According to the show’s logline, Green Lantern will include longtime ring-slingers like Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, Sinestro, Killowog and Alan Scott. That last Lantern is noteworthy because as fans know, Scott’s backstory isn’t the same as the other Green Lanterns and he’s not known as a space-based superhero. However, the logline does confirm that like in recent comics, Scott will be a gay character:

From DC and HBO Max and Berlanti Productions comes a bold adaptation of the iconic comic book franchise: A saga spanning decades and galaxies. GREEN LANTERN will depict the adventures of a multitude of Lanterns, including Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz and Alan Scott—Earth's first Green Lantern, who, true to the comics, is a gay man—and many more. The series will also include fan favorites such as Sinestro and Killowog, as well as introduce new heroes to the ranks of the Green Lantern Corps.

Green Lantern comes from executive producers and writers Seth Grahame-Smith, who will serve as showrunner, and Marc Guggenheim, along with executive producers Greg Berlanti, Geoff Johns, Sarah Schechter and David Madden. Many of these names should be familiar to DCTV fans, as Berlanti has overseen most of DC’s recent small screen offerings, including The CW’s beloved “Arrowverse,” as well as recent streaming hits Titans, Stargirl and Doom Patrol. Guggenheim and Schechter have both played key roles in many of those shows, including Arrow, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl and Batwoman, among others. Guggenheim also co-wrote the 2011 Ryan Reynold’s Green Lantern movie along with Berlanti, Michael Green and Michael Goldenberg.

Grahame-Smith may not be as familiar of a name to DC fans, but Green Lantern isn’t the first DC project in which he’s been involved. Grahame-Smith co-wrote the screenplay to 2017’s The Lego Batman Movie, along with 2012’s Dark Shadows, directed by Tim Burton. Prior to that, he gained some notoriety in geek circles with his novels Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Unholy Night.

Green Lantern is the latest high profile DCTV series to be developed for HBO Max, coming on the heels of the recent announcements of Peacemaker, a James Gunn-written spinoff set in the universe of his 2021 movie The Suicide Squad, as well as an untitled Gotham City Police Department series from Matt Reeves and Boardwalk Empire’s Terrence Winter set in the universe of Reeve’s upcoming The Batman. All three shows will live on HBO Max alongside prior DC Universe shows like Doom Patrol, Harley Quinn and Titans, and previously aired network shows like Batwoman.

Okay, DC fans, now it’s your turn to go Green. What do you think about this announcement? Are you ready to see characters like Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz and Alan Scott brought to live-action life for the first time? And do you think we’ll be seeing Sinestro as a member of the Green Lantern Corps or leading the Yellow Lanterns? Share your thoughts and speculation on social media, and keep an eye here on DC24ֱ.com for more on HBO Max’s Green Lantern as it develops!

Tags:

Green Lantern, green lantern tv series, green lantern tv show, hbo max, hbo max green lantern, green lantern hbo max series, green lanterns, green lantern corps, alan scott, guy gardner, jessica cruz, Simon Baz, sinestro, killowog, greg berlanti, greg berlanti green lantern, seth grahame-smith, seth grahame-smith green lantern, dctv, #dctv, dctv news, #dctv news, Breaking 24ֱ, announcements, dctv on hbo max

Reader CTA:

Read Now

Article Header Layout:

Standard Layout

Fri, 09 Oct 2020 19:32:55 +0000 Tim Beedle 466146 at /blog/2020/10/09/green-lantern-tv-series-will-feature-alan-scott-jessica-cruz-and-more#comments Breaking 24ֱ: Aldis Hodge Set to Soar as Black Adam's Hawkman /blog/2020/09/25/breaking-news-aldis-hodge-set-to-soar-as-black-adams-hawkman

<?php echo $entity->type; Hawkman is the second member of Black Adam’s Justice Society of America to be cast, following on the heels of Noah Centineo who landed the role of Atom Smasher earlier this year. The JSA is, of course, the predecessor group to the well-known Justice League and historically features DC’s Golden Age-era heroes.

While details about Black Adam’s Hawkman remain unknown, the character is best identified by his distinct wings, hawk-like helmet and signature battle mace. Debuting in 1940’s Flash 24ֱ #1, Hawkman was originally an Ancient Egyptian prince who was cursed and found himself reincarnating over millennia and on various worlds—notably the alien world of Thanagar, where he served as a police officer. Today, Hawkman is embodied by archaeologist Carter Hall, who harnesses the mysterious anti-gravity Nth Metal, which he controls mentally and which allows him to fly.

Black Adam made a memorable appearance recently at DC FanDome: Hall of Heroes, where star Dwayne Johnson teased the movie with an eye-catching motion comic and revealed at least some of the members of Black Adam's JSA (along with Hawkman and Atom Smasher it also includes the still-to-be-cast Doctor Fate and Cyclone). Set within the DC movie universe, Black Adam has been anticipated by DC fans since 2019’s Shazam!, which first teased the iconic antihero. The movie’s directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who recently directed Jungle Cruise and which also stars Johnson. Beau Flynn, Dany Garcia and Johnson are all producing, while Scott Sheldon will serve as executive producer.

Hodge recently starred in the acclaimed Regina King movie One Night in Miami, as well as the hit Invisible Man remake. Previously, he was seen in 2017’s Hidden Figures, 2016’s Straight Outta Compton and in TV series like City on a Hill, Turn, Black Mirror, Underground and Leverage. While Hodge is no stranger to action and to genre fare, Hawkman will be his first role as a big screen superhero.

Black Adam is due in theaters on December 22, 2021.

UPDATE: Johnson took to Instagram to welcome Hodge to the role as only he can. Check it out here!

Tags:

hawkman, hawkman casting, black adam hawkman, black adam, black adam movie, black adam casting, hawkman in black adam, aldis hodge, aldis hodge hawkman, aldis hodge cast as hawkman, aldis hodge joins black adam, aldis hodge black adam, Dwayne Johnson, dwayne johnson black adam, The Rock, dc films, dc movies, dceu, casting news, Breaking 24ֱ, announcements, new line

Reader CTA:

Read Now

Article Header Layout:

Standard Layout

Fri, 25 Sep 2020 21:31:35 +0000 Tim Beedle 465972 at /blog/2020/09/25/breaking-news-aldis-hodge-set-to-soar-as-black-adams-hawkman#comments The Legion of Superheroes Animated Series is Coming to Blu-ray /blog/2020/06/17/the-legion-of-superheroes-animated-series-is-coming-to-blu-ray

<?php echo $entity->type; While Legion of Superheroes’ first season was released as a series of DVDs, the show’s second—and arguably even stronger—season never received a DVD release. Fortunately, all of that’s changing this summer. Warner Archive Collection announced today that they will be releasing Legion of Superheroes: The Complete Series on Blu-ray starting July 14, 2020. All 26 episodes of the show will be included, presenting in 16x9 widescreen across three discs. The set will also include an original featurette, “We Are Legion,” along with an exclusive audio commentary for the series’ two-part finale, “Dark Victory, Parts One and Two,” with producer James Tucker, director Brandon Vietti and Kari Wahlgren, who voiced Saturn Girl.

In addition, for those who may already own the first season on DVD, Warner Archive Collection will also be releasing Legion of Superheroes: The Complete Second Season on DVD for the very first time.

For those who have never before seen the series, it’s well worth a look. In Legion of Superheroes, which is set one thousand years from now, Superman inspires a group of emerging young heroes from the 31st Century to band together and defend the newly formed United Planets. In Season One, Legionnaires Bouncing Boy (Michael Cornacchia), Brainiac 5 (Adam Wylie), Saturn Girl (Wahlgren) and Lightning Lad (Andy Milder) travel back in time to convince an awkward teen named Clark Kent (Yuri Lowenthal) to join their Legion of Superheroes and battle their archnemeses, the Fatal Five. The insecure teen is, in turn, inspired by his new friends and, with their help, begins his journey to become the galaxy’s greatest hero. Catching up two years later, Season Two presents Superman and the Legion with an even greater challenge: Kell-El, the Superman of the 41st Century.

Along with its core team of Legionnaires and a time-displaced Man of Steel, the series featured many additional popular Legion characters like Cosmic Boy (voiced by Wil Wheaton), Triplicate Girl and Chameleon Boy, plus villains like Alexis Luthor, Imperiex, the Legion of Super-Villains and Brainiac. In the years after Legion of Superheroes’ cancellation, many of the creative minds behind the show would go on to even greater success within the world of DC animation, making this earlier series something of a time capsule. For years, the Joker has terrorized Gotham, facing off with Batman time and time again. But now he’s found a new adversary, one that can deliver him from the purgatory of Arkham Asylum and set his madness free once more—the very doctor tasked with treating him. As he gets his hooks deeper and deeper into the mind of his prey, Joker sets off a chain reaction of mayhem that will threaten to tear down not only Gotham City but the soul of this idealistic man, and his young family, too.

"Getting to work with my long-time collaborator Andrea Sorrentino on a Joker story is very exciting,” shares Lemire. “The Joker is an iconic character and we wanted to create something that challenges readers to look at him in a new and horrifying way."

Sorrentino adds, “This story has pushed me as a creator to aspire to new heights in storytelling. That little spark of madness in the Joker gives me an opportunity to play with the pacing, the layouts and the storytelling in a way that few other characters would allow.”

JOKER: KILLER SMILE is a three-part story that will debut October 30, 2019, releasing every other month following.

In THE QUESTION: THE DEATHS OF VIC SAGE, Lemire, Cowan and Sienkiewicz launch a philosophical mystery starring Vic Sage—the Question. Building on the legacy of Dennis O’Neil and Cowan’s previous run, it begins in an early Hub City where an unsolved mystery has led to the demise of the Question—and history will soon repeat itself. Beginning in the Old West and continuing through the lawless 1930s, the answers needed to solve the problem are out of reach—and may doom the Question once again.

The faceless man who believes in absolutes will soon find himself in a world where it all blends together, and escaping this trap is the only way to set himself free.

Lemire adds, “Denys Cowan’s run on The Question has been a touchstone for me as a creator and a fan of comics for a long time. Getting the chance to team with Denys and Bill Sienkiewicz to return to Hub City and Vic Sage is a dream come true.”

“Jeff is an excellent writer and this might be one of his best stories so far,” shares Cowan. “The series will go through multiple time periods and explore aspects of Vic Sage’s past and present that have never been explored before. Combined with Bill Sienkiewicz’s inks and Chris Sotomayor’s deft color touch, this may be the best version of the Question yet.”

Sienkiewicz adds, “Working with Denys is always a rewarding experience, so revisiting the Question with him after all this time—and in a special format—is the textbook definition of a no-brainer. It doesn’t hurt that I’m also a huge fan of Jeff’s writing and Soto’s fantastic colors. What a team to be a part of.”

THE QUESTION: THE DEATHS OF VIC SAGE is a four-part story that will debut November 20, 2019, releasing every other month following.

Both series will be released under DC Black Label. Today DC announces a new addition to this universe starring the infamous John Constantine. It all begins October 30 with a special one-shot issue, THE SANDMAN UNIVERSE PRESENTS HELLBLAZER #1 from writer Simon Spurrier and artist Marcio Takara, followed by the ongoing series JOHN CONSTANTINE, HELLBLAZER from Spurrier and artist Aaron Campbell this November.

“Year One was just the start. Now you get to inhabit the worlds, books, and houses we built for you,” says Gaiman. “I was thrilled when I was told that John Constantine—the original, demon-haunted one who first showed up in SWAMP THING’s “American Gothic” story—is coming back to his murky and dangerous roots. More magic and more darkness and not a few gods and dreams are here for you to explore.”

In THE SANDMAN UNIVERSE PRESENTS HELLBLAZER #1, the story begins in a moment originally seen in Gaiman’s miniseries THE BOOKS OF MAGIC. John Constantine finds himself haggard, bloody, and dying in an epic magical war—a battle that will soon consume the world. As he lies there, the vision of a young Tim Hunter stands above him, the naive youth seeing firsthand what his destiny holds. Horrified, Hunter flees back into the past, and Constantine is left behind to die.

Now, years later, Constantine reemerges, physically un-aged but with all of his memories intact—and yet the world has passed him by. Constantine must now fathom a new world torn apart by the same old political and social woes, while attempting to discover how he returned after all this time. But most troubling of all are the rumors of a new young magician named Tim Hunter, a boy destined to be either the greatest sorcerer of all, or the greatest threat to the world. If history is repeating itself, then is it John’s role to die all over again? Or is John here to stop the cycle—and stop Tim Hunter?

“HELLBLAZER’s the one title I’ve always aspired to write. Ever since John Constantine slunk from Alan Moore’s brain into SWAMP THING, dropping secrets like grenades, bewildering vegetables, and spinning mysteries, I’ve been drawn to his misadventures with eerie gravity,” says Spurrier. “John Constantine is the cynic’s magician: a man of selfish drives and cataclysmic self-knowledge, who tries to do the right thing in spite of himself, in spite of the cost, in spite of the vile and violent world he occupies. He may not be the hero we need, but he’s definitely the bastard we deserve.

“In this new era, everything is different. Everyone and everything he loved and knew is dead or despises him. Alone, angry, older, and wiser, he beholds a world that is clearlygoing insane. The shadows are deeper than ever. So he does what he does. He breathes smoke. He grins to himself. And he goes to work.”

Following the special issue, Spurrier and Campbell will continue Constantine’s story in the pages of JOHN CONSTANTINE, HELLBLAZER, available November 27. November will also kick off new arcs in THE DREAMING, BOOKS OF MAGIC, LUCIFER, and HOUSE OF WHISPERS.

In THE DREAMING from Spurrier and Bilquis Evely, the sentient algorithm known as Wan has taken full control of the kingdom of Dream—but who created him? And did they put him on Dream’s throne for a purpose? Abel thinks he may be on the verge of uncovering that secret and hopes to tell Matthew the Raven what he knows, but Wan has a dangerous side…and while the mysterious Dora might be able to help them fight back, she’s quite busy in the waking world learning the truth about her own past—a truth that might unmake her entirely.

In HOUSE OF WHISPERS from Nalo Hopkinson, Dan Watters and Dominike “Domo” Stanton, Erzulie is grieving the loss of one of her husbands, while her remaining spouses ask themselves if they can remain by her side. But in the darkness, a rival has arrived to vie for Erzulie’s place as the newest master of a House in the Dreaming; the Corinthian has his eyes on a forgotten piece of real estate in the Dreaming, and he's not above moving into a fixer-upper, if taking control of it can give him power like Erzulie's. To fend off this threat, Erzulie will need allies – including the mysterious Papa Midnite, and the dangerous Shakpana, the contagious god whose last outbreak nearly destroyed the world. And with friends like those…

In LUCIFER from Watters, Max Fiumara, and Sebastian Fiumara, Lucifer is reeling from his standoff against God and the forces of Heaven, and he finds himself wandering the English countryside neglecting his cosmic responsibilities and attempting to build a new life—and home—for himself. Of course, any house built by Lucifer is bound to be a little piece of Hell on Earth…as his first dinner guests, John Constantine included, will learn. But elsewhere, ancient and powerful forces are conspiring against Lucifer. There is a wailing and gnashing of teeth upon the Earth. There is rage and violence in the hearts of men and beasts alike. For every thousand years the Wild Hunt must ride, and tear out the heart of a god…and this time, the black bone horn blows for Lucifer.

And in BOOKS OF MAGIC from Kat Howard and Tom Fowler, Tim Hunter has just made the most fateful (and possibly catastrophic) decision of his young life, but as a result, he’s feeling quite confident about the kind of magician he’s going to become…until John Constantine comes knocking on his door, determined to kill the young man who’s clearly starting down a road that leads to the planet’s destruction. There’s no guarantee Tim’s worst self will ever take over…but can Constantine afford to take that chance? And now that Tim’s secret is starting to get out at school, can he ever expect to return to a normal life again?

The first collected editions of THE DREAMING, HOUSE OF WHISPERS, LUCIFER, and BOOKS OF MAGIC are available in comics shops and bookstores everywhere this month. But if you missed them as they broke on Facebook and Twitter, we’ve rounded them up for you here.

Crossovers

Ever since The Flash debuted set within the same universe of The CW’s prior hit Arrow, crossovers have been a #DCTV staple on The CW. This fall will feature The CW’s first ever four-episode crossover, spanning not only Arrow and Flash, but Supergirl and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow as well. However, today the Executive Producers announced that next season will also feature a two-part musical crossover taking place later in the season between Supergirl and The Flash.

If you’re scratching your head over this, you shouldn’t be. Both Melissa Benoist and Grant Gustin were regulars on Fox’s Glee and are more than capable of carrying a tune, along with fellow stars Jesse L. Martin (Joe West), John Barrowman (Malcolm Merlyn), Victor Garber (Martin Stein) and Jeremy Jordan (Winn Schott). As for how the rest of the cast is at crooning, we’ll find out when the musical crossover takes place in the second half of the season.

Freedom Fighters: The Ray

The CW also announced their second DC animated series for their digital channel, CW Seed. Freedom Fighters: The Ray is inspired by Grant Morrison’s update of the classic character in THE MULTIVERSITY and will feature the first gay super hero to headline a show.

Following on the success of last year’s Vixen (which will soon be returning for a second season), Freedom Fighters: The Ray will tell the story of Raymond “Ray” Terrill, a reporter who gains light-based powers after he uncovers a plot by the government to turn light into a weapon of mass destruction. Ray’s new abilities inspire him to go beyond just reporting against injustice, but to start taking action against it.

Look for Freedom Fighters: The Ray to debut on CW Seed in 2017.

Supergirl

Along with the news about the musical crossover, there were some exciting character and casting announcements made today about the newest #DCTV show to join the CW family.

Fans of Young Justice and Teen Titans may be excited to learn that Miss Martian will be showing up on Supergirl next season, played by Grimm’s Sharon Leal. Considering we’ve only met one other White Martian on Supergirl so far and he was downright terrifying, it’ll be interesting to see what sort of relationship Leal’s character will have with Martian Manhunter.

Also appearing this season on Supergirl will be Mon-El (above), played by actor Chris Wood (Containment). Mon-El will first show up in Supergirl’s season premiere and traditionally has powers very similar to Supergirl and Superman’s, despite hailing from a different planet. Wood’s been cast as a series regular, so we know Mon-El will be a significant presence when Supergirl returns in the fall. Whether the show will make any nods to the Legion of Super-Heroes, however, remains to be seen.

Finally, the producers also announced that Kevin Smith will be directing an episode of Supergirl in Season 2. Smith, of course, also directed a well-regarded episode of The Flash last season (and will be back to direct another episode in Flash Season 3).

The Flash

Over the past two seasons, we’ve seen many of the Flash’s classic baddies, from Captain Cold to Zoom to Gorilla Grodd. We’ve even seen an early version of the Rogues. But there’s been one key villain missing…until now. Earlier this week, Warner Bros. Television announced that actor Grey Damon has been cast in the role of Mirror Master, and will be appearing in the show’s fourth episode.

Damon will be playing the Sam Scudder version of the character (above), a criminal who discovers he has the power to travel through any reflective surface. Of course, being the sort of person he is, he uses that ability to embark on a major crime spree to prove he’s the greatest thief in Central City.

Speaking of villains, it’s been revealed that the Flash will be battling two big ones next season. The first, Doctor Alchemy, was revealed in The Flash’s third season trailer that debuted last month at Comic-Con. While we don’t yet know which version of the character we’ll be seeing on the show, we do know that he’ll be voiced by Saw’s Tobin Bell.

The second villain is a speedster, and we now know which one it is—Savitar. While not as well known as the Reverse-Flash or Zoom, Savitar is every bit as distinct and dangerous. In the comics, Savitar (who’s real name is unknown) was a former test pilot who was infused with the Speed Force when flying an experimental plane. He took his name after the Hindu god of motion and eventually gained a devoted cult of followers.

UPDATE: Gorilla Grodd fans rejoice! Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg also confirmed that the intelligent, psychic ape will be returning…and bringing a few friends. Look for a two-part episode set in Gorilla City this season as well.

Arrow

The CW’s longest running #DCTV show had some cool things to announce as well, including the news that actor Dolph Lundgren (The Expendables, Rocky IV) would be appearing as a villain in the show’s Russian flashbacks.
