I'm a little bit of an idealist, as is Superman—though he's a bit more pure. Superman is all about saying that good can win, always earnestly trying to do the right thing, and that goodness can be the order of the day. He really IS truth, justice and the American way.

The acting trick to playing Superman is to read what he’s supposed to say, and then I say it as truthfully and straightforward as I possibly can. It's always more fun to play villains because there's a lot more latitude, but it's way more difficult to play the good guy—especially someone as squeaky clean and All-American as Superman. You really have to commit to his ideals, his mission. It's surprisingly difficult to do.

The great part of voicing Superman is that you really can’t be Superman without also being Clark Kent. And I love Clark, especially when he’s being coy or funny or self-deprecating. We’ve gone down this road in culture today where so many of our heroes are portrayed through a dark, dystopic view of the world. Batman is more realistic in terms of the human psyche because he's a little more tortured—he's darker, more cynical and more street savvy. But Superman represents light and goodness; he has an ethical core that is rock solid. And God knows we need that now. If I were Superman, I’d make a lot of changes today.

Voice acting is an anonymous job. It’s the character that matters most. But there are those fans to whom the actor means something—and, in particular, that the actor takes the responsibility of the role seriously. The fans helped to instill in me a profound sense of that stewardship of the character. Superman is more than a Super Hero—he’s a symbol of the good in all of us.

When I get to reprise the role, I realize how much I’ve missed him. Plus, Superman scripts offer a genuine, organic opportunity to give a little reflection of the world, and some subtle social commentary that can be very bold in its approach to our country and our world.

That was part of the inspiration for our Creative Coalition contribution to DC FanDome. Years ago, I did a staged a radio play of It Happened One Night for the Sundance Theater Lab, and it was really fun. In the current world situation, it dawned on me that, if you can’t do it live, Zoom is the perfect vehicle for that sort of performance. So I called my old friend, Warner Bros. TV honcho Peter Roth, and asked if we could have some of the old Superman radio plays to recreate the same sort of event for DC FanDome. The deck was slightly stacked in my favor—Peter is a really good man who likes to support worthwhile activities, and he’s a huge Superman fan. Peter got behind it and, voila, we have a terrific, playful 1940s-style radio play with fun, shameless overacting by an outstanding lineup of actors and a terrific foley artist filling in the gaps.

One of the real plusses for a radio play, much like animation, is that there are no boundaries for casting. And this is a complete bouillabaisse—Alfre Woodard plays Perry White, Daniel Dae Kim and Wilson Cruz share the Superman role with me—and everyone is wonderful. You can’t go wrong with actors like Henry Winkler, CCH Pounder, Giancarlo Esposito, Tony Shalhoub, Constance Zimmer, young stars like Sean Giambrone, and so many more. Plus, the two Anthonys—Anthony Rapp and Anthony Carrigan—steal the show at times with their hilarious portrayals of these two thugs. There’s a lot of flavor in this cast.

It also gives us a chance to shine a light on The Creative Coalition. One of the cornerstones of America is that we are creative thinkers. We're innovators. And in order to continue to be innovators, we need to train the creative minds of our children. The Creative Coalition is a non-profit, non-partisan arts advocacy group. It's made up of people who have attained a high level of visibility in the entertainment world, and we have two essential missions.

Our core mission is to promote federal funding for arts and public education and freedom of speech. The other is that we use, in a responsible way, our notoriety to focus attention on issues of public importance that affect everyone, issues that otherwise might have a little more difficulty getting the attention they deserve. I personally became involved because I believe that it is vital to the survival of our culture to have arts be part of the public school curriculum. I could spew tons of boring data—but the bottom line is that when you're teaching a child, you have to teach the entire child. Kids that study the arts are better mathematicians and scientists and politicians…and actors. They're not just better artists.

There are those who think the arts are a luxury, that they’re unnecessary—but look around and you’ll clearly see their importance in the world today. Arts and entertainment keep us alive, makes us laugh, give us unique and varied perspectives, and provide a lot of hope. We need to tell each other stories, to give ourselves a direct reflection of our culture, of today’s world, and who we are. It is a basic human need. That’s where The Creative Coalition rises.

I hope you’ll check out the Superman Radio Show at DC FanDome this Saturday. Kryptonians and Bats are a match made in super hero heaven. But what you may not have known is, unlike their predecessors, Kara Zor-El and Barbara Gordon haven’t actually had many opportunities to get to work with one another on the page.

...At least, maybe not in the ways you might expect.

It’s time to break down the strange, unexpected and altogether animated history of the other World’s Finest duo.

Art by Inaki Miranda and Eva De La Cruz from Batgirl Annual #1

The Early Years

Supergirl and Batgirl began teaming up officially all the way back in the mid-1970s, during the heart of the Silver Age of comics and nearly a decade before the massive continuity-altering event, CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS. These early stories happened in books like Action 24ֱ or Superman Family where Babs would find herself guest starring alongside Kara to take on threats, like...well, Cleopatra.

Don’t worry, that sort of thing was actually pretty normal for the Silver Age, if you can believe it.

In SUPERMAN FAMILY #171, Babs and Kara go up against the Queen of the Nile to stop her from taking over America. Cleopatra (or, rather, the person being possessed by Cleopatra...it’s a little complicated) is even able to best Kara, however briefly, before Barbara swings in to turn the tides and save the day. This was the start of a beautiful friendship, paving future moments of camaraderie between the heroes in their respective “family” books for several years to come.

Of course, this would come to an end with Crisis on Infinite Earths, the event that famously killed off Supergirl. Tragically, before the event came to a close, Babs even read the eulogy at Kara’s funeral. After the event, however, both characters were reinvented for the newly established continuity and had no association with one another at all.

But never fear, their story doesn’t end there.

Art by Inaki Miranda and Eva De La Cruz from Batgirl Annual #1

Getting Animated

You can add one of the most iconic Batgirl and Supergirl team-ups to the long list of things Batman: The Animated Series has given us—something that no doubt deserves to be right up there with Harley Quinn and Gotham City’s police zeppelins.

In season four’s “Girls Night Out,” Livewire escapes from a prison transport from Metropolis to Gotham and begins to stir up all kinds of trouble in the city. Naturally this disaster happens almost immediately after Batman has left town and left Babs in charge of keeping things together while he’s away.

Typical.

Thankfully, a call from Bruce (meant for Clark, who, fortuitously enough, is also out of town) alerts Kara to Livewire’s activity and she’s able to fly to Gotham to help...but not before Livewire forms a team up of her own with Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy.

Not to be deterred by the mounting challenge, Kara and Babs buckle down to save the city... Which is no small task, considering the eyes of the GCPD are on them, the stakes are high, and they’re both eager to prove themselves as every bit the heroes as their mentors. Luckily, some quick thinking leads them to swap out their villains (Kara taking on Ivy and Harley, Babs taking on Livewire) and set things right at the end of the night.

Despite being their only official crossover episode, “Girls Night Out” kicked off a major friendship between Kara and Babs that would run in the background of the animated DC Universe for years to come. According to Clark in the Justice League animated show, they even went on a vacation cruise together to take some time away from the super hero business.

If that doesn’t say “best friends for life,” I don’t know what does.

Art by Inaki Miranda and Eva De La Cruz from Batgirl Annual #1

Through the Multiverse

Back in the comics universe, Kara and Babs were never really able to meet up after Crisis on Infinite Earths. Kara—at least, the modern incarnation of Kara we’d recognize today—wasn’t established in post-Crisis continuity until 2004, much, much after Babs had already begun working exclusively as Oracle. The friendship Babs and Kara shared in the pre-Crisis world was semi-transplanted over to Power Girl after the continuity realignment, and prior to 2004, Supergirl was a mantle taken up by several unrelated characters such as clones, angels and genetically modified vagrants.

Still, that didn’t stop writers and artists from exploring their relationship, even if they had to do it outside of the main continuity.

In 1998, the Elseworlds one-shot story ELSEWORLD’S FINEST: SUPERGIRL AND BATGIRL was released, exploring the idea of a world where Superman and Batman had never existed at all. Instead, Kara and Babs were set up to take their place—Kara as the only surviving Kryptonian on Earth and Babs as an orphaned, self-taught martial artist vigilante.

Sounds kind of familiar, right?

Elseworlds Babs took more of her queues from stories like THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS than she did her main continuity incarnation, ruling Gotham with an iron fist and refusing to allow any metahumans to operate within the city’s limits at all. Luckily, Kara has never been a fan of listening to rules (no matter what universe she’s in,) so when Babs gets herself in over her head in a fight against Luthor and the Joker, Supergirl is there to save the day, invited or otherwise.

The two form a begrudging friendship, similar to the earliest days of their counterparts back in the regular, non-Elseworlds continuity. Eventually however, they’re shown putting aside their differences and forging a friendship that lasts even after the masks and uniforms are traded back in for civvies.

You can catch the next chapter in Batgirl and Supergirl’s amazing, continuity spanning friendship in BATGIRL ANNUAL #1, in stores this week, as Kara and Babs band together for the first time in the Rebirth era to take on one of the looming mysteries kept within the walls of CADMUS. But let’s not overlook how they sound. Whether it’s the iconic, influential work of master composers like John Williams, Shirley Walker or Hans Zimmer, the retro kitsch associated with shows like 1966’s Batman or 1973’s Super Friends, or the poppy, irresistible hooks of the recent DC Super Hero Girls theme, “Get Your Cape On,” DC has a long legacy of unforgettable music.

In 2010, WaterTower Music paid tribute to this with the release of the critically-acclaimed The Music of DC 24ֱ: 75th Anniversary Collection. Featuring unforgettable themes from all throughout DC’s history, the collection found its way into the homes and playlists of many a DC fan. You’re in luck because we’ve been given one of the never-before-released songs to exclusively stream for you…and this one will take you back all the way back to 1978.

This theme is from the third series of Super Friends cartoons. As longtime fans may recall, in this series, Lex Luthor assembled a team of 13 villains (why is it always 13 with these cartoon villains?) and dubbed this unsavory group the Legion of Doom. They built their headquarters in a murky swamp and pledged to wipe out the Super Friends. This song, “Challenge of The Superfriends” by Hoyt Curtin, opens by introducing the villains and then launches into the heroic theme of the previous Super Friends cartoons to introduce the Justice League of America. They're two of the most well-known, popular, and instantly recognizable super heroes in all of fiction. They both strive to uphold justice. They both take on dangerous criminals and super-powered madmen. They both serve on the legendary Justice League. Separately, they're two of the world's greatest super heroes. Together, they're the World's Finest.

Throughout their 75 yearlong careers, over the course of multiple media, Superman and Batman have encountered each other on a number of occasions. Sometimes as allies, sometimes as enemies, almost every single time for an awesome adventure. Currently, you can find these adventures monthly in the pages of Batman/Superman by Greg Pak, and in about two years, you'll be seeing the two team up on the big screen for the first time in the Man of Steel sequel, with Henry Cavill reprising his role as Superman and Academy Award-winner Ben Affleck donning the cape and cowl.

With the latest issue of their team-up title out this week (kicking off the "First Contact" crossover), we decided to reminisce on some of their previous adventures—mainly ones where they don't beat each other up—and give you all 6 Superman/Batman Team Ups Worthy of the the Award of Awesome!

1. Superman/Batman: Public Enemies

Prior to Batman/Superman, there was Superman/Batman, a title that kicked off with a pretty badass arc that had then-President Lex Luthor manipulating events in order to paint the Dark Knight and Man of Steel as wanted fugitives. This led to, essentially, Superman and Batman vs. EVERYONE. They took on supervillains, mercenaries, and even their fellow superheroes in battle after awesome battle. The storyline was even adapted into an animated film, and speaking of animation...

2. World's Finest (DCAU)

It was a moment fans of Batman: The Animated Series and Superman: The Animated Series had been waiting for. Sure, there was Super Friends before that, but this was different. The Animated Series gave us a much more mature and grounded version of these characters, and they were going to finally unite onscreen to take on their greatest enemies. The payoff was everything we wanted and more. Kevin Conroy's Batman and Tim Daly's Superman played off each other perfectly, as did Mark Hamill's Joker and Clancy Brown's Lex Luthor. The action was great, the story was great, and the animation was perfect.

3. LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes

Before the LEGO versions of the World's Greatest Super Heroes appeared together on the big screen in this year’s hilariously amazing LEGO Movie, they joined forces in the world of video games, with unquestionably spectacular LEGOtastic results. It's one of the most fun co-op games we've ever played and just thinking about it makes us want to go play it again.

4. Earth 2 #1

What makes this particular team-up noteworthy? Because it featured the Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman of Earth 2 sacrificing their lives in order to beat back the forces of Darkseid. It was entirely unexpected, undoubtedly heroic and, honestly, it's the way we want to believe these heroes would go out: fighting side-by-side as friends till the end.

5. Superman #76

It's the first Superman/Batman team up story ever! It's a super fun Silver Age story and deserves to be checked out just for its historical importance. You can actually find the full tale in the recent Superman: A Celebration of 75 Years collection. Check out "The Mightiest Team in the World," a.k.a "That time Superman and Batman randomly and coincidentally ended up sharing a cabin while on a cruise." Like we said, Silver Age.

6. World's Finest #195

What more do you need to know than this cover? The story inside is just as amazing and crazy, but the cover... the cover alone is one of the most insanely awesome comic covers ever.

There are, of course, plenty more instances of Superman and Batman teaming up. We've only covered a few of them above, so in the comments, let us know what some of your own personal favorite adventures are.

<div class="field field-name-field-tags
