Aquaman, as the character's been a pop culture icon since his first appearance in More Fun 24ֱ #73 in 1941. Recently, Jason Momoa stepped into the gold and green armor in 2018's Aquaman. However, he wasn’t the first actor to do it! Although Momoa's Aquaman is the first live-action version to gain real traction, Arthur did try to make waves on the small screen in a 2006 pilot for The WB Television Network, developed by the creators of Smallville.

Both versions have more than a few redeeming qualities, but let's take a look at who comes out on top in the Ring of Fire challenge between Aquaman (2006) and Aquaman (2018)!

Voiceover

Beginning at the...well, beginning, both the TV pilot and the movie start out with voiceovers which talk about the world and Arthur's place in it. No offense to Daniella Deutscher (née Wolters), who plays Atlanna in the TV pilot, but I'd rather listen to Momoa warn me of the dangers to come. (I'd rather listen to him read the phone book, to be honest, but that's not part of this battle.)

Victor: Aquaman (2018). I mean...Jason Momoa.

Family Life and Early Years

In the pilot, Arthur "AC" Curry (played by Justin Hartley) is the—spoiler alert—actual, full-blooded prince of Atlantis, and his human father is actually his adopted father. His real name is Orin, and he and his mother were secreted away from Atlantis by an advisor named McCaffery to keep them from getting killed. AC grew up not knowing anything about his past or where he came from, but he was aware of his skills in the water and a "strange empathy" toward sea life.

In the movie, Arthur's half-human/half-Atlantean, which causes him a whole lot of issues when he first tries to wrest the crown from his half-brother (and full-blooded Atlantean) King Orm. Unlike AC, this Arthur knew the truth about his mother and was trained from a young age by a royal advisor, Vulko.

Victor: Aquaman (2006). There's nothing wrong with either of their upbringings, but being the full-blooded prince might have made things easier for AC, in the long run. The "half-breed" moniker really set Arthur back. (And c'mon, Atlanteans. Don't be so prejudiced.)

Mother's Disappearance

In both the pilot and the movie, Arthur's mother has to leave him when he's quite young. In the TV show, the plane Atlanna's piloting goes down in a freak storm over the Bermuda Triangle and a creature drags her down into the depths of the ocean after she entreats AC to get to the surface. In the movie, Atlanna is forced to return home for the safety of her son and Tom Curry, but not before she completely wrecks house (both figuratively and literally) when a contingent of Atlantean soldiers come looking for her.

Victor: Aquaman (2018). Watching Nicole Kidman absolutely slay those soldiers was such a fist-pumping moment.

Looks

You'll have to excuse me for getting superficial here for a moment, but Aquaman is a property that often features fit dudes going around shirtless or wearing suits of armor that leave little to the imagination, muscle-wise. Neither the pilot nor the movie were exceptions to that rule.

Hartley obviously did a lot of training to get in shape for the role of AC, and with his blond hair and lithe physique, his AC definitely wins in the "who looks more like the comic character" contest. And if you asked me in 2006 whose looks I preferred, I probably would have named Hartley. (What can I say? I grew up on the WB's shows.) But—and again, excuse the superficiality—Momoa is, well, Momoa. Those tattoos! Those sun(-in) highlighted locks! Those biceps! That gravelly voice that can be both scary and sensuous! Momoa looks the part of a superhero and carries himself like one too.

Victor: Aquaman (2018). I don't really have to explain this one, do I?

Teacher

In the movie, Arthur grew up training under the tutelage of Vulko, who was a vizier in the Atlantean royal court and an extremely skilled fighter. His training allows Arthur to be able to hold his own against Orm and eventually defeat him. In the pilot, AC got no training whatsoever, but the promise of training to come—from another royal advisor, McCaffery—was expressly stated at the end of the episode and likely was going to be a part of the larger series.

Victor: Aquaman (2006). I love me some Willem Dafoe, but Ving Rhames gave AC Shakespeare's Henry IV, parts 1 and 2, to read as his first task. Hit me right in my Bard-loving heart.

Love Interest

We don't get to learn who the actual love interest of the TV series would have been, but there were two female characters in the pilot who had promise: AC's business partner Eva and Lt. Rachel Torres, who AC saves when her fighter jet goes down while she's patrolling over the Bermuda Triangle. Eva seems nice, and I hope she was going to be a regular in the series (she's hurt at the end of the show, and I'm guessing it could have gone either way), but I was already shipping AC and Lt. Torres after their flirty scene in the hospital. (She also had an intriguing backstory that I would have loved to watch unfold.)

The movie stuck with the source material, introducing Y'Mera Xebella Challa—Mera—into Arthur's life. She's a skilled fighter in her own right and is the voice of reason when Arthur's unsure of what he's supposed to do. She's his equal in more ways than one, and an impressive superhero in her own right.

Victor: Aquaman (2018). Mera might be betrothed to Orm, but she's got a mind—and ideals—all her own. Plus, her water-bending skills are savage!

Villain

Whereas Arthur battled his half-brother and Black Manta, who were out for world domination and vengeance, respectively, AC battled a vicious siren named Nadia who was looking to drag him back to Atlantis to face execution.

Victor: Tie. The movie villains had more time to be fleshed out and their motivations made a lot of sense, but I do love a good monster of the week story. And the practical and special effects to turn Adrienne Palicki into a monster were surprisingly good for the time period!

Weapon

Arthur starts the movie wielding his mother's weapon, a five-pronged trident that can do some major damage. And he ends the movie battling with a three-pronged trident forged for the greatest king Atlantis has ever seen, long thought to be merely a myth, like his namesake’s Excalibur.

AC stabs Nadia in the head with a vaguely trident-shaped harpoon that's not even three feet long and kind of looks like a BBQ fork.

Victor: Aquaman (2018). That little harpoon fork thing AC uses to kill Nadia can't hold a candle to King Atlan's trident.

Ending Song

Because it was a WB show in the early aughts, the pilot ends with an angsty TRUSTcompany song called "Downfall." The movie, on the other hand, ends with a more up-beat number by Skyler Grey called "Everything I Need." Both songs do a good job of speaking to the themes of the story, with lyrics like "You can't see / What I see / The other side of me / Fall back on me / And I'll be the strength I need" ("Downfall") and "Born on the wrong side of the ocean / With all the tides against you / You never thought you'd be much good for anyone / But that's so far from the truth" ("Everything I Need").

Victor: Aquaman (2006). Although "Downfall" is very stereotypically 2006, it seems to be more about AC finding the strength he needs inside himself, while "Everything I Need" is about someone (Mera?) finding what she needs in Arthur. The former feels more applicable to the plot and who Aquaman is.

Winner: Aquaman (2018)

Although the winner here is the movie, it wasn't as much of a rout as Arthur and Orm's final battle, and the pilot and the movie actually have much more in common than I might have expected. In the end, and no matter who "won," they're both about a man finding his place in the world and discovering that there's more to himself than he ever knew—and I'm not just talking about superpowers.

Aquaman, directed by James Wan and starring Jason Momoa, is available on Blu-ray, DVD and digital rental and purchase. We’ve all been simply wonderstruck by Wonder Woman’s golden armor in the kaleidoscopic posters released for Wonder Woman 1984. But we also know our history—this is far from the first time Diana’s fashion choices have set the world abuzz. To maybe a greater extent than any other A-List DC Super Hero, Wonder Woman’s look has been radically interpreted time and again. Take a look at her costume and discover what went into its design here and then read up on five of the most daring pieces in Wonder Woman’s wardrobe below. Then get your speculation engines revving on whether any of them will be seen when Wonder Woman 1984 finally hits screens.

Leisure Suit Lariat

Perhaps the definitive Wonder Woman storyline of the Silver Age and/or Bronze Age began in Wonder Woman #178, when Diana found herself pulled in two directions. While her people prepare for a long-awaited journey for Themyscira to ascend to a higher plane of existence, Steve Trevor, the love of her life, has been framed for murder. Ultimately, Diana chose to remain in the mortal world, abandoning her mantle as Wonder Woman and the incredible powers that came with it. She ALSO chose a brand-new wardrobe, sporting a wide variety of those mad mod outfits of the 1960s. But most memorable of them all was her pure white color scheme, visually representing the tabula rasa she had made of her life. As the first issue of the storyline asks, without her connection to Paradise Island, without her powers, "Who Is Wonder Woman?" Later, the white jumpsuit from this era would return for Wonder Woman’s “One Year Later” storyline, as the signature look of her re-established civilian identity Diana Prince.

Wonder Wetsuit

As fans of Wonder Woman’s iconic 1970s-era TV series can attest, perhaps just as famous as Diana’s costume changes is the way she executes them. Throughout the series, an exuberant 180 degree pirouette is enough to magically change Diana’s street clothes into her Wonder Woman raiments—or whatever variety of her suit is called for. The most unique of these transformations may be her star-spangled wetsuit, complete with a tiara-patterned bathing cap which protects her carefully managed hair as she plumbs the depths of the Pacific coastline. And when a motorcycle chase is called for, Diana’s diving suit doubles as her chosen biker gear…with an added helmet for safety, of course.

Belts and Biker Shorts

And speaking of biker gear, well… Look, before you judge, understand that the '90s were a different time. All the DC Super Heroes were dressing like this, trying to out-extreme and over-edge each other. And with Diana having recently lost the title of Wonder Woman to her rival Artemis of the Bana-Mighdall, can you really blame a gal for trying something different? If you’d like to witness Diana’s journey through the wildstorm of the image-obsessed nineties, the story begins in Wonder Woman #93.

Jim Lee’s 21st Century Woman

It’s easy to forget after the much wider line reimagining that came with the New 52 in 2011, but one of the biggest comic book headlines of 2010 was the dramatic changes that writer J. Michael Straczynski and artist Jim Lee brought to Diana for the historic Wonder Woman #600, in both story and costume. Some frankly dubious claims were made at the time that this was Wonder Woman’s first significant costume change since her debut in 1941—though as we can clearly see from this list, no one putting forth such an idea was grasping a Golden Lasso of Truth. Once again divorced from her past on Paradise Island, Diana dug her '90s blue bomber jacket out of the closet, and paired it with a more sensible top and dark leggings (which some people went MAD over, let us tell you). In retrospect, the whole ensemble actually looks pretty nice. But it wouldn’t be long before Jim Lee drafted a redesign hewing closer to her classic look for the New 52.

Golden Eagle Armor

Eagle-eyed readers have already spotted a likely source of inspiration for the daring look showcased in the Wonder Woman 1984 posters and trailer: the gold-plated, winged armor of writer Mark Waid and artist Alex Ross’s Kingdom Come, as donned by Diana during a climactic battle of the gods. Nothing short of operatic in its scope, the Wagner-invoking Valkyrie look was certainly appropriate in capturing the dramatic tone of the material…though it has a certain Hawkwoman vibe to it. If this was in fact a starting point for the 2020 film’s armor, then, if anything, it seems the costume department may have been exercising RESTRAINT in their design. But who knows? If each new poster and trailer have taught us anything, it’s to expect the unexpected from Wonder Woman 1984.

Wonder Woman Day is tomorrow! Decisions that either didn’t work out the way we’d hoped or expected, or that were made in such haste that we didn’t fully understand what was at stake. Sometimes the results of these choices are an inconvenience, other times they’re profound, and on occasion they may be life shattering. In all cases, however, we think the same thing—if I could do it again, I’d make a different choice. As they say, hindsight is 20/20.

But is it really?

Batman: Death in the Family is DC’s latest animated feature and it boasts a unique twist. The Blu-ray release is interactive, allowing you to decide how certain events are going to turn out. It’s a 21st Century update to the original “A Death in the Family” comic storyline, in which DC fans were given the choice to call two phone numbers to determine whether Robin lived or died at the hands of the Joker. Infamously, they chose death, forever altering the direction of Batman comics and the DC Universe and creating a pop culture moment that’s still discussed and debated to this day.

That decision, along with several others, is once again yours to make in the animated adaptation, giving you the chance to reverse that decision and let Robin survive the Joker’s attack. Doing that creates a sort of alternate continuity of what might have happened if fans had made that choice back in 1988.

As someone who came to comics after the 1980s, I’ve often wondered what I would have chosen if I had voted on Jason Todd’s fate. I probably would have wanted him to survive—I’ve never been a big fan of death as a gimmick in comics. The fact that Jason’s demise didn’t stick and resulted in a new Robin who has contributed to a current overabundance of Boy Wonders suggests to me that everything would have been a whole lot cleaner if we’d just stuck with Jason in the first place.

The Death in the Family interactive movie makes a pretty good case that you should be careful what you wish for. Much like we’ve been told by every time-travel movie or TV show we’ve seen over the past 35 years, you never know what might result from going back and changing something in the past, even something innocuous. And the death of Robin definitely isn’t innocuous. It had far-reaching effects that extended beyond comics into other media. Batman and the Bat-Family were never the same after Jason met his end.

Yet, Batman: Death in the Family reminds us that even if Jason had survived it, the Joker’s brutal attack on him was still a shocking, traumatic event. It was bound to have some profound impact on Jason’s life, even if it didn’t cut that life short. Discovering those possible outcomes in Batman: Death in the Family is undeniably shocking—and also a lot of fun.

One thing that’s worth knowing is that while Batman: Death in the Family stands alone, it’s set firmly in the continuity of the 2010 DC animated movie Batman: Under the Red Hood. If you’ve seen and enjoyed that movie, you’re probably going to love this one. If you haven’t seen it, you might want to check it out first. Batman: Under the Red Hood gives us our baseline—it’s what’s “supposed” to happen with Jason Todd. Part of the enjoyment of Death in the Family is seeing how the interactivity subverts a lot of those events, something that lands better if you’re already familiar with them.

Batman: Death in the Family is also arriving at a fortunate time. With the world entering its eighth month of a global pandemic, audiences are hungry for something fresh and different to be entertained by at home, and Death in the Family is certainly that. When watched start to finish, the movie isn’t long—the lengthiest variations run about thirty minutes. However, the point is to explore and make different choices, seeing what might result.

I can tell you that my first result was…not good. While entertaining in a sinister way, it was so opposite of what I was hoping would happen if Jason survived that in my second attempt, I chose to let him die just to see some things play out in a way that I was familiar with. My third attempt is where things got interesting. It opened up further choices, none of which were easy to make, and landed me my favorite of the movie’s seven different endings. (I’m not going to spoil it, except to say that it plays like a Grant Morrison-inspired take on Citizen Kane’s “rosebud.”) Credit to writer, director and producer Brandon Vietti for making sure the endings each feel authentic and believable, while remaining dramatically different from each other.

Does giving audiences the ability to choose which way the story plays out make for a better movie? It’s certainly different, but I’m not sure I’d say better. There’s still a lot to be said about a singular story told well. However, “A Death in the Family” is the perfect source material for an interactive movie like this. For all of the comic’s notoriety, the story’s not really anything special. It’s infamous entirely because of the gimmick at its center. Batman: A Death in the Family largely gets rid of the story and fittingly doubles down on that gimmick, putting poor Jason’s fate in the hands of his fans again…and again and again.

I’d like to think they’ll treat him a bit better this time. Only, after experiencing Batman: Death in the Family myself, I’m no longer sure that treating Jason better is better for Gotham and the Bat-Family as a whole. Batman: Death in the Family reminds us that it’s impossible to predict what might happen if you could go back and make a past decision differently—there’s just no way to foresee all the possible outcomes. And if your eyes are closed to something like that, 20/20 hindsight isn’t going to do you much good.

<a But can Batman save Robin from a fate worse than death? Tragedy, revenge and redemption await in this groundbreaking DC film! Who will live? Who will die? Who will watch over Gotham?

Batman: Death in the Family is DC and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s first-ever venture into interactive storytelling that allows fans to choose where the story goes through an innovative navigation guided by your remote control. Central to the short film is an adaptation of “Batman: A Death in the Family,” the 1988 landmark DC comic book event where fans voted by telephone to determine the story’s ending.

Produced, directed and written by Brandon Vietti, Batman: Death in the Family offers an inventive take on the long-demanded story. In the new animated presentation, the infamous murder of Batman protégé Jason Todd will be undone, and the destinies of Batman, Robin and the Joker will play out in shocking new ways as viewers make multiple choices to control the story. And while Vietti's previous DC animated movie, Batman: Under the Red Hood, provides a baseline, the story also branches in new directions and features several characters previously unseen in the original film.

In addition, Batman: Death in the Family also includes four additional DC Showcase shorts: Adam Strange, Sgt. Rock, The Phantom Stranger and Death.

Cast:

Bruce Greenwood

Vincent Martella

John DiMaggio

Zehra Fazal

Gary Cole

Karl Urban

Keith Ferguson

William Salyers

Audrey Wasilewski

Leonard Nam

Jamie Chung

Darin De Paul

Keith Szarabajka

Kari Wahlgren

Peter Serafinowicz

Michael Rosenbaum

Natalie Lander

Grey Griffin

Roger Craig Smith

Charlie Weber

Roger R. Hawkman is the second member of Black Adam’s Justice Society of America to be cast, following on the heels of Noah Centineo who landed the role of Atom Smasher earlier this year. The JSA is, of course, the predecessor group to the well-known Justice League and historically features DC’s Golden Age-era heroes.

While details about Black Adam’s Hawkman remain unknown, the character is best identified by his distinct wings, hawk-like helmet and signature battle mace. Debuting in 1940’s Flash 24ֱ #1, Hawkman was originally an Ancient Egyptian prince who was cursed and found himself reincarnating over millennia and on various worlds—notably the alien world of Thanagar, where he served as a police officer. Today, Hawkman is embodied by archaeologist Carter Hall, who harnesses the mysterious anti-gravity Nth Metal, which he controls mentally and which allows him to fly.

Black Adam made a memorable appearance recently at DC FanDome: Hall of Heroes, where star Dwayne Johnson teased the movie with an eye-catching motion comic and revealed at least some of the members of Black Adam's JSA (along with Hawkman and Atom Smasher it also includes the still-to-be-cast Doctor Fate and Cyclone). Set within the DC movie universe, Black Adam has been anticipated by DC fans since 2019’s Shazam!, which first teased the iconic antihero. The movie’s directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who recently directed Jungle Cruise and which also stars Johnson. Beau Flynn, Dany Garcia and Johnson are all producing, while Scott Sheldon will serve as executive producer.

Hodge recently starred in the acclaimed Regina King movie One Night in Miami, as well as the hit Invisible Man remake. Previously, he was seen in 2017’s Hidden Figures, 2016’s Straight Outta Compton and in TV series like City on a Hill, Turn, Black Mirror, Underground and Leverage. While Hodge is no stranger to action and to genre fare, Hawkman will be his first role as a big screen superhero.

Black Adam is due in theaters on December 22, 2021.

UPDATE: Johnson took to Instagram to welcome Hodge to the role as only he can. Check it out here!

Tags:

hawkman, hawkman casting, black adam hawkman, black adam, black adam movie, black adam casting, hawkman in black adam, aldis hodge, aldis hodge hawkman, aldis hodge cast as hawkman, aldis hodge joins black adam, aldis hodge black adam, Dwayne Johnson, dwayne johnson black adam, The Rock, dc films, dc movies, dceu, casting news, Breaking 24ֱ, announcements, new line

Reader CTA:

Read Now

Article Header Layout:

Standard Layout

Fri, 25 Sep 2020 21:31:35 +0000 Tim Beedle 465972 at /blog/2020/09/25/breaking-news-aldis-hodge-set-to-soar-as-black-adams-hawkman#comments Who's Who in The Suicide Squad (and How Likely They Are to Survive) /blog/2020/09/24/whos-who-in-the-suicide-squad-and-how-likely-they-are-to-survive

<?php echo $entity->type; In the process, we finally learned which DC characters will appear in the film…and it's a helluva deep dive into the DC Universe's underworld. Even if you’re a seasoned comics fan, there are probably a few names on the roster that you didn’t recognize. You’re going to want to know these guys, even if there’s a pretty good chance that most of them won’t make it to the final reel. So, to help get you ready for next summer’s most explosive movie, here's a handy guide to the new members of Gunn's Task Force X...

Bloodsport

Real Name: Robert DuBois

Portrayed By: Idris Elba

First Appearance: 1987’s Superman #4

Biography: Robert DuBois is a former soldier who never left the war behind him. He perceives everything around him as a battlefield and suited up as Bloodsport to indulge his militaristic mindset.

Special Talent: He’s a fearless fighter and has been known to pack a Kryptonite bullet or two in his arsenal.

Recommended Media: Bloodsport can be seen in the Justice League Unlimited episode “The Cat and the Canary.”

Odds of Survival: 50 to 1. He’s crazy enough to accidentally blow himself up.

King Shark

Real Name: Nanaue

Portrayed By: King Shark is a shark (but really, he’s played by Steve Agee)

First Appearance: 1994’s Superboy #0 (cameo), 1994’s Superboy #9 (full appearance)

Biography: Nanuae is the son of Kamo, the Shark God. Part human, but with the ferocious nature of a shark, King Shark has made a name for himself with his brutal strength and sharp jaws.

Special Talent: He’s a f**king shark!

Recommended Media: If you still haven’t seen the Harley Quinn animated series—in which King Shark is a regular—don’t waste another second!

Odds of Survival: 4 to 1, as long as he doesn’t run into Roy Scheider.

Weasel

Real Name: John Monroe

Portrayed By: Sean Gunn

First Appearance: 1985’s Firestorm #38

Biography: John Monroe was a student who took his nickname "Weasel" to heart. He became a costumed killer and fought Firestorm several times. Eventually, he mutated into a weasel-like creature.

Special Talent: He’s pretty agile, and possibly feral.

Recommended Media: There’s a criminal named Weasel in the Batman: The Brave and the Bold episode “Night of the Huntress.” It’s probably not the same character, but you should watch the show anyway because it’s good.

Odds of Survival: 50 to 1

Peacemaker

Real Name: Christopher Smith

Portrayed By: John Cena

First Appearance: Charlton 24ֱ' The Fightin’ 5 #40

Biography: Christopher Smith is a pacifist, although you’d never know it by looking at his body count. He believes in peace at all cost and will kill anybody to make that happen.

Special Talent: No, he’s not invisible. That’s a John Cena wrestling bit and it has nothing to do with the Peacemaker character. That being said, Christopher Smith is very good with firearms.

Recommended Media: Until his new HBO Max spinoff series debuts, we suggest checking out the 1987 Peacemaker limited series to see his pacifism in action.

Odds of Survival: He’s John Cena, it’s not even a question. We can’t see him dying in this…then again, we can’t see him at all.

Sol Soria

Real Name: Sol Soria

Portrayed By: Alice Braga

First Appearance: A character named Juan Soria first appeared in 2018’s Suicide Squad #33. It’s possible that Sol is either a relative or a gender-swapped version of Juan, though it’s probably more likely that she’s a new character created for the film.

Biography: If she is a take on Juan Soria, he was a superhero fanboy who had dreams of joining the Justice League. A nanite infection gave Juan the power to manipulate locks, but that wasn’t good enough for his Justice League audition. Dejected, Juan turned to a life of crime.

Special Talent: Juan Soria can pick any lock thanks to the nanites infecting his hand.

Recommended Reading: Check out 2018’s Suicide Squad #33-34 to see Soria’s short-lived tenure in the Squad.

Odds of Survival: 5,000 to 1. We don’t even know who this person is, and their possible comic book counterpart survived for less than two issues.

The Thinker

Real Name: Clifford DeVoe

Portrayed By: Peter Capaldi

First Appearance: All-Flash #12

Biography: Clifford DeVoe is a master tactician who uses his keen mind to commit crimes. Although he possesses no super-strength, he wears a helmet to increase his intelligence and his enhanced brain has proven to be more than a match for the Justice League and the Justice Society.

Special Talent: He’s smart as s**t, and he won’t shut up about it. It’s kind of insufferable.

Recommended Media: The Thinker battles Batman and the Atom in the Batman: The Brave and the Bold episode “Sword of the Atom.” He was also the Season 4 big bad on The CW’s The Flash.

Odds of Survival: Pretty much guaranteed thanks to Peter Capaldi. His characters don’t die, they just regenerate into someone new.

TDK

Real Name: Floyd Belkin

Portrayed By: Nathan Fillion

First Appearance: Secret Origins #46

Biography: Floyd Belkin was a 30th Century man who was rejected by the Legion of Super-Heroes. Using his self-dismemberment powers, he struck back using the name Arm-Fall-Off-Boy. Yes, it’s weird.

Special Talent: He can detach his own arm and use it as a weapon, which I guess is pretty metal. The problem is that they also tend to fall off at inopportune times.

Recommended Reading: Check out TDK’s failed Legion audition in 1993’s Legionnaires #2.

Odds of Survival: 7,000 to 1. We love Nathan Fillion, but we still wouldn’t put too much faith in the survival of a character named for self-dismemberment.

The Javelin

Real Name: Like Cher or Madonna, he has no other name. He’s just “The Javelin.”

Portrayed By: Flula Borg

First Appearance: 1984’s Green Lantern #173

Biography: Javelin was an Olympic athlete who one day said, “Throwing things is fun, but you know what else is fun? Crime. Maybe I can combine those two hobbies...” Low and behold, the world’s first javelin-themed super-villain was created!

Special Talent: He can throw things, which could come in handy on a mission. But then again, it means he’s just as talented as my 5-year-old nephew.

Recommended Media: The Javelin can be seen in the Batman: The Brave and the Bold episode “Scorn of the Star Sapphire.”

Odds of Survival: 30 to 1. Say what you will, but he was able to give Green Lantern a run for his money.

Savant

Real Name: Brian Durlin

Portrayed By: Mary Poppins—I mean, Michael Rooker

First Appearance: 2003’s Birds of Prey #56

Biography: Savant was a rich man who wanted to use his resources as a vigilante. After Batman discouraged his efforts, Savant decided to become a computer blackmailer instead.

Special Talent: Durlin is great with computers, and even greater in hand-to-hand combat.

Recommended Reading: Check out Savant’s tenure with Task Force X in 2011’s Suicide Squad #1-8.

Odds of Survival: 2 to 1. It’s Michael Rooker, folks. Besides, he's already died in a James Gunn film.

Blackguard

Real Name: Richard Hertz

Portrayed By: Pete Davidson

First Appearance: 1986’s Booster Gold #1

Biography: Richard Hertz is a thug who was given powerful upgrades by the 1000 criminal organization.

Special Talent: Hertz can manipulate the energy around him to create a mace and shield.

Recommended Reading: See Blackguard in action in the 2007 Suicide Squad: Raise the Flag limited series.

Odds of Survival: 50 to 1

Ratcatcher 2

Real Name: While Ratcatcher’s cinematic name is unknown, her comic counterpart was named Otis Flannegan.

Portrayed By: Daniela Melchior

First Appearance: Detective 24ֱ #585

Biography: Otis Flannegan was an exterminator who learned how to command rodents. Using an army of rats, he embarked on a crime spree as the villainous Ratcatcher.

Special Talent: Ratcatcher can summon rats, which will bring down the value of any building. If Ratcatcher 2 has the same powers, this means she can control the global economy, making her the most powerful villain of all.

Recommended Media: For a disturbing take on Ratcatcher, check out the Harley Quinn episode “There’s No Place to Go But Down.”

Odds of Survival: 200 to 1. The fact that she’s called Ratcatcher 2 implies that one has already died. This doesn’t exactly bode well.

Polka-Dot Man

Real Name: Abner Krill

Portrayed By: David Dastmalchian

First Appearance: Detective 24ֱ #300

Biography: Abner Krill wears a suit covered in colorful dots, so in a city like Gotham, it’s amazing he could leave the house without getting beat up. During his crime sprees, he threw those dots at Batman and law enforcement officers and each of them served as a different kind of tool or weapon.

Special Talent: He can throw polka-dots at his enemies. Heroes, beware!

Recommended Media: Keep your eyes peeled during the Batman: The Brave and the Bold episode “A Bat Divided” and you just might spot the Polka-Dot Man!

Odds of Survival: 6,700 to 1. There’s a reason nobody uses polka-dots in warfare.

Mongal

Real Name: Mongal

Portrayed By: Mayling Ng

First Appearance: Showcase ’95 #8

Biography: Mongal is the daughter of the alien warlord Mongul, and like her father, she has an appetite for tyranny and violence.

Special Talent: She’s STRONG, and we’re not talking about “help you move a couch” strong. She’s “throw a bus without breaking a sweat” strong.

Recommended Media: Mongal creates some chaos in the Batman: The Brave and the Bold episode “Duel of the Double Crossers.”

Odds of Survival: 3 to 1. The future is female!

A version of this expanding slate of DCTV shows, the recently launched streaming service has greenlit a new action-adventure-comedy series centered around Peacemaker, the master of weapons played by John Cena and soon to be seen in The Suicide Squad, Gunn’s 2021 film that will bring back DC’s infamous team of super-villains. HBO Max has given Peacemaker a straight-to-series order, promising an eight-episode first season. Cena will reprise his role as the character to star in the series, while Gunn—who both wrote and directed The Suicide Squad—will write all eight episodes of Peacemaker and direct several as well, including the first. Gunn and The Suicide Squad producer Peter Safran, who also produces the Aquaman and Shazam! films, will serve as Peacemaker’s executive producers with Cena as co-executive producer.

Details about when exactly the show will take place and what the story may focus on are being kept under wraps, but producers promise the series will explore the origins of the Peacemaker character, a man who believes in maintaining peace at all costs—no matter how many people he needs to kill to do it. (You can get your first look at Peacemaker in action and hear some thoughts from Cena on the character in the Suicide Squad first look that was released at DC FanDome.) Beyond that, fans can expect the series to expand the world of The Suicide Squad beyond what’s seen in the upcoming film.

“Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag,” shares Gunn. “I’m excited to expand The Suicide Squad and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series. And of course, to be able to work again with John, Peter, and my friends at Warner Bros. is the icing on the cake.”

Adds Cena, “I have said before that it has been a tremendous honor and an incredible opportunity to be part of The Suicide Squad and to work with James on what is going to be a fantastic movie. I am unbelievably excited to have the chance to team up with him again for Peacemaker. We can’t wait for fans to see this.”

While more casual DC fans are likely familiar with the Suicide Squad, both from decades of comics and the 2016 Suicide Squad film that introduced the team to the masses, the character of Peacemaker isn’t as well known. Debuting in a short-lived Charlton 24ֱ series called The Fightin’ 5 in 1966—the age of peace and love—he was originally more of a traditional hero who used only non-lethal weapons before being subversively reimagined as a violent vigilante who was willing to kill whoever he needed to maintain peace. Named Christopher Smith in the comics, he’s had a couple of self-titled miniseries since his debut and has fought for teams including Checkmate and, yes, the Suicide Squad. Most recently he made an appearance in Geoff Johns and Gary Frank’s Doomsday Clock.

Peacemaker will be the first DCTV and HBO Max series with ties to DC’s shared movie universe, but it’s not the only series to spin out of a DC movie. Earlier this year, HBO Max announced they had greenlit an original series set in the world of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, the Robert Pattinson-starring Dark Knight reboot that’s also slated to premiere in 2021. That series will focus on the Gotham City Police Department and will shed greater light on the level of corruption found within Batman’s city. In addition, HBO Max will be the new home of all the DCTV shows currently on DC Universe, including Doom Patrol, Titans, Harley Quinn and Young Justice, all of which have new seasons in production.

Peacemaker is scheduled to begin production in early 2021, prior to Gunn getting started on the next Guardians of the Galaxy movie. It will be produced by Gunn’s Troll Court Entertainment and The Safran Company in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Tags:

<a
