Television a series order. Based on the critically acclaimed comic book series from Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli, the live action HBO Max series is set to star Rosario Dawson (Briarpatch, Rent, Sin City) and Benjamin Bratt (Law & Order, Traffic) in lead roles and, like the comic, is set amid a second American civil war. Patino, who was a writer and executive producer on HBO’s Emmy-nominated Westworld, wrote the pilot, which was directed by DuVernay. Patino will write the remainder of the limited series’ episodes and will serve as showrunner. He’ll also serve as executive producer along with DuVernay when the series starts production in 2021.

DMZ will chronicle the harrowing journey of fearless and fierce medic Alma Ortega (Dawson), who sets out on a harrowing journey to find the son she lost in the evacuation of New York City after the outbreak of a second civil war which has left Manhattan a demilitarized zone (DMZ). Throwing gasoline on the flames of that conflict is Parco Delgado (Bratt), the popular—and deadly—leader of one of the most powerful gangs in the DMZ. He wants to rule this new world—and will stop at nothing to secure that outcome. In this adrenalized and expansive drama which examines a stark political and cultural divide in American society, Alma must contend with the gangs, militias, demagogues and warlords that control this lawless no man’s land. In doing so, she becomes the unlikely source of what everyone here has lost…hope.

Along with Dawson and Bratt, DMZ will star Hoon Lee (Banshee, Warrior), Freddy Miyares (When They See Us, The L Word: Generation Q) and Jordan Preston Carter (The Haves and the Have Nots).

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to bring this epic to the screen with my boundary-pushing partners at WBTV and HBO Max, a sublime cast led by Rosario and Benjamin, and my partner and friend, the inimitable and ever-inspiring Ava DuVernay,” said Patino in the announcement’s press release. “DMZ offers up an explosive playground which, more than anything else, exalts the resilience of community and the human spirit. I can’t wait to welcome the die-hard fans of the comic books and new viewers alike to this intoxicating, haunting and inspiring world.”

Added Sarah Aubrey, HBO Max’s head of original content, “DMZ’s unflinching story of a country torn apart resonates eerily and profoundly amid our current state of the union. With the powerhouse visionary team of Ava and Roberto at the helm, bringing this critically acclaimed DC gem to life promises to entertain and inspire hope.”

The DMZ comic made its debut in 2005 under the Vertigo imprint and ran for a total of 72 issues before wrapping up in 2012. Written by Wood and drawn by Burchielli, the comic, which has only become more timely since its debut, envisioned a second civil war after a collective of middle American militias revolted against the U.S. government, eventually forcing them into a stalemate with Manhattan stuck in between and being declared a DMZ. The hero of the comic was a young photojournalist named Matty Roth, who scored what he saw as a dream gig following a veteran war journalist into the heart of the DMZ. As you can imagine, things go frighteningly wrong from there.

While the release date for the DMZ limited event series is not yet known, it’ll live alongside several other acclaimed DCTV series when it does make its way to HBO Max, including Titans, Harley Quinn, Watchmen, Batwoman and Stargirl, along with previously announced TV shows set in the worlds of upcoming movies The Batman and The Suicide Squad. Yet, with its near-prescient view of modern division, it’s clear DMZ will stand apart as a powerful futuristic tale of what could happen in a society gone wrong.

So, what do you think, DC fans? Have you read the DMZ comic? Are you excited for the series? Share your thoughts on social media, and keep an eye on DC24ֱ.com for more news on DMZ and other DCTV shows as it breaks!

Tags:

dmz, dmz tv show, dmz tv series, dmz comic book, dmz comic series, hbo max, dmz hbo max series, roberto patino, ava duvernay, ava duvernay dmz series, ava duvernay dmz hbo max series, Manhattan, New York, second civil war, second american civil war, vertigo, vertigo comics, dc vertigo, brian wood, riccardo burchielli, Breaking 24ֱ, dctv, #dctv, dctv news

Reader CTA:

Read Now

Article Header Layout:

Standard Layout

Thu, 19 Nov 2020 03:30:36 +0000 Tim Beedle 466578 at /blog/2020/11/19/get-in-the-zone-dmz-limited-event-series-coming-to-hbo-max#comments Battle of the Aquamen /blog/2020/11/18/battle-of-the-aquamen

<?php echo $entity->type; ?>

Battle of the Aquamen

Mandy Curtis

Wednesday, November 18, 2020 - 12:00

It's likely that you're familiar with Arthur Curry, a.k.a. Aquaman, as the character's been a pop culture icon since his first appearance in More Fun 24ֱ #73 in 1941. Recently, Jason Momoa stepped into the gold and green armor in 2018's Aquaman. However, he wasn’t the first actor to do it! Although Momoa's Aquaman is the first live-action version to gain real traction, Arthur did try to make waves on the small screen in a 2006 pilot for The WB Television Network, developed by the creators of Smallville.

Both versions have more than a few redeeming qualities, but let's take a look at who comes out on top in the Ring of Fire challenge between Aquaman (2006) and Aquaman (2018)!

Voiceover

Beginning at the...well, beginning, both the TV pilot and the movie start out with voiceovers which talk about the world and Arthur's place in it. No offense to Daniella Deutscher (née Wolters), who plays Atlanna in the TV pilot, but I'd rather listen to Momoa warn me of the dangers to come. (I'd rather listen to him read the phone book, to be honest, but that's not part of this battle.)

Victor: Aquaman (2018). I mean...Jason Momoa.

Family Life and Early Years

In the pilot, Arthur "AC" Curry (played by Justin Hartley) is the—spoiler alert—actual, full-blooded prince of Atlantis, and his human father is actually his adopted father. His real name is Orin, and he and his mother were secreted away from Atlantis by an advisor named McCaffery to keep them from getting killed. AC grew up not knowing anything about his past or where he came from, but he was aware of his skills in the water and a "strange empathy" toward sea life.

In the movie, Arthur's half-human/half-Atlantean, which causes him a whole lot of issues when he first tries to wrest the crown from his half-brother (and full-blooded Atlantean) King Orm. Unlike AC, this Arthur knew the truth about his mother and was trained from a young age by a royal advisor, Vulko.

Victor: Aquaman (2006). There's nothing wrong with either of their upbringings, but being the full-blooded prince might have made things easier for AC, in the long run. The "half-breed" moniker really set Arthur back. (And c'mon, Atlanteans. Don't be so prejudiced.)

Mother's Disappearance

In both the pilot and the movie, Arthur's mother has to leave him when he's quite young. In the TV show, the plane Atlanna's piloting goes down in a freak storm over the Bermuda Triangle and a creature drags her down into the depths of the ocean after she entreats AC to get to the surface. In the movie, Atlanna is forced to return home for the safety of her son and Tom Curry, but not before she completely wrecks house (both figuratively and literally) when a contingent of Atlantean soldiers come looking for her.

Victor: Aquaman (2018). Watching Nicole Kidman absolutely slay those soldiers was such a fist-pumping moment.

Looks

You'll have to excuse me for getting superficial here for a moment, but Aquaman is a property that often features fit dudes going around shirtless or wearing suits of armor that leave little to the imagination, muscle-wise. Neither the pilot nor the movie were exceptions to that rule.

Hartley obviously did a lot of training to get in shape for the role of AC, and with his blond hair and lithe physique, his AC definitely wins in the "who looks more like the comic character" contest. And if you asked me in 2006 whose looks I preferred, I probably would have named Hartley. (What can I say? I grew up on the WB's shows.) But—and again, excuse the superficiality—Momoa is, well, Momoa. Those tattoos! Those sun(-in) highlighted locks! Those biceps! That gravelly voice that can be both scary and sensuous! Momoa looks the part of a superhero and carries himself like one too.

Victor: Aquaman (2018). I don't really have to explain this one, do I?

Teacher

In the movie, Arthur grew up training under the tutelage of Vulko, who was a vizier in the Atlantean royal court and an extremely skilled fighter. His training allows Arthur to be able to hold his own against Orm and eventually defeat him. In the pilot, AC got no training whatsoever, but the promise of training to come—from another royal advisor, McCaffery—was expressly stated at the end of the episode and likely was going to be a part of the larger series.

Victor: Aquaman (2006). I love me some Willem Dafoe, but Ving Rhames gave AC Shakespeare's Henry IV, parts 1 and 2, to read as his first task. Hit me right in my Bard-loving heart.

Love Interest

We don't get to learn who the actual love interest of the TV series would have been, but there were two female characters in the pilot who had promise: AC's business partner Eva and Lt. Rachel Torres, who AC saves when her fighter jet goes down while she's patrolling over the Bermuda Triangle. Eva seems nice, and I hope she was going to be a regular in the series (she's hurt at the end of the show, and I'm guessing it could have gone either way), but I was already shipping AC and Lt. Torres after their flirty scene in the hospital. (She also had an intriguing backstory that I would have loved to watch unfold.)

The movie stuck with the source material, introducing Y'Mera Xebella Challa—Mera—into Arthur's life. She's a skilled fighter in her own right and is the voice of reason when Arthur's unsure of what he's supposed to do. She's his equal in more ways than one, and an impressive superhero in her own right.

Victor: Aquaman (2018). Mera might be betrothed to Orm, but she's got a mind—and ideals—all her own. Plus, her water-bending skills are savage!

Villain

Whereas Arthur battled his half-brother and Black Manta, who were out for world domination and vengeance, respectively, AC battled a vicious siren named Nadia who was looking to drag him back to Atlantis to face execution.

Victor: Tie. The movie villains had more time to be fleshed out and their motivations made a lot of sense, but I do love a good monster of the week story. And the practical and special effects to turn Adrienne Palicki into a monster were surprisingly good for the time period!

Weapon

Arthur starts the movie wielding his mother's weapon, a five-pronged trident that can do some major damage. And he ends the movie battling with a three-pronged trident forged for the greatest king Atlantis has ever seen, long thought to be merely a myth, like his namesake’s Excalibur.

AC stabs Nadia in the head with a vaguely trident-shaped harpoon that's not even three feet long and kind of looks like a BBQ fork.

Victor: Aquaman (2018). That little harpoon fork thing AC uses to kill Nadia can't hold a candle to King Atlan's trident.

Ending Song

Because it was a WB show in the early aughts, the pilot ends with an angsty TRUSTcompany song called "Downfall." The movie, on the other hand, ends with a more up-beat number by Skyler Grey called "Everything I Need." Both songs do a good job of speaking to the themes of the story, with lyrics like "You can't see / What I see / The other side of me / Fall back on me / And I'll be the strength I need" ("Downfall") and "Born on the wrong side of the ocean / With all the tides against you / You never thought you'd be much good for anyone / But that's so far from the truth" ("Everything I Need").

Victor: Aquaman (2006). Although "Downfall" is very stereotypically 2006, it seems to be more about AC finding the strength he needs inside himself, while "Everything I Need" is about someone (Mera?) finding what she needs in Arthur. The former feels more applicable to the plot and who Aquaman is.

Winner: Aquaman (2018)

Although the winner here is the movie, it wasn't as much of a rout as Arthur and Orm's final battle, and the pilot and the movie actually have much more in common than I might have expected. Did you miss me? It’s been a little while since I was last here to talk some DCTV! I don't know about you, but I’ve been absolutely loving Swamp Thing. It’s been blowing my mind since it debuted on The CW this year and as we head towards the end of the season, I can’t help but be struck by how many rich, complex women it has introduced to our screens.

Sure, Swamp Thing’s practical effects are astonishing. Yes, Andy Bean and Derek Mears do a brilliant job of bringing the duality of Alec Holland and Swamp Thing to life. But how often do we really see a comic book genre show that features multiple major female characters each of whom have their own complex interior lives that don't revolve completely around men?

From the outset, the writers behind Swamp Thing have centered the story around the show’s women. This is different than in the comics, where Alec Holland is the main protagonist of the story (which, to cut Len Wein, Alan Moore and the other Swamp Thing comic writers some slack, makes sense seeing as he is the titular plant elemental and all). In the Swamp Thing TV series, our entry point to Marais, Louisiana is CDC scientist Abby Arcane (Crystal Reed). It’s a choice that works for the show’s narrative, but it also works as a statement of intent, letting audiences know that this is a series that values its female protagonists just as much as everyone else…perhaps even a little more.

It shouldn't feel radical, but it does, and after the events of the first episode, it becomes clear that Abby won't be trapped in a romantic triangle or play damsel in distress. In fact, if anything, this is a Beauty and the Beast story, one that will see Abby take on the role of hero.

It isn't just Abby, though. In fact, many of Swamp Thing’s characters are women. In the very first episode, we're introduced to Liz Tremayne (Maria Sten), Abby's best friend and Marais' local truth-hunting journalist who is never afraid to shine a light on the murky figures that infect and inhabit the small town. Her perseverance and integrity make her stand out from the shady characters who fill the town that she loves so much. Liz is a beacon of truth and light in the dark glades of Marais. She isn't even afraid of Swamp Thing's biggest bad, Avery Sunderland, and the murderous lengths that he'll go to protect himself and his wealth.

Heroic women are wonderful, and Swamp Thing is filled with them, but executive producers Len Wiseman, Gary Dauberman, Mark Verheiden and James Wan add a lot nuance to the landscape with some flawed or outright villainous female characters who also populate the cast. Jennifer Beals shines as Lucilia Cable, the compromised sheriff of the town, whose love for her son and the nefarious Avery often undermine her moral compass. It feels rare to see women who do wrong that are also complex and empathetic. As the audience, we understand what drives Lucilia, whether it's the need to be loved or to protect her son from harm. She's also a particularly interesting case as despite the crimes and corruption we see her embroiled in, there are still times when see Lucilia do what's right and commit to working alongside the women of Marais rather than conspiring against them.

Virginia Madsen takes on the unenviable—and unexpectedly sizable—role of Maria Sunderland, Avery’s unstable wife. In less thoughtful hands, Maria could easily have become a tropey hysterical caricature, but here she plays as an intelligent woman driven mad by grief. If anything, the tragic death of her daughter has made her more Machiavellian, more malicious, more desperate to do whatever it takes to achieve her ultimate goal. It's a brutal performance that sees Madsen deal with not only her husband, his spiraling debt and the death of their daughter, but also the supernatural.

Finally, I can’t end this without mentioning the powerful and brilliant Madame Xanadu. Jeryl Prescott delivers a killer performance as the all-seeing psychic who has the weight of two worlds on her shoulders. Not only does Xanadu have to protect the living human plane of Marais, but also the spirit world too…and did I mention that she’s also blind? It's no easy task, but Prescott’s Xanadu represents the power of womanhood along with one of the things that makes Swamp Thing so enjoyable overall—a distinct understanding and love for the comics, without a reverence that thwarts any imagination or new ideas.

Now that we've reached its halfway point, we can't wait to see where this wonderful DCTV series leaves the women of Marais. We're sure they'll manage to pleasantly surprise and challenge us every step of the way.

Swamp Thing airs at 8 p.m. (7 p.m. CST) on The CW. and its first led by an LGBTQ+ superhero, Batwoman. Wonder Girl would be the first DCTV series to feature a Latinx character in the starring role.

Wonder Girl features a take on the longtime character that will be new to most Wonder Woman and Wonder Girl fans. Yara Flor is a Latina Dreamer whose parents were an Amazon Warrior and a Brazilian River God. When she discovers that she’s Wonder Girl, she must use her newfound powers to fight the evil forces that would seek to destroy the world.

If greenlit, Wonder Girl would mark the latest entry in The CW’s robust slate of interconnected DCTV shows, which will already be expanding in 2021 with the in-production Superman and Lois. Also returning in 2021 are ongoing “Arrowverse” series The Flash, Batwoman, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning and Supergirl, which announced earlier this year that its upcoming season will be its last.

For fans looking to learn more about Yara before her possible live action debut, they’ll get their first glimpse of the hero in Future State: Wonder Woman, which debuts as a part of DC Future State in January and February, 2021. That miniseries features an older Yara after she’s inherited the Wonder Woman mantle from Diana Prince. The CW series will focus on Yara as she’s younger.

Okay, DC fans, it’s your turn now. With so much happening, we’re looking forward to taking a couple of days to relax, unwind, sip some hot cocoa and maybe check out a couple of DCTV shows. We think that sounds like a pretty great afternoon—especially the hot cocoa, it’s FINALLY cooling down out here in Burbank—but we have some news for you that’ll make it sound even better.

If you’ve been interested in checking out Titans, but haven’t had a chance because you don’t have HBO Max or DC Universe, you can now watch the first episode absolutely free. Robin, Starfire, Raven and Beast Boy—you’ll meet all of them as events unfold that will lead to the formation of one of DC’s most iconic super teams. (And yes, this is the episode that includes Dick Grayson’s infamous Batman line. You know the one.)

After that, it’s time to get crazy with everyone’s favorite red-and-black bad girl. The first episode of Harley Quinn’s critically acclaimed adult animated series is also available to stream for free, and it’s not to be missed. It’s violent, crass…and absolutely hilarious. It’s also just what the doctor ordered for this moment in time. After all, who couldn’t use a laugh right now?

Both shows are available through HBO Max, but you don’t need to be a subscriber to watch them. However, for DCTV fans, there has been a spot of brightness amongst all the real-world darkness this year, and her name is Courtney Whitmore…aka Stargirl. In the first season of her summer DCTV series, which aired on both DC Universe and The CW, viewers were treated to a story of kindness, friendship, hope and above all things, love.

Stargirl herself is based off of creator Geoff Johns’ real life sister, who tragically passed away in an airplane accident at a young age. Perhaps one of the most touching aspects of this series is the love and passion on display for the character. Johns’ love for his sister—and by extension, the character based on her—can be directly felt as a viewer and it makes the series all the more special.

Stargirl leans heavily into its themes, really separating it from all of the other superhero shows out there. It’s a kind, hopeful and warm-hearted series, themes that are all personified through Courtney. Kindness is a rare thing these days, particularly in the sort of high school setting in which Stargirl’s story takes place. However, Courtney never falters in her genuine kindness and acceptance of all around her as she strives to see the good in everyone. Even when it comes to some of the villains of the series, such as her blade-wielding nemesis Cindy Burman, or the tragic Henry King Jr. (Brainwave Jr.), Courtney still tries to use her open-mindedness, benevolence and humanity to reach out to them and entice them to embrace a more tender side of themselves.

As Courtney tries to rebuild the long dormant Justice Society of America to combat the collective of super-villains operating out of her new town, she doesn’t hesitate at all when recruiting her school’s so-called outcasts to be a part of her new superhero group. She befriends two of the school’s most picked on girls—Yolanda, who has been shamed and cyberbullied by the popular kids, and Beth, who never had any friends to call her own besides her parents. Courtney trusts these young women with some of her most precious secrets, giving each of them a new super-suit that grants them certain abilities. Things don’t always go smoothly, but by the end of the series, they’ve all formed unbreakable bonds of friendship and loyalty, something none of them would have gained if it weren’t for Courtney’s kindness from the start. To see a high school student treat people with such respect and dignity is truly a refreshing thing to watch on television, as it is extremely rare in such an age group.

Let’s talk about those bonds for a moment. They’re built entirely on absolute trust, which is necessary considering their goal involves stopping some truly evil and powerful people from causing damage to the country. Ultimately, Courtney’s newly formed friendships are responsible for saving all of us. That’s a powerful message for right now—we’re saved by not what divides us, but what unites us. It’s also something that’s carried over to the show’s other crucial relationship—that between Courtney and her stepfather, Pat.

The bond of friendship, love and trust that’s formed between Courtney and Pat is probably one of the most special parts of Stargirl’s first season. At first their relationship is rocky and awkward, just like any new stepdaughter and stepfather relationship, but as Courtney comes into her power and her new mantle as Stargirl, Pat becomes her most trusted—and most unexpected—ally. Not only does he keep her safe and keep her secret, he ultimately learns to trust her and to motivate her to be who she is destined to be, despite being understandably worried for her well-being and wary about encouraging her to become a superhero.

Perhaps the most touching moments between the two of them are during the last two episodes, where the strength of their bond and connection is really revealed. Courtney sees Pat as not only one of her closest allies and confidents, but also as a father figure. When this becomes clear—when Courtney refers to herself as his “daughter” in order to bring him out of a trance in the season’s final episode—it’s a powerful moment. One doesn’t see a lot of relationships between stepparents and stepchildren in TV or film, so seeing Stargirl portray this one so positively, yet believably, is certainly worth celebrating.

Stargirl’s first season is fantastic and completely unlike any other superhero show out there right now. Whether you are familiar with the character or not, the show—in no small part due to series star Brec Bassinger—gets you to care about Stargirl and her scrappy team by building bonds between them that are both recognizable and real. With so many superhero TV shows and movies available right now, the trend is to make the heroes tortured or jaded as a way of setting them apart. Stargirl takes the opposite approach. Courtney is kind, loving, hopeful and truly good to the core. She’s the sort of person we should all strive to be. The world needs more Courtney Whitmores. We’d all be much better for it if we did.

Stargirl can be streamed on both DC Universe and The CW website and app. Look for it to debut on HBO Max later this year.

Amanda Levine covers collectibles, cosplay and pop culture for DC24ֱ.com and is a regular contributor to Ink Spots, our corner of the site devoted to Young Adult comics and graphic novels.

Tags:

dc binge, Stargirl, stargirl binge, dc's stargirl, binge stargirl, stargirl tv series, stargirl tv shows, courtney whitmore, brec bassinger, pat dugan, luke evans, justice society, justice society of america, jsa, injustice society, stargirl's optimism, stargirl's hopefullness, dctv, #dctv, dc universe, the cw, amanda levine

Reader CTA:

Read Now

Article Header Layout:

Standard Layout

Mon, 02 Nov 2020 21:00:00 +0000 Amanda Levine 466431 at /blog/2020/11/02/stargirl-reminds-us-that-when-saving-the-world-kindness-is-key#comments Shadows and Stars: Stargirl Casts Eclipso and the Shade for Season 2 /blog/2020/10/26/shadows-and-stars-stargirl-casts-eclipso-and-the-shade-for-season-2

<?php echo $entity->type; However, lately he seems he’s returned to his evil roots, both in comics and on TV.

Stargirl describes their Shade as a classic antihero from DC 24ֱ who wields magical shadow powers. The Shade is an English immortal, described as tall and slim with an elegant 19th Century way to his speech and manners. He masks the horrors he’s experienced and people he’s lost in all the time alive with wry, witty retorts and a false sense that nothing really matters.

It’s fitting that the Shade would make his way to Stargirl as he’s long been affiliated with the Injustice Society and with Courtney’s predecessor, Starman. However, he was originally introduced as a Flash villain back in 1942’s Flash 24ֱ #33 and indeed made an appearance on The CW’s The Flash during the show’s third season. This original Shade was little more than a flamboyant, super-powered thief, but after 1994’s Zero Hour event, the Shade was reenvisioned as a Victorian Era English gentleman who endured a mysterious tragedy that killed over 100 people while wiping his own memory clean. Eventually he’d go on to discover that he was immortal, and like the previous version of the Shade, possessed the ability to control shadows.

And yet, we suspect it’s the second newly cast villain who will prove to be the real challenge for Stargirl and her team. Actor Nick Tarabay will be playing the role of Eclipso in season 2, meaning that if Courtney thought people were acting strange around Blue Valley last season, things are about to get a whole lot worse.

Stargirl’s Eclipso is described as physically imposing and frightening. Eclipso is an ancient entity of corruption and vengeance. Brimming with a cold, terrifying darkness, he exploits the flaws of others, reveling in the impure and sinful, sadistically feeding off the dark side of humanity.

Both villains were teased in Stargirl’s season 1 finale, and Eclipso’s nod included his infamous black diamond—the Heart of Darkness—suggesting that it will play a role in the series as well. In post-Crisis comics, Eclipso was imprisoned in the Heart of Darkness, which was eventually shattered, allowing the powerful entity to possess anyone who had one of the shards and who held hatred in their heart (and really, who isn’t feeling anger and resentment right now?). Even worse, the possession could be spread by simply looking at the face of someone who was already possessed, meaning that once Eclipso has taken control of one person, it’s only a quick matter of time before he has control of everyone around them. Cities, states, countries…if no one puts a stop to him, there are no limits to the number of people he can possess.

Tarabay’s role is described as a series regular, while Cake is recurring, meaning we’ll be seeing them both plenty when Stargirl’s second season debuts. Interestingly, both actors have appeared in small roles within The CW’s Arrowverse. Tarabay—who’s probably best known for his recent role on The Expanse—made several appearances as Captain Boomerang on Arrow, while Cake made a pair of appearances as Blackbeard in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow’s third season. However, their Stargirl roles will easily be their most prominent DC roles so far.

Of course, while the appearance of these two villains is great news for us fans, it’s bound to be pretty frightening for Courtney! What do you think? Is she up for the challenge? Do you think the Shade will stay a villain? And how much damage will be wrought by Eclipso? He’s battled the entire Justice League…will the newly reformed Justice Society stand any chance at all?

Stargirl's debut season can now be streamed her own.

Javicia Leslie is stepping into the cowl for Batwoman’s second season, introducing us to a new version of the hero named Ryan Wilder, a former drug dealer who’s now trying to do right by the people of Gotham. While we still don’t know much about Wilder—she’s an all-new character (although she’ll be making her comic book debut this week in the pages of Batgirl #50)—it’s clear that she has a different way of doing things than original Batwoman Kate Kane. She’s more untamed and less disciplined, and seems to possess a level of raw passion that we rarely saw in Kane.

In other words, she has a different approach to being Batwoman, so she deserves a different suit.

While it seems that Wilder will start the season off wearing Kane’s existing batsuit, she’ll eventually be making some changes to it, adapting the crimson-wigged costume to something more her style. And today, Warner Bros. Television and The CW gave us our first look at it with not one, but two powerful pics.

Color us very impressed! Probably the greatest compliment you can give a new superhero suit is that it feels fresh but is still instantly recognizable as that hero, and that’s absolutely what the Batwoman team has done here. You can tell that’s Batwoman, but the redesigned belt, scarlet red gauntlets and distinct new wig make it clear that there have a been a few important changes when it comes to the Gotham City hero.

The new suit was conceptualized by Batwoman costume designer Maya Mani and created by Ocean Drive Leather, the wig created by Janice Workman and makeup styled by Cory Roberts. Look for it to make its first appearance in episode 3 of Batwoman's second season.

"Ryan’s journey starts from a place of ‘What can this Batsuit do for me?’" shares Batwoman Executive Producer Caroline Dries. "But it’s not long before she realizes the power of its symbol and what it can do for everyone else in Gotham City. As Ryan embraces everything that makes her special, she adjusts the suit to fit her physically and figuratively. This meant creating a new body design and new cowl that was undeniably a statement that screamed ‘powerful.’ Maya Mani sent me her drawings and I loved it. The wig was something we never perfected in season one, and Janice Workman crushed it with this new take. Javicia and I saw various prototypes of styles and red ombres, and at one point we were trading our own iPad-doodled versions. Janice translated that into what we are looking at now. When I see it, I smile. It makes me feel inspired."

Adds Leslie,"I love the fact that Ryan is becoming her own Batwoman—it’s her style, her swag, and her moment! It was an honor to be able to collaborate with Caroline and Maya. I felt it was important that viewers could tell by the silhouette that Batwoman was a Black girl. With the form-fitting suit and beautiful Afro, we definitely nailed it!"

Batwoman’s second season won’t be coming to The CW until sometime in 2021, but it’s currently shooting up in Vancouver giving us hope that it won’t be too long before we’ll get our first glimpse of Leslie and her new suit in action. Until then, let us know what you think of these photos! Gotham City baddies aren’t going to know what hit them. And man, is that proving prescient for Titans.

It’s been revealed that in their third season, our show’s heroes will be making their way to Gotham where they’ll be facing one of their own—Jason Todd. Angry over the Titans’ actions (or perhaps, lack of actions) at the end of season two, Jason will return for revenge as none other than Red Hood. And we just got our first look at his new duds.

The Titans don’t know what they’re in for…but we do! While Red Hood’s backstory has obviously been changed from the one we’re most familiar with, we have little doubt that the gun-toting former Robin will be every bit as angry and hot for vengeance as he usually is. Played by Curran Walters—who has said many times how excited he was at the prospect of Jason becoming Red Hood—we anticipate plenty of showdowns between Red Hood and his fellow former Robin Nightwing.

This image couldn’t have arrived at a better time, as the character of Jason Todd is having something of a moment right now. Earlier this month, his dark origin was adapted into an innovative animated movie that gave viewers the chance to alter his fate. Red Hood has also proven to be an integral part of Geoff Johns and Jason Fabok’s acclaimed DC Black Label comic, Batman: Three Jokers, and will be one of four playable characters in Warner Bros. Games Montreal’s upcoming Gotham Knights game. However, his appearance on Titans is likely the one that has fans most excited—it’ll be his live-action debut.

Along with releasing the first look image, Warner Bros. Television also announced that Titans’ first two seasons will be making their way to HBO Max on November 1st, so if you’re a subscriber and you haven’t yet seen them, you’ll have plenty of time to catch up on what’s arguably DC’s most action-packed TV series.

But for now, let us know what you think of the suit! Are you as excited as Walters for Red Hood to make his debut? What do you think will be the Titans’ reaction? And the one we’ve always wondered…how the heck does he breathe in that thing?!?

Titans' first two seasons are currently available for streaming on DC Universe and HBO Max (starting on November 1st).

Tags:

red hood, titans, first look at red hood, red hood first look, first look at red hood on titans, red hood on titans, jason todd, Robin, curran walters, curran walters as red hood, red hood suit, titans first look, titans season 3, titans season three, dctv, #dctv, Gotham, gotham city, hbo max, titans on hbo max, dc universe

Reader CTA:

Read Now

Article Header Layout:

Standard Layout

Sat, 24 Oct 2020 01:25:05 +0000 Tim Beedle 466262 at /blog/2020/10/23/first-look-titans-curran-walters-dons-the-red-hood#comments
