing? It’s that he’s filthy, stinking rich. Batman is loaded. Batman has not just money, but Money™. Debuting as a millionaire playboy, Batman’s wealth has only grown over the years, even first graduating to billionaire in The Dark Knight Returns.

It was a fine enough origin for the Golden and Silver Age, as a quick explanation for how he can afford those wonderful toys. But as the 1980s loomed, comics entered a strange and tumultuous time as they reckoned with the social issues of the era. Stories like the aforementioned Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One were giving us a new, darker Batman. Dick Grayson was striking out on his own as Nightwing. And Jason Todd was getting a new origin, one which made him a perfect counterbalance to Batman. Originally a circus acrobat cut from the same cloth as Dick Grayson, the Jason Todd of post-Crisis continuity would take on a new origin more suited to his times as a homeless kid living on the streets of Crime Alley, stealing to survive after losing his parents to drugs and crime. These elements of poverty, addiction and wealth disparity made him perfectly suited to the issues of the 1980s—and, perhaps, today.

He Made Batman Laugh

You all know this story. When Batman first met post-Crisis Jason Todd, Batman caught him in the act of stealing the tires off of the Batmobile. Many forget what came next—namely, Batman getting hilariously punked by his soon-to-be adoptive son. But what’s also forgotten is that even before that, Jason made Bruce LAUGH. No mean feat in general, but even more impressive considering that it was in Crime Alley, on the anniversary of his parents’ deaths.

That’s right! While you may have heard that Batman took Jason in to keep him from growing up to “do wrong,” Batman’s true motives were far less Billionaire Savior of the Downtrodden, and far more relatable: Bruce just liked having the kid around.

Imagine that.

He Was a Feminist

When people think of Jason as the “violent Robin,” they’re mostly thinking of a few specific incidents from Jim Starlin’s run on Batman. What people often forget, though, is the common theme uniting these incidents: Jason specifically lost it on men who were abusing women. From a serial killer who targeted women to a pimp abusing a sex worker to a serial rapist wielding diplomatic immunity to drive his victim to unimaginable ends, it’s clear what most pushed Jason’s hot buttons: abuse and violence targeted at the vulnerable and disenfranchised.

In fact, this aspect of Jason’s characterization is so ingrained that, aside from his name and the codename he would later bear, it’s one of the few aspects of post-Crisis Jason that was established as far back as his pre-Crisis incarnation.

He Disobeyed Batman

You read that right. Jason disobeyed Batman…just like every other Robin! Why? Because otherwise, the story is boring! Who wants to read a story where Batman is right about everything and Robin is some gormless flunky who hangs around obeying every command? Conflict drives action, and allowing Batman to be wrong and Robin right in defying him, adds interest.

And besides, Jason had reasons for his defiance, even when it ended poorly...

He Loved His Mother

With all the flashbacks and retellings of Jason’s death in the years since 1988, it’s easy to forget one key factor. When Jason went after the Joker alone, he was rushing in for a reason that’s all too understandable—to save his own mother.

Unfortunately for young Jason, his mother didn’t return that unconditional love. Seeking to cover her own criminal activities, Sheila Haywood, after finding out that her son was Robin, lied to him and told him that the Joker was gone in order to lure him into a trap. Jason’s death, though at the Joker’s hands, ultimately came from the cruelest source of all—a mother’s betrayal. And yet even after all that, Jason might have survived had, seconds before the detonation of Joker’s bomb, he not thrown himself in front of his mother, trying to shield her from the blast.

Jason was a teenager, and like any teenager, prone to occasional recklessness and fits of temper. But in the end, it was love that ran Jason afoul of the Joker, and love that led him to sacrifice himself for the same mother who betrayed him. But can Batman save Robin from a fate worse than death? Tragedy, revenge and redemption await in this groundbreaking DC film! Who will live? Who will die? Who will watch over Gotham?

Batman: Death in the Family is DC and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s first-ever venture into interactive storytelling that allows fans to choose where the story goes through an innovative navigation guided by your remote control. Central to the short film is an adaptation of “Batman: A Death in the Family,” the 1988 landmark DC comic book event where fans voted by telephone to determine the story’s ending.

Produced, directed and written by Brandon Vietti, Batman: Death in the Family offers an inventive take on the long-demanded story. In the new animated presentation, the infamous murder of Batman protégé Jason Todd will be undone, and the destinies of Batman, Robin and the Joker will play out in shocking new ways as viewers make multiple choices to control the story. And while Vietti's previous DC animated movie, Batman: Under the Red Hood, provides a baseline, the story also branches in new directions and features several characters previously unseen in the original film.

In addition, Batman: Death in the Family also includes four additional DC Showcase shorts: Adam Strange, Sgt. Rock, The Phantom Stranger and Death.

Cast:

Bruce Greenwood

Vincent Martella

John DiMaggio

Zehra Fazal

Gary Cole

Karl Urban

Keith Ferguson

William Salyers

Audrey Wasilewski

Leonard Nam

Jamie Chung

Darin De Paul

Keith Szarabajka

Kari Wahlgren

Peter Serafinowicz

Michael Rosenbaum

Natalie Lander

Grey Griffin

Roger Craig Smith

Charlie Weber

Roger R. Famously, they chose for Jason to die, creating comic book history in the process and shaping the future of the character, who eventually was reborn as the vigilante Red Hood.

But if you had the chance to do it again, would you make the same choice?

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is about to give you that opportunity, only this time you won’t be making the choice by calling a 900-number (remember those?), but by clicking your Blu-ray remote. Produced by DC and Warner Bros. Animation, DC Showcase – Batman: Death in the Family is an anthology of 2019-2020 animated shorts anchored by a new, extended-length short that adapts the iconic Batman: A Death in the Family comic book storyline by Jim Starlin and Jim Aparo. However, in a fitting twist, the Batman: Death in the Family short will take an interactive approach—a Warner Bros. Home Entertainment first—and offer viewers the opportunity to choose which direction the story goes by making choices using their remote control. As if that isn’t fascinating enough, this take on the classic storyline also boasts some intriguing connections to the popular 2010 DC Universe Movie, Batman: Under the Red Hood.

Produced, directed and written by Brandon Vietti, in Batman: Death in the Family, the infamous murder of Batman protégé Jason Todd will be undone, and the destinies of Batman, Robin and the Joker will play out in shocking new ways as viewers make multiple choices to control the story. And while Batman: Under the Red Hood may provide a baseline on which the story is draped, it also branches in new directions and features several characters previously unseen in the original film. Bruce Greenwood (The Resident, Star Trek, iRobot), Vincent Martella (Phineas and Ferb) and John DiMaggio (Futurama, Adventure Time) reprise their Batman: Under the Red Hood roles of Batman, young Jason Todd and the Joker, respectively. Other featured voices are Zehra Fazal (Young Justice) as Talia al Ghul and Gary Cole (Veep) as Two-Face and James Gordon.

Vietti, as many fans likely know, was the director of Batman: Under the Red Hood, as well as the co-director of Superman: Doomsday, the very first DC Universe Movie. He’s also the co-creator and co-executive producer of Young Justice, the mega-popular animated series which offers its own unique take on DC’s pantheon of superheroes. With an obvious closeness to the character of Jason Todd and an understanding of what fans respond to when it comes to DC heroes and villains, Vietti is the perfect director to shepherd such a unique adaptation of a groundbreaking story.

“Batman: Death in the Family is essentially a comic book come to life,” Vietti says. “We’ve paid homage to the 1988 interactive experience of DC’s A Death in the Family comics release by giving fans a unique opportunity to craft their own story through a branching tool that can lead in multiple directions. The viewer gets to choose these characters’ paths, and each choice paves an alternate future for all of the characters and, ultimately, the story.”

In other words, you may think you know the tragic Batman tale that made pop culture waves over thirty years ago, but it’s time to toss those expectations out the window like one of Robin’s batarangs. The interactive Batman: Death in the Family short offers many different ways for viewers to tell the story, with numerous twists and turns in the middle, and several possible endings. Viewers can also choose to allow the story to tell itself, with an included option to let the Blu-ray decide its own path (but really, why would you do that?).

Batman: Death in the Family promises to be packed with Easter Eggs, and touches on a number of compelling themes, including fatherhood, mental health, death, rebirth, revenge and redemption. Along the route, viewers will encounter new, surprising looks at some classic DC characters.

“From the very first navigation card, we wanted to give the audience an impression of what they’re getting into, but then also give them something unexpected—maybe even something they’ll regret, so they have to think twice about every future choice they make,” Vietti explains. “Branched storytelling has to be stronger than just the gimmick of the choices—it has to be rewarding and offer new and worthwhile insights into the characters. It needs to involve you, and keep you searching for the next twist. So, we sought to subvert expectations and do something very different.”

Along with Batman: Death in the Family, the collection includes four additional DC Showcase shorts that were released over the past two years as bonus content for various DC Universe Movies:

Originally attached to Batman: Hush, Sgt. Rock (below) is executive produced and directed by Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series) from a script by award-winning comics writers Louise Simonson, Walter Simonson and Tim Sheridan (Superman: Man of Tomorrow, Reign of the Supermen). The original tale finds battle-weary Sgt. Rock thinking he has seen everything that World War II can dish out. But he is in for the surprise of his life when he is assigned to lead a company consisting of legendary monsters into battle against an unstoppable platoon of Nazi zombies. Karl Urban (Star Trek and Lord of the Rings film franchises) provides the voice of Sgt. Rock. Also voicing characters in Sgt. Rock are Keith Ferguson, William Salyers and Audrey Wasilewski.

Inspired by Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, Death is produced and directed by Sam Liu (Superman: Red Son, The Death of Superman) and written by J.M. DeMatteis (Batman: Bad Blood). In the story, Vincent, an artist with unresolved inner demons, meets a mysterious girl who helps him come to terms with his creative legacy…and eventual death. Leonard Nam (Westworld) provides the voice of Vincent, and Jamie Chung (The Gifted, Big Hero 6) is the voice of Death. The cast includes Darin De Paul, Keith Szarabajka and Kari Wahlgren. Death was originally included with Wonder Woman: Bloodlines.

Attached as a bonus feature on the release of Superman: Red Son, The Phantom Stranger has Bruce Timm (Batman: The Killing Joke) at the helm as executive producer and director, and the short is written by Ernie Altbacker (Justice League Dark: Apokolips War, Batman: Hush). Set in the 1970s, the short find the enigmatic DC mystery man simultaneously playing both omniscient narrator and active character in a story of supernatural comeuppance for evil doers. Peter Serafinowicz (The Tick) gives voice to the Phantom Stranger, and Michael Rosenbaum (Smallville, Impastor) provides the voice of Seth. The Phantom Stranger also features the voices of Natalie Lander, Grey Griffin and Roger Craig Smith.

Adam Strange is produced and directed by Butch Lukic (Superman: Man of Tomorrow), who also conceived the original story, which is written by J.M. The short was initially attached to Justice League Dark: Apokolips War. On a rugged asteroid mining colony, few of the toiling workers are aware that their town drunk was ever anything but an interplanetary derelict. But when the miners open a fissure into the home of a horde of deadly alien insects, his true identity is exposed. He is space adventurer Adam Strange, whose heroic backstory is played out in flashbacks as he struggles to save the very people who have scorned him for so long. Charlie Weber (How To Get Away with Murder) provides the voice of Adam Strange, alongside with Roger R. Cross, Kimberly Brooks, Ray Chase and Fred Tatasciore.

Jim Krieg (Batman: Gotham by Gaslight) serves as co-producer on all five included shorts, while Amy McKenna (Wonder Woman: Bloodlines) is producer. Sam Register is executive producer.

Like most DC animated releases, DC Showcase – Batman: Death in the Family will be available on both Blu-ray and Digital starting on October 13, 2020. However, there are some key differences between the two versions in this case. If you’d like the interactive version of Batman: Death in the Family, you’ll need to buy the Blu-ray edition.

The Digital edition features the Batman: Death in the Family extended-length short in a non-interactive format (a pre-assembled version of the story, entitled Under the Red Hood: Reloaded), along with the other four 2019-2020 DC Showcase shorts, and three other non-interactive versions of the Batman: Death in the Family short (entitled Jason Todd’s Rebellion, Robin’s Revenge and Red Hood’s Reckoning) as bonus features. (Be aware that not all Digital retailers offer bonus features with purchase).

The Blu-ray offers the interactive version of Batman: Death in the Family along with the four other DC Showcase shorts and approximately five minutes of additional content within the Batman: Death in the Family story that is not included in the Digital version. It also features commentary tracks on Sgt. Rock, Adam Strange, Death and The Phantom Stranger, plus one of the linear “Death in the Family” shorts (Under the Red Hood: Reloaded), by DC Daily hosts Amy Dallen and Hector Navarro.

So, will Jason Todd live or die? What will become of Batman and the Joker? Will the truly be a death in the Bat-Family? The answer will once again soon be in your hands. Choose wisely.

Tags:

<a
