Especially when that home is a sentient castle that’s been infused with the consciousness of a psychopathic Bruce Wayne.

There’s a lot happening in the world of Dark Nights: Death Metal right now, but next week Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo are back in action as the core series returns with issue #5. When last we left our desperate team of heroes, they’d managed to channel a multiverse’s worth of Crisis energy into the Mobius chair with the help of Superboy-Prime to give Wally West the chance to use it to defeat the Darkest Knight. Only the Darkest Knight got there first, sabotaging the chair so that it redirected the energy into him. (That’s really bad, guys.) Fortunately, the Darkest Knight has a god to kill—Perpetua—so he doesn’t have time to deal with the Justice League just now. (That’s good. Okay, maybe our guys will get out of this.) So, he leaves them in the care of Castle Bat. (Eh, forget it. They’re screwed.)

Castle Bat, for those of you who aren’t following along, is a living, thinking nightmare version of Wayne Manor powered by the consciousness of its Earth’s Bruce Wayne. And if you know your classic Justice League stories, you know that Bruce has a plan and a means to take down every member of the League, which somehow gets even easier when you’re a giant, multi-storied fortified palace. So, what hope do they have? Is this where things end for our last living heroes? Well, if you know Death Metal, you know that you should probably expect the unexpected. Maybe they’ll get a last minute save. Or maybe they’ll all die in a painful, explosive, fiery demise. After all, that would be unexpected too. Which will it be? Read our exclusive preview of Dark Nights: Death Metal #5 to find out!

Dark Nights: Death Metal #5 by Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, Jonathan Glapion and FCO Plascencia is in stores and available digitally on Tuesday, November 17.

Tags:

dark nights: death metal, first look at dark nights: death metal, dark nights: death metal first look, Dark Nights, death metal, death metal preview, death metal first look, dark nights: metal, metalverse, dark nights; It represents something that’s far more than a difficult battle or world-spanning event. It’s not just a challenge that requires the coming together of the World’s Greatest Superheroes. It’s one that requires the efforts of every superhero on every world within the entire Multiverse. It demands the considerable strength of all super-powered individuals in existence…minus whatever deranged villains are behind it.

Crises only come around once every generation, and they always bring great loss and massive change to the DC Universe. Nothing is ever the same afterwards, and victory is never guaranteed. And that’s when we’re talking about one Crisis. So, imagine what it’ll be like when our heroes have to contend with three…at the exact same time.

How is this even possible? In a word—Perpetua. The deranged supreme being who originally created our universe and now is determined to recreate it feeds on Crisis Energy, and with all the world-destroying she’s been doing, she’s awfully hungry. So the Batman Who Laughs spun up three Dark Multiverse worlds that are each in a constant state of Crisis to serve as Perpetua’s unending source of fuel. In Dark Nights: Death Metal Trinity Crisis, written by Death Metal writer Scott Snyder and drawn by Francis Manapul, our heroes will attempt to end each of the Crises, dealing a powerful blow to Perpetua in the process. But ending a Crisis is anything but simple and standing in their way are the Dark Multiverse versions of the Anti-Monitor, Superboy Prime and Darkseid. What chance does our ragtag band of rebel superheroes have against the triple threat of the biggest bads in DC history? Will they somehow manage to eke out a win? Or will they learn that in this Trinity Crisis, there are infinite ways to die? Check out our exclusive first look to see how it gets started!
faster, and “metal-er“—as the publisher announced its plans for Dark Nights: Death Metal, the sequel to the smash-hit 2017-18 series Dark Nights: Metal, which brought widespread changes to the DC universe and introduced fans to the Dark Multiverse and a runaway-hit villain, the Batman Who Laughs.

A new Dark Nights: Death Metal series means an encore for the original team of hardcore headbangers: the bestselling team of writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo, along with inker Jonathan Glapion and colorist FCO Plascencia. Issue #1 of this six-issue miniseries hits comic book stores and online retailers on May 13, 2020. The series will also include several “Metalverse” one-shots throughout the summer months, expanding the vast world created by the Death Metal storyline.

“I’ve been waiting to do this story since we finished Dark Nights: Metal,” said Snyder. “As much as it was a complete event, we left some threads hanging there for sure. I’d hoped that if people liked the first series enough, we’d have a chance to set up something bigger, and that’s our plan for Death Metal.”

“For all of us, Dark Nights: Death Metal is about the fun factor,” adds Capullo. “24ֱ should be fun, bombastic, and over-the-top. This series is going to be exciting and jam-packed with great ‘metal-esque’ moments that will make fans lose their minds when they see them.”

This new series spins out of the events of Scott Snyder’s Justice League run and the Year of the Villain: Hell Arisen miniseries by James Tynion IV. The Earth has been consumed by Dark Multiverse energy, having been conquered by the Batman Who Laughs and his evil lieutenants, corrupted versions of Shazam, Donna Troy, Supergirl, Blue Beetle, Hawkman, and Commissioner Jim Gordon. Some heroes, like Wonder Woman and the Flash, have made compromises as they negotiate to keep humanity alive in this hell-born landscape. Others, like Batman, are part of an underground resistance looking to take back control of their world. Superman is imprisoned, cursed to literally power Earth’s sun for eternity.

But a mysterious figure provides Wonder Woman with vital information she might be able to use to rally Earth’s remaining heroes to resist the Batman Who Laughs. Can the Justice League break away from the Dark Multiverse and defeat Perpetua?

“Dark Nights: Metal was an absolute game-changer for DC,” said DC SVP and editor-in-chief Bob Harras. “It was a crazy roller-coaster ride that gave us not only the Batman Who Laughs, but a story that was so crazy over-the-top, it kept our readers on the edge of their seats with every issue, and I expect Scott, Greg, FCO, and Jonathan will tell a story with even higher stakes, and definitely more Joker dragons!”

Dark Nights: Death Metal is a six-issue monthly series with issues #1-3 shipping in May, June, and July, then resuming in September, October, and November. Issue #1 will be available in comic book stores and participating online retailers on Wednesday, May 13, 2020. Where The Batman Who Laughs placed Bruce Wayne at the center of a very personal struggle against a massively powerful force, Batman/Superman is all about the connection and conflict between the duo known as the World's Finest, and Joshua Williamson, David Marquez, Alfredo Sanchez and John J. Hill do a stellar job of bringing their eight-decade dynamic to life.

The duality of Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent has long been at the heart of their relationship. Bruce is a young orphan from the urban sprawl who is defined by the loss of his parents. Clark is the farm boy from the country who was molded by his parents' love and support. They're polar opposites not only in their upbringing, but often in the way that they choose to fight crime. Yet, time and time again throughout their 80+ year tenure, their fates have been intertwined for the greater good. And though neither would admit it, they're almost certainly stronger together.

This stark juxtaposition and the strange twists of fate that made them unofficial partners are all things that Bruce is acutely aware of, and much of this issue takes place with Batman as the narrator. It's an insight into his mind and the way he views this work partnership. It's one that he can't get away from and, though he's loath to promote the fact, Clark is where he turns when things get too hard to handle. That's how we find Bruce after The Batman Who Laughs, desperate for help when he hears rumors of a Superman Who Laughs harming children. Clark answers the literal and proverbial call, and from that moment on, the story weaves towards the big reveal and the secret at the dark heart of who Batman is.

No matter your feelings about the two heroes, you can't deny that Batman and Superman are icons. Massively strong to the point of near omnipotence, the pair is near unstoppable, and that's exactly what makes them so desperately dangerous in the age of the Batman Who Laughs, his Joker venom and the newly discovered Nth metal Batarangs that he's using to infect people. This is the heart of the horror that permeates Batman/Superman #1. Not the Batman Who Laughs or his infected vessel, Jim Gordon, but the realization that despite all of their differences, similarities, lives and loves, there is only one thing Bruce and Clark would be better at than being heroes and that is being villains.

That's what the Batman Who Laughs has tapped into, whether or not he realizes it in his chaotic nihilistic haze. But it's something that the newly recovered Bruce is deathly afraid of. He knows that the superheroes who fill the DC Universe are ticking timebombs—perfect weapons who are only controlled by their own goodness, heart and drive to help others. Without that, they're danger incarnate. If they're corrupted, instead of stopping a speeding train, they're directing it towards innocent people. Rather than saving the children on their school bus, these super-strong mutants would be the ones harming them, dangling the yellow vehicle off the local bridge just for a laugh.

It's something other comic series like Watchmen and The Boys have explored. What happens when heroes lose control? Or when they stop working for the people they're meant to protect and start being driven by a much more sinister motivation? It can be fame, riches, secretive government organizations, or something as simple as a man driven mad by achieving his ultimate goal. After all, that's the story of the Batman Who Laughs. He's simply a version of Bruce who did what our Earth's hero never could: he killed the Joker, and in that moment became the very thing he had been trying to stop.

Now, though, Bruce has a bigger fear than the Joker and it's the heroes who he has spent decades working alongside. The ones he has trusted, betrayed, loved and lost. Suddenly, they are the most fearsome adversary he can imagine, and that fear is the great equalizer as once again Bruce and Clark are flung together to fight. But this time, they're pitted against the friends they would usually call for help. And as one of the children they both should've probably helped to escape from the Caped Crusader life wraps his pale hands around Clark's neck, it's hard not to agree with Bruce's final words: "We'd be better villains than they ever were."

Batman/Superman #1 by Joshua Williamson, David Marquez and Alejandro Sanchez is now available in print and as a digital download.

Rosie Knight writes about comics, movies and TV for DC24ֱ.com and DCUniverse.com. that's constantly surprised me about The Batman Who Laughs miniseries is the focus on Bruce as a family man. It's one of the most interesting and important parts of who he is, but it's often sidelined in his more bombastic tales. After dissecting his habit of picking up waifs and strays and training them as vigilantes in the last issue, Scott Snyder and Jock delve into the impact that fathers have on their children in The Batman Who Laughs #5, and this time it's not just about Bruce.

One of the ongoing threads through this series has been Jim Gordon's relationship with his son. James Jr. was a key part of Snyder and Jock's earlier Batman story, The Black Mirror, which revealed that the young man was a sociopath with murderous tendencies. Since then James has been a recurring threat in the world of Batman, even becoming a fully blown serial killer. But here he's been given a strange chance at redemption, enlisted by Batman and his father to help them beat the Batman Who Laughs, utilizing his knowledge of the underground tunnels of Gotham.

Jim Gordon has always been the moral heart of Gotham, the balance between the brutality of its criminals and the single-minded vengeance of Batman. In bringing Jim and his apparently reformed son into his scheme, Bruce has put both of them at risk. That decision is brought to a head with one decisive and twisted play from the Grim Knight. At the end of the last issue we saw Gordon almost eaten alive by a group of violent Robins. Though it seemed like they were representations of Batman's broken children, they were in fact a gift to the Grim Knight from the Batman Who Laughs, each of them a warped clone of Jim's own son, James.

It's a bleak analogy for the trauma that Jim is wreaking on his son by wrapping him up in Batman's plan. James has paid for the crimes he committed and has spent time trying to reform himself and live a normal life. But the choices his father has made—and his priorities which once again skew towards his surrogate son, Bruce—put James, Jr. in danger in every possible world. As the gaggle of his grim sons chew at his flesh, Jim's true son has to do the one thing that he's been trying not to do since he was released—kill. He shoots the violent and tormented versions of himself in some kind of monstrous multiversal suicide.

This issue is all about people paying for the choices of others, with the allegedly responsible parties putting everyone in danger with their ever more reckless decisions. Batman's relationship with Gotham once again comes into play here too. After all, he can easily be seen as the father of the broken metropolis. He took the city under his wing, made it his mission, his passion, and it seems that here he will ultimately destroy it. It's a searing indictment of superheroics, of the idea that one man can change everything. It makes the statement that when you give one person that much power and make them near omnipotent, the only people who will ultimately suffer are the ones who put that trust in them. Here that is Gordon, his son and, of course, the people of Gotham.

Even surrogate father figures are having a reckoning here with Alfred finally losing control over the boy that he raised only to watch him become a monster. The Batman Who Laughs has always been bleak reflection of what Bruce could be, and Alfred is now faced with a harsh truth: no matter how much he loved his charge, looked after him and tried to guide him, it has all been for naught. Could he have taken a more active role? Maybe he could have tried to talk Bruce out of his life as a crimefighter. But as Bruce pushes the self-destruct button on him and Gotham, it becomes all too clear that something, somewhere went horribly, terribly wrong.

The shadow of absent fatherhood looms large over Batman's eight-decade history, and here that loss in that fateful night in Crime Alley comes full circle. Bruce is nothing but a little lost boy, lost in his obsession with fighting crime, lost in his feud with the Joker, losing himself in the toxin that is infecting his blood. Thomas' absence has become the stick that Bruce beats himself with, and as he finally says goodbye to the last vestiges of the man he once was, the place that he dedicated himself to, and the mission that he consumed himself with, it's obvious that he never truly escaped Crime Alley or the trauma that he faced there. Perhaps that's why it was so easy for him to look the abyss in the face and embrace it.

The Batman Who Laughs #5 by Scott Snyder, Jock and David Baron is now available in print and as a digital download.

Rosie Knight writes about comics, movies and TV for DC24ֱ.com and DCUniverse.com. href="/blog/2019/03/15/the-grim-knight-a-dark-reflection-of-what-could-have-been">in last month's one-shot, we're headed straight back into the mind of Bruce Wayne and his new terrifyingly "jokerized" outlook on the world. The core of The Batman Who Laughs has always focused on dissecting the man at its center, and this issue touches on his impact on the lives of others. Now, that includes a lot of people, but The Batman Who Laughs #4 seems most interested in one of the most controversial aspects of his crime-fighting career: The Robins.

The fact that Bruce Wayne takes in young children and trains them to be crime-fighters—in the process, making them fodder for his villainous rogues gallery—has long been a vital, yet incendiary part of Batman. His first sidekick, Dick Grayson A.K.A. Robin, was introduced in Detective 24ֱ #38 in an effort to engage younger readers in Batman's battle against Gotham's criminal underworld. Robin has been a crucial part of his mythology ever since.

In the '40s, the inclusion of a young boy didn't seem too strange. It reflected the childlike nature of characters like Fawcett 24ֱ' Billy Batson and, of course, the potential audience of the comic. Comic books were also pretty child-friendly. Though Batman's origins were dark, by 1941, he was engaged in more wacky and family-friendly adventures—ones which fit the inclusion of a younger hero who could share in the hijinks. But as Batman's comic adventures evolved, the matter of Bruce Wayne's young charges became far more muddied and complex.

The opening pages of The Batman Who Laughs #4 shift vastly from the horror of the last issue. Gone is the pale visage of Bruce's infected face, and instead the page is filled with smiles...with color...with Robin. The brightly costumed boy is flung across the panels as Bruce explains that when he was struggling he would try and see things through the eyes of the young man who was his first true partner. The one who would fly through the air alongside him, who put his life at risk for him, who truly believed in Batman's mission to save Gotham.

It's the first mention of the Bat-Family outside of Alfred in this miniseries from Scott Snyder, Jock, David Baron and Sal Cipriano. Bruce's thoughts aren't just about Dick—though he does seem to focus in on his "circus eyes"—he mentions all of his children and how he tries to see the world as they do. But, naturally, he's only thinking of this as he moves closer to seeing through the eyes of the Batman Who Laughs, something which Alfred is understandably devastated by.

The fact that the wider Bat-Family hasn't appeared in The Batman Who Laughs so far has been a stroke of genius. It's a story about Bruce, his psyche, his demons, and the way that his overwhelming obsession with protecting Gotham has created a world where his life is probably the worst version of any of the Bruces who exist in the multiverse. The choice to not include them makes the introduction of Robin even more jarring and effecting. At the moment that Bruce is to closest to completely losing himself, the first thing he thinks of is "his children." It's an insight into what means something to him, what matters, and what he will miss when he fully devolves into the Batman Who Laughs. It's also a rare moment of truth about his coping mechanisms, because now we know that when things get rough he tries to think about how his innocent and beloved children might see the situation that he's in.

The children here are not just Bruce's, though, as he's engaged Jim Gordon's son into his scheme to beat the Batman Who Laughs. Despite James Jr's past as a sociopathic killer, he's on the path to recovery, a rare thing in Gotham. And this offers up another example of Bruce's willingness to put vulnerable people in harm's way in the pursuit of justice.

So, if we're to accept that Bruce is unavoidably intertwined and affected by Dick Grayson and the Robins, then it makes sense that the Batman Who Laughs has an equivalent group of young charges. Now anyone who's met the Batman Who Laughs before this will know that this horrifying version of Bruce does indeed have a Bat-Family of his own: a horde of chained-up Robins who only say the word “Crow,” which is a cruel reference to the Joker’s weapon that killed Jason Todd during “A Death in the Family.”

It's a twisted and grim reflection of Bruce's choices, and here we see something truly bleak, as Jim Gordon's closeness to Batman once again puts him in the path of danger. Bruce's role as Batman and obsession with avenging his parents could arguably be said to "eat him up," but that phrase takes on a whole new meaning here as we see the Robins (Who Laugh) begin to feast on Jim Gordon.

This is a no turning back moment for the meeting of the two worlds and the two Batmen. There's a finality to the brutality of it, the crossing of the streams which sees the inhabitants of one world potentially killing a key member of the other. Jim Gordon is as much a part of Batman's story as the Robins, and as these two parts of two very different Gothams collide, Bruce and his evil alter-ego finally face off.

Throughout this series, readers have constantly been reminded that the biggest threat the Batman Who Laughs wields over Bruce is the fact that he is Bruce, so he knows exactly what his enemy is thinking at all times. And just as this issue began with Bruce trying to see through the eyes of his children, we end by seeing the Batman Who Laughs' feral wards eating Gordon. As the pair face down, Bruce is ultimately trapped by his predictability. Unable to save himself or the ones that he loves, things seem dire for Gotham's most famous son, and it seems particularly poignant that as he's fired on, all he can see is the color that his first child wore.

The Batman Who Laughs #4 by Scott Snyder, Jock and David Baron is now available in print and as a digital download.

Rosie Knight writes about comics, movies and TV for DC24ֱ.com and DCUniverse.com.
