Arthur Curry came from humble beginnings, as most of his life was spent exiled from his home, unaware of his noble origins. When he finally took the throne as an adult, he became the most legendary king in Atlantean history.

A founding member of the Justice League of America, Aquaman has fought alongside Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman and held his own against the biggest threats the universe has ever seen. Despite being misunderstood by many as someone who merely “talks to fish,” Aquaman’s super-strength and fighting prowess alone make him a force to be reckoned with. His telepathic abilities make him one of the most powerful minds on the planet. If one chooses to underestimate the sea king, they do so at their own peril.

<div Aquaman, as the character's been a pop culture icon since his first appearance in More Fun 24ֱ #73 in 1941. Recently, Jason Momoa stepped into the gold and green armor in 2018's Aquaman. However, he wasn’t the first actor to do it! Although Momoa's Aquaman is the first live-action version to gain real traction, Arthur did try to make waves on the small screen in a 2006 pilot for The WB Television Network, developed by the creators of Smallville.

Both versions have more than a few redeeming qualities, but let's take a look at who comes out on top in the Ring of Fire challenge between Aquaman (2006) and Aquaman (2018)!

Voiceover

Beginning at the...well, beginning, both the TV pilot and the movie start out with voiceovers which talk about the world and Arthur's place in it. No offense to Daniella Deutscher (née Wolters), who plays Atlanna in the TV pilot, but I'd rather listen to Momoa warn me of the dangers to come. (I'd rather listen to him read the phone book, to be honest, but that's not part of this battle.)

Victor: Aquaman (2018). I mean...Jason Momoa.

Family Life and Early Years

In the pilot, Arthur "AC" Curry (played by Justin Hartley) is the—spoiler alert—actual, full-blooded prince of Atlantis, and his human father is actually his adopted father. His real name is Orin, and he and his mother were secreted away from Atlantis by an advisor named McCaffery to keep them from getting killed. AC grew up not knowing anything about his past or where he came from, but he was aware of his skills in the water and a "strange empathy" toward sea life.

In the movie, Arthur's half-human/half-Atlantean, which causes him a whole lot of issues when he first tries to wrest the crown from his half-brother (and full-blooded Atlantean) King Orm. Unlike AC, this Arthur knew the truth about his mother and was trained from a young age by a royal advisor, Vulko.

Victor: Aquaman (2006). There's nothing wrong with either of their upbringings, but being the full-blooded prince might have made things easier for AC, in the long run. The "half-breed" moniker really set Arthur back. (And c'mon, Atlanteans. Don't be so prejudiced.)

Mother's Disappearance

In both the pilot and the movie, Arthur's mother has to leave him when he's quite young. In the TV show, the plane Atlanna's piloting goes down in a freak storm over the Bermuda Triangle and a creature drags her down into the depths of the ocean after she entreats AC to get to the surface. In the movie, Atlanna is forced to return home for the safety of her son and Tom Curry, but not before she completely wrecks house (both figuratively and literally) when a contingent of Atlantean soldiers come looking for her.

Victor: Aquaman (2018). Watching Nicole Kidman absolutely slay those soldiers was such a fist-pumping moment.

Looks

You'll have to excuse me for getting superficial here for a moment, but Aquaman is a property that often features fit dudes going around shirtless or wearing suits of armor that leave little to the imagination, muscle-wise. Neither the pilot nor the movie were exceptions to that rule.

Hartley obviously did a lot of training to get in shape for the role of AC, and with his blond hair and lithe physique, his AC definitely wins in the "who looks more like the comic character" contest. And if you asked me in 2006 whose looks I preferred, I probably would have named Hartley. (What can I say? I grew up on the WB's shows.) But—and again, excuse the superficiality—Momoa is, well, Momoa. Those tattoos! Those sun(-in) highlighted locks! Those biceps! That gravelly voice that can be both scary and sensuous! Momoa looks the part of a superhero and carries himself like one too.

Victor: Aquaman (2018). I don't really have to explain this one, do I?

Teacher

In the movie, Arthur grew up training under the tutelage of Vulko, who was a vizier in the Atlantean royal court and an extremely skilled fighter. His training allows Arthur to be able to hold his own against Orm and eventually defeat him. In the pilot, AC got no training whatsoever, but the promise of training to come—from another royal advisor, McCaffery—was expressly stated at the end of the episode and likely was going to be a part of the larger series.

Victor: Aquaman (2006). I love me some Willem Dafoe, but Ving Rhames gave AC Shakespeare's Henry IV, parts 1 and 2, to read as his first task. Hit me right in my Bard-loving heart.

Love Interest

We don't get to learn who the actual love interest of the TV series would have been, but there were two female characters in the pilot who had promise: AC's business partner Eva and Lt. Rachel Torres, who AC saves when her fighter jet goes down while she's patrolling over the Bermuda Triangle. Eva seems nice, and I hope she was going to be a regular in the series (she's hurt at the end of the show, and I'm guessing it could have gone either way), but I was already shipping AC and Lt. Torres after their flirty scene in the hospital. (She also had an intriguing backstory that I would have loved to watch unfold.)

The movie stuck with the source material, introducing Y'Mera Xebella Challa—Mera—into Arthur's life. She's a skilled fighter in her own right and is the voice of reason when Arthur's unsure of what he's supposed to do. She's his equal in more ways than one, and an impressive superhero in her own right.

Victor: Aquaman (2018). Mera might be betrothed to Orm, but she's got a mind—and ideals—all her own. Plus, her water-bending skills are savage!

Villain

Whereas Arthur battled his half-brother and Black Manta, who were out for world domination and vengeance, respectively, AC battled a vicious siren named Nadia who was looking to drag him back to Atlantis to face execution.

Victor: Tie. The movie villains had more time to be fleshed out and their motivations made a lot of sense, but I do love a good monster of the week story. And the practical and special effects to turn Adrienne Palicki into a monster were surprisingly good for the time period!

Weapon

Arthur starts the movie wielding his mother's weapon, a five-pronged trident that can do some major damage. And he ends the movie battling with a three-pronged trident forged for the greatest king Atlantis has ever seen, long thought to be merely a myth, like his namesake’s Excalibur.

AC stabs Nadia in the head with a vaguely trident-shaped harpoon that's not even three feet long and kind of looks like a BBQ fork.

Victor: Aquaman (2018). That little harpoon fork thing AC uses to kill Nadia can't hold a candle to King Atlan's trident.

Ending Song

Because it was a WB show in the early aughts, the pilot ends with an angsty TRUSTcompany song called "Downfall." The movie, on the other hand, ends with a more up-beat number by Skyler Grey called "Everything I Need." Both songs do a good job of speaking to the themes of the story, with lyrics like "You can't see / What I see / The other side of me / Fall back on me / And I'll be the strength I need" ("Downfall") and "Born on the wrong side of the ocean / With all the tides against you / You never thought you'd be much good for anyone / But that's so far from the truth" ("Everything I Need").

Victor: Aquaman (2006). Although "Downfall" is very stereotypically 2006, it seems to be more about AC finding the strength he needs inside himself, while "Everything I Need" is about someone (Mera?) finding what she needs in Arthur. The former feels more applicable to the plot and who Aquaman is.

Winner: Aquaman (2018)

Although the winner here is the movie, it wasn't as much of a rout as Arthur and Orm's final battle, and the pilot and the movie actually have much more in common than I might have expected. In the end, and no matter who "won," they're both about a man finding his place in the world and discovering that there's more to himself than he ever knew—and I'm not just talking about superpowers.

Aquaman, directed by James Wan and starring Jason Momoa, is available on Blu-ray, DVD and digital rental and purchase. Wait… What? It’s true, and yes, the mainstream stories—the stuff even the most casual fan’s grandma has heard of—primarily involve capes, cowls and gauntlets. But there was a whole line devoted to horror-based comics as well, including DC titles dating back to the early 1950s.

What’s that got to do with the 2018 movie Aquaman, you ask? Well, one prolific filmmaker who made a name for himself in the horror movie world with the Saw, Insidious and—though tending more toward the supernatural—The Conjuring franchises made his big screen superhero debut in a big, big way with Aquaman, the most successful DC Super Hero film to date. However, when you watch the movie (and yes, I know you have, but on the off-chance you haven’t, what are you waiting for?!), you’ll see a nod or two to his roots (the Trench sequence, anyone? Eeek!)…and an undersea vehicle chase or two to rival anything fast or furious.

Ladies and gents, let’s chat with director James Wan about all things Aquaman (or as many as we can fit in a Daily Star column)!

What was it about this character as brought to life by Jason Momoa that drew you in and made you want to make Aquaman?

What really attracted me to this project was the idea that Aquaman is a superhero whose origin story had never quite been done before—at least not on the big screen and never on this scale. I don’t think people quite knew who this guy was or where he comes from. Or they’re familiar with him from the Super Friends TV show, where he was always presented in a somewhat jokey light. That’s what ultimately made this project so exciting for me—I got to take this character that people think they know and present him to the world in a way that’s tough and cool and really badass. And Jason is an amazing Aquaman. I think people get a kick out of seeing Jason play him and fall in love with his sort of roguish charm.

So, that was a big part of the attraction—to come and play with Jason Momoa and tell this character’s story onscreen. But, obviously, the other big part of it was getting to take the audience on this crazy adventure into an amazing world we’ve never seen before—the world of Atlantis and the seven kingdoms, and all the different cultures that people got to experience in this movie. All of that was incredibly exciting to me as a filmmaker.

So, was making the movie its own kind of adventure for you, as both a filmmaker and a movie fan yourself?

Oh, it definitely was. (laughs) For the longest time I’d wanted to make a world-creation movie, so this was a dream project. It was slightly different from what I went through on Fast and Furious 7, which was also a really massive film. But with this one, I got to design and visually create my own world on the biggest canvas imaginable—one that is entirely underwater.

I think that the most fun I’ve had on any of my movies was in the production design process on Aquaman, designing the aesthetic of this magical, other-worldly kingdom—the kingdom of Atlantis—and creating an entire civilization and all the creatures and environments and technologies of that world. It was just incredible. Basically, your imagination is your limit—you can just keep creating things that you’ve never seen before.

Aquaman was obviously a big visual effects movie, but one of your signatures as a director are the cool, inventive practical effects in your films. Is that something you integrated into this production?

Yes, my background is definitely filming with practical effects, and it’s something I just love doing. So, making a film with such a huge visual effects component was, for me, a big step in a different direction. However, it’s one that I embraced and ultimately really enjoyed because it enabled me to kind of create anything I could imagine, and that was the coolest thing to be able to do on a movie like this.

Having said that, if there was something I could achieve on set with practical effects, I would always lean into it. We have all these strange, fascinating creatures in the film, and I still love having creatures be depicted by an actor in some kind of prosthetic suit. So, we did it that way wherever possible, then visual effects would come in and augment them and take them to a whole different level. So, it’s having access to all these great filmmaking tools, but ultimately understanding that they’re just filmmaking tools. The most important thing about a film is still and always will be the storytelling and creating characters that you’re engaged with.

Can you talk about the journey that Aquaman, aka Arthur Curry, takes in this film?

One of the things I love about Aquaman is that he is a superhero who ultimately feels like he doesn’t quite fit in. He’s a character who’s kind of stuck between two worlds—people on the surface world don’t quite trust him because he’s Atlantean and the people of Atlantis don’t trust him either because they see him as a surface-dweller. So, part of the journey for Arthur is trying to be accepted for who he is, and ultimately to accept himself and actually believe in himself. That, to me, is a very interesting arc for a superhero to go through.

That outsider aspect of the character is also what makes Jason such a terrific actor to embody Aquaman, and something he identifies with as well, as someone who was born in Hawaii and raised in Middle America. I also can understand it, as a guy who was born in Malaysia and then having this strong Australian upbringing—and now living in America. (laughs) So, it felt sort of topical and relevant in the world we live in today.

A lot of comics fans were really excited about seeing Black Manta on screen, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen.

We meet Black Manta at the start of the film and, at that moment, he’s not quite Black Manta yet; he’s still just David Kane. He and his father are leading this mercenary pirate team that hijacks a submarine. That’s how his character comes face-to-face with Aquaman for the first time. But then, through the course of events, his father is killed and he blames Aquaman for his death. So, it’s a classic sort of revenge motivation for his character. From that moment on, he just hates Aquaman and becomes single-minded in his approach to one thing: eradicating Aquaman off the face of this planet. Having said that, Black Manta is not the ‘Big Bad’ of this film—it’s Patrick Wilson’s character, King Orm, who is Arthur’s half-brother.

What can you tell us about filming the epic fight that plays out between Aquaman and King Orm?

Oh, it was an incredible experience to dream up the fights between Jason and Patrick, and also to design a fighting style that we haven’t quite seen before—because it’s set in Atlantis and takes place underwater. So, I got together with my stunt and visual effects teams to devise this epic showdown between these two characters, who confront each other in what we call the Combat of the Kings. They basically stage their battle inside this massive underwater coliseum built into the cone of a submerged volcano. (laughs) You see this crazy underwater fight sequence and watch these two brothers surrounded by steam and lava while they duke it out for the right to the throne of Atlantis. And because it’s this underwater environment, there’s no gravity holding them down, so it feels like they’re flying through space.

Also, I felt for Patrick because I made him say these really, really outrageous things in this film, like, ‘War is coming to the surface and I’m bringing the wrath of the seven seas with me!’ (laughs) But kudos to Patrick Wilson, whom I know so well and fully trust, because I knew that if I put these words in his mouth, he would make it work.

Last question: Do you recall exactly what you were hoping audiences experienced when they saw Aquaman for the first time?

I wanted to tell this story very much in the spirit of the classic action-adventure quest films I loved growing up—that kind of epic storytelling with big romance, a lot of humor and really fun adventures. So, I really just hoped that people would come along on this crazy rollercoaster ride and that, at the end of it, they’d feel like they’d taken the journey with Arthur and walk out inspired.
outside, but thankfully DC has given us plenty of virtual worlds to explore over the years. Sure, it’s not the same, but gaming has always had an uncanny ability to bring people together in ways that allow our imaginations to run wild.

That’s why we’re kicking off a special blog series here at the Daily Star to celebrate DC gaming past, present, and future. So join us as we take a trip down memory lane, offer up some tips and tricks for you to try out right now, and of course speculate about what in the world we could be cooking up on the gaming front as a part of the DC FanDome event.

After all, if DC FanDome is our big boss battle, we’d better level up ASAP. So let’s get started by venturing into the world of Fortnite!

It’s an Aquaman Summer

You know what they always say: sun’s out…tridents out?

It might not roll off the tongue quite as nicely, but Aquaman splashing down in Fortnite’s new Chapter 2 - Season 3 Battle Pass is definitely the summer adventure we’ve all been waiting for. That means it’s time to grab some sunscreen and get ready to dive into everything you need to know about the King of the Seven Seas taking this maiden voyage.

In order to unlock your Aquaman Outfit, you’ll have to complete a series of challenges. And, in doing so, you’ll get a special Aquaman-themed reward each step of the way. But the fun doesn’t end there! That’s because there’s a second Outfit waiting for you at the end of the line if you’re up to the task: the Arthur Curry style (if you’re wondering what that style is exactly, it’s a shirtless Aquaman with tattoos on full display…kind of a big deal).

So how can we at this humble Daily Star blog help you ride the waves to these riches? The good news is that we can definitely get you started, but then the rest will be in your hands as the Fortnite Battle Pass continues to unfold.

Aquaman Challenges

Let’s begin with what you can already tackle right now. From there, you’ll have the chance to participate in one challenge each week. Expect new challenges to appear in Fortnite every Thursday, which you can find in the Battle Pass menu under Map Challenges.

Challenge #1 is pretty straightforward: you just have to jump into a whirlpool. The trick lies in finding it, though, which you can do with the help of your Battle Pass map and an aerial drop over The Fortilla collection of islands.

When you leave the Battle Bus, fly over the general vicinity of The Fortilla and keep your eyes peeled for some unmistakable swirls: those will be your ticket to victory. After your eagle eyes have spotted them, the only thing left to do will be to glide straight into the whirlpool…but be prepared for a quick exit! Pretty much as soon as you enter, you’ll be spit back out by its currents and you’ll be gliding again, but you’ll also have your first Aquaman reward under your belt.

Oh, and we of course can’t forget about that Arthur Curry Outfit style unlock. Again, this won’t be available until you’ve had a chance to complete all of the other Aquaman weekly challenges. But, when you’ve emerged victorious from those missions, you’ll have the default Aquaman look in your toolbox. Be sure to snag that first because you must be wearing that Outfit in order to unlock the variant. So throw it on, head to Gorgeous Gorge, and dive over the waterfall there. With that epic leap, you’ll have all of the Aquaman rewards and Outfits available, and Atlanteans everywhere will envy you.

DC and Fortnite

As fun as this new Aquaman integration is, it’s actually not the first time DC and Epic Games have worked together to bring the DC universe into the world of Fortnite.

For those of you who might remember, the very first crossover happened last fall with the one and only Batman. In celebration of Batman’s 80th anniversary, Fortnite launched a special set of Batman and Catwoman Outfits and even recreated Gotham City as a part of a special rift zone. Within this unique interpretation of Gotham, you could find iconic landmarks like Wayne Tower, the ACE Chemical Processing Plant, and the Monarch Theatre in addition to special accessories and challenges that could help establish you as the newest hero on the streets.

But we didn’t stop there! Next up was a crossover tied to the Birds of Prey film, and it focused on the infamous Harley Quinn. Players had the chance to pick up a special Harley Quinn Outfit showcasing her unforgettable “Lil Monster XoXo” look, participate in mischievous challenges, and collect some of Harley’s favorite tools (you know, things like a giant “Punchline” pickaxe). It also gave DC fans their first cinematic taste of Jack Kirby’s Fourth World with the appearance of Steppenwolf as the movie’s villain.

In the movie, fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act at the end of Batman v Superman, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

“Since I got here 14 months ago, the chant to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut has been a daily drumbeat in our offices and inboxes,” said Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, Warner Media Entertainment and Direct-To-Consumer. “Well, the fans have asked, and we are thrilled to finally deliver. At the end of the day, it really is all about them and we are beyond excited to be able to release Zack’s ultimate vision for this film in 2021. This could never have happened if it weren’t for the hard work and combined efforts of the teams at HBO Max and Warner Bros. Pictures.”

In the two and a half years since Justice League’s release, several of the movie’s heroes have broken out with franchises of their own, including Momoa’s Aquaman and Gadot’s Wonder Woman, the latter of whom will return to theaters later this year in Wonder Woman 1984. But Snyder’s Justice League marked his final film in the series, and fans have long wondered what his director’s cut might look like. Sounds like they won’t have much longer to wait to find out.

If you’re hungry for more info, check out today’s feature in The Hollywood Reporter. For now, though, let us know what you think! Both his hit solo film and his comic's all-new creative team have brought a breath of fresh air—er, water—to the Atlantean king. But he's not the only one reaping the benefits of the new exposure. After all, every good king needs an equally amazing queen, and while Mera might be a little reluctant to pick up that mantle from time to time, she's more than strong enough to shoulder the burden. Mera and Arthur's friendship and eventual romance form a critically important backbone for Aquaman lore.

If you're new to the underwater side of the DC Universe, here are the basics. Arthur, as you probably know (and if you don't, go see the movie!) was the half-human son of Atlanna, an Atlantean queen, and Tom Curry, a human lighthouse keeper. In his most recent origins, he was raised mostly on land—though some of his vintage stories feature him being raised by dolphins, like an aquatic Tarzan.

Gotta love the Silver Age!

Anyway, one of Arthur's biggest connections to Atlantis, you know, aside from his mom, was Mera—who, technically isn’t from Atlantis at all. Mera is royalty from the kingdom of Xebel, which is a bit more complicated than just a neighboring underwater community.

The short version is that Xebel was once a part of the ancient Atlantean empire, but after a series of civil wars, Xebel was magically cast into another dimension to be used as a sort of penal colony—almost like Krypton's Phantom Zone, but not quite. For some time, Xebel was called "Dimension Aqua," but eventually as more and more modern contact was made between the present day Atlanteans and the people of Xebel, some bridges were rebuilt and the old name was reinstated.

Arthur and Mera's relationship was one of those bridges, though it took some time for that part of the story to develop. In the classic comics, Mera and Arthur were quickly wed and had a baby named Arthur Curry Jr—or, uh, Aquababy, because why not, right?

But as the landscape of comics changed and evolved, so did Arthur and Mera's dynamic. Arthur's complicated origins shifted and changed into the version we'd recognize today and the history of Mera and Xebel became clear. Things between them were tricky, but tricky in a way that helped flesh out countless corners of Atlantean lore. Mera's allegiance to both Xebel and Atlantis mirrors Arthur's allegiance to both Atlantis and the surface world, making them uniquely suited for one another even on a purely diplomatic level.

There aren't many people in the world, after all, who can really understand the delicate nuances of inter-kingdom dynamics and politics.

Interestingly enough, Arthur and Mera also share one of DC's most consistently inconsistent marriages. They've been married and, uh, un-married ("divorced" wouldn't be accurate in this situation, really, because it's typically not a break up, but some sort of continuity change that gets in the way). But even when they're not officially together, they have a way of finding one another when it matters most. They're almost magnetic in that way. Two characters who are frequently thrown into very personal conflicts that isolate them from the heroes around them, but who eventually circle back around for each other.

In recent years, Xebel's history has been updated yet again to remove the whole extra-dimensional aspect. It's now readily accessible from Atlantis itself, rather than a place that can only be found through a portal in the Bermuda Triangle (though that's still a really awesome sentence to type), but the conflicts between the kingdoms and the surface world are just as tricky as ever.

Mera and Arthur don't need one another to exist. Their stories work perfectly fine without the other's help. But they certainly aren't hurt by their relationship to the other either, and it’s one of the DC Universe’s most compelling love stories. It’s little wonder it’s being explored in an entirely new way, and from Mera’s perspective, in Mera: Tidebreaker, DC’s first foray into the world of Young Adult graphic novels. It has all the elements of a great fairy tale—warring kingdoms, secret romance, fantastic creatures, magic.
