Each of them redefined the word "hero."

The mysterious power known as the Speed Force is an energy field that has, over the centuries, granted incredible powers of velocity to certain heroes. The most famous of these is the Flash, also known as the Fastest Man Alive. Ever since the days of World War II, there has been a man clad in red who can run at impossible speeds, using his power to save lives and defend those who cannot defend themselves. All between the ticks of a second.

In the 1940s, college student Jay Garrick acquired his super-speed abilities in a random lab accident and became the first DC Super Hero to go by the name the Flash. Years later, Jay was succeeded by police scientist Barry Allen, until Barry’s former kid partner Wally West took up the mantle at a time when Barry was considered dead. But, when Barry returned, he became the Flash once again. All three generations of speedsters have been cornerstone members of both the Justice Society and Justice League.

The Flash has mastery over not just speed, but time itself, and he has often used his powers to travel though different eras and even into other dimensions. Although the Flash has not always been fast enough to outrun personal tragedy when it has come for him, he always does his best to prevent the same from happening to the people of Central City and Keystone City. In so doing, he's earned himself a spot among the greatest Super Heroes the DC Universe has ever known.

<div class="field field-name-field-facebook field-type-link-field If you’re new here, this is the drill: I’ve been banned from watching DCTV with my friends because they claim I can’t keep my mouth shut during the episodes. I get it, but there are so many cool DC Easter eggs to point out and the world must know! Absolutely! 100%!!

At any rate, since I can’t yell them out to my friends while we’re watching, we’ve created this column as a place for me to share my findings with you, DC’s truest fans. This Easter egg hunt isn’t just for me, though. I encourage all of you to play along each month and compare our findings. Feel free to tweet me at @TBUJosh if you found something cool that I missed. It’s more fun when we play together!

So, with that in mind, let’s start this month’s hunt in Central City…

The Flash

It was an interesting month for the Flash, as Joe West fought for his life against the creepy villain Rag Doll in the episode “So Long and Goodnight.”

Usually, I only cover character Easter eggs for people making their first appearance, but since I didn’t get a chance to write about Rag Doll last season, I thought now would be a good time. Rag Doll is actually one of the Flash’s oldest enemies, dating all the way back to the Golden Age. The creepy-as-hell villain first appeared in 1942’s Flash 24ֱ #36, where he fought the original Flash Jay Garrick. His MO was similar then to what it is now—he would use his contorting skills to hide INSIDE of a rag doll so he could rob stores.

If you’re suddenly eyeing your child’s doll collection in fear and suspicion, I can’t say I blame you!

Here’s a fun fact: Rag Doll is voiced by Phil LaMarr, an actor who is no stranger to the DC Universe. LaMarr voiced Static in the Static Shock animated series, John Stewart on Justice League and Aquaman on Young Justice. Heck, this isn’t even his only Arrowverse role! LaMarr also portrays J’onn’s brother Malefic on Supergirl. That’s quite a DC legacy!

And speaking of Supergirl…

Supergirl

The Girl of Steel has plenty to worry about, with Leviathan and the Luthor family each plotting their own deadly schemes. Gemma Cooper, the new Leviathan leader who is secretly an extraterrestrial named Gamemnae, unleashed her power in the episode “Deus Lex Machina,” and if you’re a Superman fan it might have seemed a bit familiar. Gemma’s transformation was reminiscent of one that Vera Webster went through in Superman III (above). If it’s been a while since you’ve seen that work of 1983 brilliance, Vera was a corporate villain who became corrupted by an evil supercomputer (the ’80s were something else) and attacked Superman.

Quite a few viewers noticed the similarities between Vera and Gemma’s techno-transformations, and since Supergirl has a habit of paying homage to the classic Superman films, the idea that it’s deliberate isn’t so far-fetched. By the way, did you know that the episode was directed by Supergirl herself, Melissa Benoist? She did a phenomenal job!

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow

I can’t believe the internet hasn’t exploded after the last few episodes of Legends of Tomorrow expanded the Arrowverse. “Crisis on Infinite Earths” was cool, but Legends did something pretty amazing and added Riverdale and Supernatural to the multiverse while we weren’t looking. During the episode “Romeo v Juliet: Dawn of Justness,” Nate told a group of Shakespearean actors that they had been replaced by Riverdale. That offhand reference made me smile, and it raised some questions. If Nate watches Riverdale, does he also see promos for Legends?

That type of paradox is on brand for the Legends, but things went a step further in the episode “Zari, Not Zari” where the team actually traveled to the set of Supernatural! How weird was it to hear Sara say Sam and Dean’s names? We even got to see the Legends standing next to Dean’s car, Baby! It felt like my fanfiction was coming to life, and I want more. I mean, obviously we shouldn’t expect Archie Andrews or Sam Winchester to board the Waverider anytime soon…but with a show like Legends of Tomorrow, I wouldn’t rule anything out.

Of course, Legends of Tomorrow featured some great surprise DC characters as well. The episode “The Great British Fake Off” featured a powerful magical entity known as Enchantress. First appearing in 1966’s Strange Adventures #187, Enchantress is sometimes portrayed as an antihero and other times as a straight-out villain. She has a human host named June Moone, and like her television counterpart, she’s able to transform by saying “Enchantress.” Of course, I’d imagine that many of you were probably first introduced to Enchantress in 2016’s Suicide Squad movie.

Also in the episode “Zari, Not Zari,” Nate and Behrad playfully refer to themselves as the Wonder Twins, a brother-sister alien team. The shapeshifting alien teens first appeared in the Super Friends cartoon, alongside their monkey Gleek. You might also recall that Gleek was referenced at the end of the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover, which adds another piece of evidence to my “the Wonder Twins are coming” theory notebook. It’s right next to my “Supernatural-Riverdale-Arrowverse Crossover Ideas” binder. If enough of you tweet at me, I might share it.

Batwoman

The last stop in our Easter egg hunt is Gotham City, where Kate Kane is currently trying to keep the peace as Batwoman. Of course, Gotham being Gotham, the place is overrun with criminals and sometimes Kate bites off more than she can chew, like in the episode “If You Believe in Me, I’ll Believe in You” where she was captured by mobsters. The Batwoman showrunners did their comic book homework, and those gangsters weren’t just random nobodies. Vasily Kosov was namedropped, and he’s pretty obscure. Kosov first appeared in Detective 24ֱ #742, written by Greg Rucka. (Rucka also wrote the critically acclaimed storyline Batwoman: Elegy, which most of this season has been based off of.) Johnny Sabatino was another one of the mobsters, and he was prominently featured in Detective 24ֱ #844. By the way, Batwoman uses the callsign “Red One” during this mission, which was also her comms codename during her 2017 DC Rebirth series.

In the prior episode, “A Narrow Escape,” Batwoman faced off against a terrorist known as the Detonator. Although their backgrounds differ, Detonator shares a name and a demolition hobby with his comic book counterpart, first introduced in Robin #168. The comic book Detonator was a member of the League of Assassins, working for Ra’s al Ghul.

Oh, and don’t think I overlooked Tommy Elliot. Those bandages sure looked familiar, but it seems like our Easter egg baskets are full, so it’s time for me to….hush. Don’t worry, I have a feeling that I’ll have plenty to say about Tommy in our next column. For now, thanks for playing along, and if I missed anything huge, you know where to find me!

<span style="letter-spacing: 0.39px; font-style: 10:00

One of my favorite things about the DCTV universe—most specifically the shows on The CW—is the crossover events. Watching all of the heroes get to work together across the span of multiple nights is such a fun adventure, and it always makes me a little sad when everyone goes back to their "normal" lives.

The most recent crossover event, "Crisis on Infinite Earths," was the most spectacular one yet, full of fist-pump moments and massive grin-inducing cameos. But the part that made me the most excited—you know, other than the fact that our heroes saved the day yet again—was that they're all now in one universe. THEY CAN HANG OUT ON THE REG. Setting aside the truly horrendous thoughts about all the people who died and the incalculable number of worlds lost during the Crisis...they can finally connect with each other and not have to worry about the world ending! (At least, not more than they already do every minute of every day. They are superheroes, after all.)

That’s huge, people! Maybe not as huge as seeing Tom Welling back as Clark Kent and watching Kevin Conroy play a live action Bruce Wayne for the first time ever, but still pretty darn major.

Or perhaps…not major at all. Maybe the best thing about having all of the Arrowverse on one Earth is all of the smaller, less epic moments it could bring about.

With that positive spin in mind, I couldn't help coming up with five ideas for mini-crossover events that I think we—and the heroes themselves—deserve...

Supergirl/Legends of Tomorrow

Brainy attends one of Mick's/Rebecca Silver's book events hoping to gain romantic insights that he can then use to woo Nia. It obviously goes hilariously awry, but Nia sees it as endearing in the end as she often does his crazy romance antics. (This would have to take place when Brainy's a little less preoccupied with the events of the current Supergirl season, natch, but I have hopes that these crazy kids can eventually make it work!)

Batwoman/Black Lightning

Jacob and Jefferson meet for coffee to chat and commiserate about their daughters...and their daughters' issues. J'onn could join them—he's very much a father figure to the Danvers sisters—but three shows worth of dads coming together might need to be saved for an actual crossover event. (Or a Father’s Day episode!)

Supergirl/Batwoman

Alex and Kelly make a trip to Kate's bar. Both women deserve a night out—they work so hard!—and Kate's bar is a welcoming place that also serves as a way to fight back against certain judgmental folk in Gotham. Both Alex and Kelly enjoy occasionally "sticking it to the man," and there's no better place to do it in the new 'verse while having a quality drink.

Supergirl/Batwoman #2

Kara and Alex have a sit down with Kate and Alice in an attempt to provide a little sister counseling. Alice needs professional help, but until that day comes, it would be nice to see the Supergirl siblings offering some of their (sometimes hard-learned) sisterly lessons to the Kane twins. I'm not sure if Kara and Alex would be able to stop themselves from arresting Alice, given that they err very much on the side of the right—and Alice, uh, does not—but if they thought they were getting through to her, they might let her off a little easy.

The Flash/Supergirl

Barry becomes a regular at karaoke night at Al's Dive Bar. We know both Barry and Kara can sing—and sing beautifully together. I would absolutely not be mad if Barry joined her for a few duets every week, and if that meant more musical episodes? I am here. For. It.

The possibilities are near endless now that all of these heroes are just a quick flight, sprint, or time jump away from each other. I for one hope we get to see more of this sort of thing in the future!

Mandy Curtis writes about comics, specifically DC’s Young Adult line, and TV for DC24ֱ.com. means Easter is right around the corner. We know that this year, traditional Easter egg hunts may be in short supply—but we can still have them Couch Club-style! Every month, I break down our favorite Easter eggs we caught while watching #DCTV. It’s all the fun of a regular egg hunt, but you don’t have to leave your couch and we get to talk about cool DC lore. With that in mind, let’s begin!

The Flash

Flash fans had plenty to be excited about this month, thanks to the return of Wally West. When he sped onto the scene once again in the episode “Death of the Speed Force,” I knew it was going to be one of my favorites of the season. Wally mastered the Speed Force, and he knew things about it that even Barry didn’t.

It might be hard to believe if you’re not familiar with Flash history, but that’s comic book canon. During Mark Waid’s legendary Flash run from the 1990’s, the Speed Force was introduced and Wally learned how to use it to boost his powers. By the time Barry Allen returned from a 23-year absence (it was a Crisis thing), Wally had surpassed his former mentor and had powers he didn’t realize were possible. In fact, Wally had learned about the existence of the Speed Force years before Barry could even comprehend it.

Later time travel shenanigans suggested that Barry created the Speed Force, but it doesn’t change the fact that Wally West had a better relationship with it. Of course, the Arrowverse version of Wally didn’t use those powers to realize his sister has been stuck in a mirror for a few months, so they do have their limits. (I have a lot to say about Wally’s powerup, so don’t be surprised if there’s an entire article devoted to it in the near future.)

The episode also namedropped Quimby Labs, which is likely a reference to Ira Quimby, one of the DC Universe’s many mad scientists. Quimby first appeared in Mystery in Space #87 where he battled Hawkman. At the time, he was calling himself I.Q. and had an arsenal of goofy sci-fi weapons. We could only speculate, but I hope this namedrop is setting the stage for a future appearance. I want to see Flash fight a guy with rocket boots!

Supergirl

Was anybody else creeped out by Obsidian Platinum in the episode “Alex in Wonderland”? That virtual world was pretty unnerving. Don’t get me wrong, it was cool to see Alex kicking butt as Supergirl, but terrifying to see her get lost within this digital world of mindless NPCs. I did get a smile when the evil Hank Henshaw summoned her, though: “Supergirl, this is Hank Henshaw. There’s only one thing alive on less than four legs that can hear this frequency, and that’s you.” It’s the exact same message that Gene Hackman’s Lex Luthor sent Christopher Reeve’s Superman in the 1978 Superman movie.

Of course, Hackman’s Luthor didn’t identify himself as Henshaw, and he got Superman’s gender correctly, but otherwise it’s the same message. David Harewood even used some of the same vocal inflections Hackman did. If Jon Cryer needs a day off, we know where to find our substitute Luthor. And before you call me crazy, just remember that this is a universe where shapeshifting and body-swapping are par for the course.

Black Lightning

All rise for the honorable judges—and trust us, these two judges deserve your highest honors. In the Black Lightning season three finale “The Book of War: Chapter Three: Liberation,” Jefferson gave an explosive testimony to a panel of judges, with two of them having very interesting names. Judge Isabella and Judge Von Eeden were played by none other than Black Lightning’s creators, writer Tony Isabella and artist Trevor Von Eeden. If it wasn’t for this creative duo, the world would never have met Jefferson Pierce, Lynn Stewart, Tobias Whale, Peter Gambi or Garfield High. It’s not every day that our heroes come face to face with their creators, and I think Jefferson handled the situation well.

Seriously, can you imagine a better way to end the season?

Batwoman

What did you all think of Duela Dent, the psycho slasher from the episode “Grinning Ear to Ear”? If you thought she was a nutjob, wait until you get a load of her comic counterpart.

When comic readers first met Duela in Batman Family #6, she was calling herself the Joker’s Daughter. This early version of the character dressed up as gender-swapped versions of Gotham’s greatest criminals and caused mischief for Robin. She later revealed that it was a ploy to get invited to join the Teen Titans…and amazingly, it worked! (What can I say? It was a different time.)

Duela’s changed her identity dozens of times since then, and at one point took on the name Harlequin years before Margot Robbie picked up her first mallet. For a while the mystery of her parentage was a running joke, until it was revealed she was the daughter of an alternate universe version of the Joker. Currently, Duela’s living literally underground in Gotham and wearing a mask made from the actual Joker’s carved-off face, so let’s not make too much light of her. (Her shocking final scene in “Grinning Ear to Ear” was almost certainly a nod to this.) The Joker’s Daughter can be a formidable villain when she sets her mind to it and there’s no guarantee we’ve seen the last of her on Batwoman. For more on Ms. Dent’s bizarre history, check out this article I wrote for DC Universe.

Duela’s uncle Harvey was also mentioned, and longtime Gothamites might know him better as the villain Two-Face. It sounds like this version of Harvey hasn’t had his face scarred yet, so let’s hope he remains careful. In the comics, there was a brief period where Deula claimed that Two-Face was her father, which explained her unusual first name. It turned out that she was lying, though. She does that a lot.

We could go on, but my basket is getting full. To be honest, I want to hear what you found. Did I overlook something big? class="body-insertable">
Ralph Dibny may not have all the smooth moves of that other famous globe-trotting secret agent, but as Flash fans are about to discover, he can certainly rock a tuxedo. Tonight’s episode, “License to Elongate” features the Elongated Man teaming up with Barry Allen to hunt down Sue Dearbon, the ever-elusive woman at the center of the missing persons case Ralph has been working on all season. It’s also the second episode to be directed by Danielle Panabaker, who cut her directorial teeth filling in Nora West-Allen’s backstory and introducing the villain Godspeed to the popular DCTV series. In that memorable episode, Panabaker demonstrated a real skill at directing scenes filled with unforgettable and often side-splitting banter between characters—something that will be on full display in tonight’s often humorous outing.

After talking to Panabaker for her first episode as director, we thought it would be fun to check in with her again now that she’s finished her second. The result was a lively conversation with a talented actor who has clearly also fallen in love with directing. But then again, who better to juggle two separate personas than the woman who plays both Caitlin Snow and Killer Frost on screen?

So far, you’ve been playing Killer Frost for most of this season. How does it feel to let your frostier side come to the forefront?

It’s been a lot of fun to play Killer Frost this season. I think it was such a nice opportunity. We’ve seen a lot of Caitlin over the years, and it’s great for Killer Frost to be able to take the driver’s seat and make choices. Particularly as an actor, it’s fun because she makes mistakes and she’s imperfect. It’s been nice to explore that.

It’s been a challenging season for Caitlin and Killer Frost in that this season’s villain, Dr. Rosso, was a colleague of Caitlin’s. How do you think it feels seeing a friend of yours become a villain?

I think it’s really difficult. Killer Frost has her instincts about Ramsey, which are very different than Caitlin’s instincts. Obviously, Caitlin has a history with Ramsey. She wants to believe that there’s still good inside him, and that she can affect change in a positive direction. But Killer Frost is a little bit more skeptical and instinctually doesn’t trust Ramsey. So, it’s interesting to see these two people have such different takes on Ramsey Rosso. I think it’s probably hard for Caitlin to not be able to change him.

What does it create when Killer Frost and Caitlin have that sort of fundamental disagreement?

We don’t see it much on the show, but I do think there are conversations that are probably had between the two of them off screen.

It’s also hard because you’re dealing with Barry’s looming death. Do you think Killer Frost and Caitlin have accepted it, or are they still trying to figure out a way to prevent it?

I think they’re still trying to figure out a way to prevent it. I don’t think Team Flash is particularly good at accepting any fate, quite frankly, as you see them also continue to struggle with “Crisis.” Barry’s upcoming death is the same. I don’t think they’re just laying down and accepting it, they’re fighting as much as they can.

This week’s episode, “License to Elongate,” is your second episode as a director. Can you tell us what it’s about?

“License to Elongate” is a breath of fresh air before we get into two really dark episodes. Barry has been preparing the different members of Team Flash for life post-Crisis. Recently, we saw him take Cisco aside and really prepare him to be the team leader, and he’s trying to teach Killer Frost how to channel her anger. This episode is really about Barry and Ralph’s relationship—they go off on an adventure to find Sue Dearbon. It’s a bit of a James Bond episode for the two of them. They put their tuxes on and they go to a fancy gala. They have a lot of fun and they also learn and grow along the way.

You mentioned it’s James Bond influenced. Are you a Bond fan?

I’d seen a couple movies prior to this, and over the last few months I’ve seen quite a few more. That was really fun. When you go back and watch the James Bond movies from the beginning, they’ve changed so much from the Sean Connery and Roger Moore ones to the Daniel Craig ones. It’s fun to see how much has evolved and along with things like the updated special effects.

Do you have a favorite Bond?

I have to be honest, I feel like Daniel Craig is a great Bond. I think the last couple of movies have been really spectacular.

Was directing your second episode of The Flash easier than directing your first? Were there any unanticipated issues that came up this time around?

I wouldn’t necessarily say directing my second episode was easier. Every episode presents its own challenges. What’s fun for me is that I’m still learning, and it’s great to get to stretch different muscles. “Godspeed” was much more visual effects heavy than “License to Elongate.” It wasn’t necessarily easier. I certainly had more confidence because I had the first one under my belt and I felt like I knew what I was doing a little bit more—how to communicate and how to get what I needed.

I love it. There are so many talented people who work on our show. Getting to collaborate with them and hopefully elevate them to bring their best work is a lot of fun for me.

Do you think Ralph’s superpower would be more beneficial to an actor or to a director?

The ability to stretch?

Yes, but he can also change how he looks, right?

Yeah! It’s hard to say. I can see as an actor how useful it would be to be able to transform yourself, but also as a director, a lot of what you do is about your ability to communicate with people in a way that they can hear. It’s a lot of people skills, and there’s a certain element of stretching that goes into that as well. It’s less physical, but it has an element of adapting your working process to whoever you’re working with.

So, you think it would equally benefit both?

Absolutely.

It’s always fun to see you direct The Flash, but do you have interest in directing other things going forward? Maybe a film or a different TV show?

I love directing, and I can’t wait to direct something else. It can be a little challenging because our hiatus is so short, but I’m really looking forward to directing something else. What I love, in terms of television shows, are often shows that are a little more relationship-based. I loved You, so if it turned out that I could direct an episode of that, it would be so great. But I also feel like I’ve been lucky in terms of working on a show with so many special effects. That’s a particular skill set, so I’d like to keep using that, but in a different capacity.

Without spoiling anything, how much fun was it shooting “Crisis on Infinite Earths”?

I truly don’t know how they pull these crossovers off. It’s an incredible feat. We do it for the fans because they love it so much. I’m just excited for the fans to see everyone. Obviously, it’s the biggest one we’ve ever done—five shows. We’re even bringing Cress over from Black Lightning, so it’s pretty epic. I’m excited for fans to see it and hopefully they enjoy it.

"License to Elongate," directed by Danielle Panabaker, airs tonight at 8 p.m. (7 p.m. CST) on The CW's The Flash. My original assignment was covering just The Flash and I’ve stayed pretty close to this lane ever since. I realize you might be saying, “Ashley, time travel comes with the territory.” You would, of course, be right, dear reader. From the jump we know time travel is going to be a major part of The Flash with the whole “Flash Disappears in Crisis” reveal the show has been circling ever since its premiere.

I never really believed we’d get time travel (or something like it) on Arrow, though.

Arrow isn’t dealing with time travel as literally as The Flash does, but beginning with the seventh season and carrying on to the current final run of the show, the moments of each episode that have previously been devoted to flashbacks have now been assigned to flash forwards. We’re experiencing a narrative travel through time, a shift from the past, through the present, all the way to the future. Interestingly enough, The Flash has also been dealing with future storylines. Last season, this took the form of Nora West-Allen’s journey back from 2049 and her tragic demise. This season, it’s dealing with her father’s tragic demise (or so Barry currently believes).

Looking to the future tells us a couple different things about the shows. The obvious is that it can set up a passing of the torch. Knowing that Arrow is on the brink of wrapping up (only a few more months to get in all the Arrow Couch Club articles we can dream up!), it makes sense to explore the legacies of each of the characters who were so pivotal in crafting the CW’s entire DCTV Universe. Depending on how the William/Mia/Connor Hawke/John Diggle Jr. storyline plays out, Arrow’s future timeline literally holds the legacy of the show in its hands. If this team of characters is able to set Star City to rights, then everything Team Arrow has been working toward was successful. They were the ones who set Star City on the path to betterment, and their successors were the ones who got it across the finish line. If the new team fails, however, then the show’s characters and the audience are left with a greater question about the efficacy of vigilantism and superheroes. Either can be an interesting narrative choice if it’s well executed.

On The Flash, it serves largely the same purpose. Since we know Barry disappears—and now, seemingly dies—during the events of “Crisis on Infinite Earth,” that leaves the whole future and its population to pick up the legacy the Flash threw down. (The problem with this, of course, is that it’s not obvious who could possibly fill Barry’s shoes. Nora’s dead, Jay’s retired and Wally is off doing who knows what.) If Barry figures out a way to stave off his seemingly imminent demise, then the future is up for grabs again. Exactly how it all turns out will let us know, as viewers, just how important Barry Allen’s Flash was to Central City and the world after all.

Both shows are using their flash forward time stamps to engage in discourse about exactly how impactful the founding heroes of the DCTV Universe are. They’re rendering a final judgment on their lead heroes as an era is coming to an end for all of them. Sure, The Flash is sticking around while Arrow is coming to a conclusion, but with a new wave of Arrowverse series either debuting or in the development pipeline, one has to wonder if the finish line is in sight for Barry and Team Flash. It’s clear that the end of an era is upon us and it’s affecting all of space and time as far as the CW shows are concerned.

By reaching so far into the future, narratively, we’re able to get a little more distance from the what’s happening in the main storylines and decide whether or not Teams Flash and Arrow are living up to their full potential.

Thinking about how much is going to change by the end of 2019, it makes complete sense to me that the Arrowverse’s first two shows might want to examine their larger impact. There are things to wrap up and, perhaps, mistakes to be acknowledge and embraced. The results will tell us so much about the current snapshot of the universe these shows are leaving us with…

…and perhaps give us a hint at the likely success of the heroes to come.

Arrow airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. (8 p.m. CST) on The CW. Visit our official Arrow page for more news, features and articles on Oliver Queen's final season.

Ashley V.
