But when she was just an infant, her House fell into chaos following the uprising of the House of Opal and its ruthless ruler, Dark Opal. Thankfully, a witch named Citrina managed to save Amethyst before Dark Opal could assassinate her, sending her to Earth to live with a human family under the assumed name of Amy Winston. When Amy turned 13, however, Dark Opal tracked down her human family and attacked, forcing Amy to learn the truth of her heritage. Amy subsequently returned to Gemworld, where she learned she’d inherited magical abilities and of the duties that fell to her in the wake of her family’s destruction. Now the daughter of two worlds, Amy is forced to balance her love for her adoptive home on Earth and her duty to the people of Gemworld as Amethyst—princess and defender of a realm she’s only beginning to understand.

For more on Amethyst's history, visit her page on That’s why we’re all here, right? The Dark Knight has saved Gotham and the world countless times, and he’s pretty darn good at it. But is he a good leader? That’s not the same thing as being a good hero. Sure, he commands the Batman Family and has trained some of the DC Universe’s greatest heroes, but training and leading aren’t the same thing. This thought recently hit me, and I decided it might be fun to look at the recent Bat-books and compare the leadership techniques of the different Batman Family members.

Damian might be an arrogant lad, but you can’t deny that the Teen Titans respect him…most of the time. Remember, though, Damian is only 13 and he’s already leading a superteam. When I was 13, I was…well…reading the Teen Titans. Have you ever heard someone say they would follow their leader to the depths of Hell? That’s just what happened in Teen Titans #40 when Damian convinced the Titans to take an antidote that would kill them. Their teammate Djinn was trapped in the afterlife, and the only way to save her was to temporarily die themselves.

Asking your teammates to die for you is a risky move, but Robin motivated his troops. There’s a plan to bring everyone back, but it remains to be seen if it will work. Teen Titans #40 does end with Robin and the team flatlining, presumably stuck in Hell. I have faith that the Brat Wonder can get them out of this, but if the heroes are still dead by the end of Teen Titans #41, I might have to change my views on Damian’s leadership skills.

Tim Drake, who is now using the costumed alias Drake, is back with his original team Young Justice, and they’ve been keeping themselves busy. The reformed team hasn’t been together very long and they’re already a well-oiled fighting machine. Young Justice recently helped Superman defend Metropolis from the Legion of Doom in Action 24ֱ #1020 and #1021, and Drake’s leadership skills were on full display. Superman trusted Drake to coordinate his team, while the Man of Steel targeted the enemies. Tim also knew that protecting civilians was the bigger priority and told Young Justice to concentrate their efforts on that, trusting that Superman could save himself. Young Justice trusts Tim, and even the Man of Steel appears to hold him in high regard. (You notice there’s a lot of trust going around in general between all of these heroes—a major difference from how Damian tends to do things.)

Tim Drake knows his team, and he knows that leadership is all about strategy. In Young Justice #14, Drake ordered three of his most powerful players—Wonder Girl, Impulse and Sideways—to leave the battlefield and help Conner. Removing three fighters did put Young Justice at a disadvantage, but Tim was smart enough to know how to divide his teammates, realizing that their power was needed elsewhere.

Speaking of Boy Wonders, did everyone read the Robin 80th Anniversary Super Spectacular that came out last month? It reinforced why Dick Grayson is one of the greatest leaders in the DC Universe. Nightwing understands that if a group is bonded as a family, they’ll perform better as a team. Writer Devin Grayson (no relation) made this her mantra when she wrote the 1999 Titans series. Grayson was given another chance to demonstrate this thesis in the story she wrote for the Robin 80th Anniversary special. In it, the members of H.I.V.E. are reviewing footage from a recent battle with the Titans and marveling at Nightwing’s leadership skills. We told you he was one of the universe’s greatest leaders—even the villains are impressed!

Nightwing even gave the H.I.V.E. leader, Damien Darhk, a tip for good team building—having a pizza night. Is it possible that’s the secret to the Titans success? Pizza parties tend to put people in a good mood, and I’d probably be inclined to follow a leader who offered me a few slices.

I’m going to say something that might make me unpopular: Batman needs to work on his leadership skills. Before you all start tweeting angry words at me, take a look at how he treats the Outsiders! This incarnation of the team has been together less than a year and the Dark Knight is having trouble keeping the group from imploding. In Batman and the Outsiders #9, Bruce’s lack of empathy causes Black Lightning to leave the team. Granted, Ra’s al Ghul is partially responsible, as he manipulated events to drive a wedge between them, but ultimately Batman couldn’t connect with Jefferson.

We could try blaming it on Black Lightning, but it wasn’t an isolated incident. Later that same issue, Batman chastises Orphan and Signal for keeping secrets from him and the duo storms off when Superman interrupts their reprimand. Batman has Cassandra and Duke’s best interests at heart, but he doesn’t know how to communicate with them. In the most recent issue, Batman and the Outsiders #11, the Outsiders fought off a group of assassins without Batman’s help and they didn’t do too badly. The battle makes it clear—the Dark Knight has put together a great team, he just doesn’t know how to lead them.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a Batman fan. I wouldn’t be writing this column if I wasn’t. But it’s important to recognize the Dark Knight’s flaws. Most people love Batman because he’s human, and being human means making mistakes and being imperfect. Batman is a master tactician, a skilled fighter, and one of the best trainers in the hero business. As a team leader though, he needs some work. Maybe a pizza night would do the trick?

Joshua Lapin-Bertone writes about TV, movies and comics for DC24ֱ.com and DCUniverse.com, is a regular contributor to the Couch Club and writes our monthly Batman column, "Gotham Gazette." It’s been an interesting few years for Wally, across all media. His Arrowverse counterpart (more on him later) has mastered the Speed Force and found inner peace, while over on the Young Justice animated series, Wally’s friends (and viewers like me) have struggled dealing with his apparent death. As for Wally’s comic book counterpart, it would be an understatement to say that things have been rocky.

In the past few years, Wally has been erased from reality, returned to Earth only to find a world that didn’t remember him, and when he went to therapy to help him deal with some of this, he accidentally wound up killing a bunch of his friends. Yeah, it’s been a rough decade for a hero who was running strong for so long prior to that.

Thankfully there’s a new beginning ahead, or so we hope. If you read the Flash Forward limited series and Flash #750, you’d know that Wally now has godlike powers, and he’s set his sights on fixing the DC Universe’s fractured timeline. While looking through the history of the DC Universe, Wally noticed that there was some continuity hiccups between the New 52 and the current Rebirth timeline. Wally thinks it’s his job to fix the discrepancies, and that’s quite a hefty goal for someone who couldn’t control his powers last year.

Time is broken, but if there’s one thing we’ve learned from…well…any Flash comic or television episode, it’s that nothing good ever comes out of a speedster messing with the timeline. Will trying to fix things cause more damage? Wally needs a win, and although I have my doubts, I think he could land this plane. It’s been a crazy few years for the Scarlet Speedster and restoring the DC Universe would be a satisfying redemption arc. If anybody could pull this off, Wally West can.

This brings us to the small screen version of Wally West. Did anyone else love his return in the episode “Death of the Speed Force”? It’s been too long since we’ve seen Keiynan Lonsdale don the Kid Flash uniform, and it was glorious. Our precious Wally has done so much growing, and he’s no longer the rebellious street-racer we met back in season two. Wally seems happy now, and it’s refreshing.

Think about it, how often do we get to see our Arrowverse friends happy? Like his comic book counterpart, Wally has embraced his relationship with the Speed Force. While he fortunately hasn’t had to contend with the same tragedy as the Wally from the comics, TV Wally’s mastery of the Speed Force puts him ahead of Barry. And you know what? That’s appropriate.

During Mark Waid’s legendary run on The Flash in the 1990’s, the concept of the Speed Force was introduced, and Wally used it to power up and push the limit of his abilities. Wally’s speedster abilities surpassed Barry’s for a time, and he was able to understand things about his power that Barry had never even fathomed.

The CW's version of Wally seems to be following that model. How unusual was it to see Wally teaching Barry about the Speed Force? The student has become the master! I wish he had stuck around longer. With his Zen attitude and connection to the Speed Force, he might have been able to realize that his sister Iris was trapped in the mirror dimension. Barry needs Wally’s guidance, especially since he keeps on making questionable decisions with his powers. I hope Keiynan Lonsdale can make a few more return appearances, because his Wally seems to have his s**t together, which is rare for young people like us in this generation. Maybe he can counsel me next?

The Young Justice version of Wally seems to be gone, the Arrowverse version of Wally has mastered the Speed Force, while the comics version of Wally might destroy it. Wally West’s destiny continues to be written, and the pages can’t turn fast enough.

Flash Forward can now be read in full digitally. You can stream"The Death of the Speed Force" and other episodes of The Flash on The CW's website.

<span style="letter-spacing: 0.39px; DC Nation talked to Reeder about her plans for growing Amethyst by upending her status quo…and the psychedelic visuals she has planned along the way.

Anyone who follows you on social media can see your affection for Amethyst. What is it about the character that you love so much?

Princess Amethyst and Gemworld embody all the best elements of children’s fantasy from my childhood. I was born in 1980 and most of my all-time favorite cartoons came from that decade. There is something about the worldbuilding—these fantastical worlds that felt old and new all at once—that became a part of me, influencing the way I dream and see beauty. I wanted to contribute to the world that helped form mine!

I also think it’s really special that Amethyst and Gemworld exist within the DCU. We’re talking female lead, fantasy and an overabundance of purple. That is something I want to encourage and protect!

I love that the princess herself has ties to Earth. She represents us in this strange world, and we get to experience it with her. She’s an earnest 16-year-old who wants to do the right thing—the real trick is, how do you know what’s right?

Also, her name is Amy. How cool is that?

Readers have seen Amethyst in Young Justice as of late, but this is the first solo series for the character in years. How do you see her as uniquely meaningful today?

I love this question because it’s exactly what sparked the whole plot. Amy has a “Little Miss Perfect” personality, and as a writer that’s not always easy to work with, especially with readers looking for a little more meat. How do I write a story about a princess who already has everything figured out?

For me, it made sense to take the ground out from beneath her—and that starts out literally. She returns to the Amethyst Realm and it’s torn out, her people nowhere to be found. And in her quest for answers, she learns all sorts of other things that turn her world on its head.

For me, upending the status quo seemed like the best way for readers to realistically identify with someone who has that much power over others.

Exploring Gemworld looks to be a huge part of this. What can you share about your process in building the world?

Gemworld gives me so much to work with! Reading the original series by Dan Mishkin, Gary Cohn and Ernie Colon, it’s clear that almost anything goes and I’m embracing that. This is a dreamland. It’s divided up into 12 realms, all based on the birthstones, which I love. I’m giving each realm a different geography and a distinct look to each set of people. I have a fascination with landscapes and cultures, and with that I’m trying to create something that feels entirely new.

I’ve also done quite a bit of crystal research! Given that crystals are such a big trend these days, I thought it would be fun to amp up that angle, too. I’m paying attention to the patterns in raw crystal formation, and I’ve thrown a little bit of crystal healing in there, too. It is truly a gem-obsessed book.

Gemworld is a vast and obviously colorful setting. What type of visual inspiration have you drawn from for this series?

Mostly, I’m just trying to keep my world quiet so I can listen to myself. I often have dreams with crazy visuals, and it’s tough to remember it all, but I know I’ve got libraries of psychedelic stuff stored in my brain somewhere. I just try to trust that it’s there and let it appear.

And that all stems from the visuals I loved from my childhood. If anything, I’d say I was inspired by The Neverending Story and She-Ra, Return to Oz, The Secret of NIMH and Unico in the Island of Magic, too.

You’ve stated this series finds Amethyst “among the people.” How important is that aspect to how you approach the series and its title character?

It’s vital! Princess Amethyst is more accustomed to dealing with fellow (mostly adult) royals than she is with everyday people, but in this story, the royals turn on her. This forces her to deal with everyday people, but it turns out that slice-of-life Gemworld is actually pretty stunning. She gets to explore the world all over again, from a completely different angle.

I gave her two new teenage friends, and I think they’ll be a major highlight of the book. I’m working to make sure they don’t steal the spotlight too much, but it’ll be the three of them, taking on the world, each one riding a ridiculous animal, because again—no rules!

Amethyst #1, written and illustrated by Amy Reeder, is on sale February 26 in print and as a digital download.

Tags:

amethyst, amethyst comic, new amethyst comic, new amethyst series, Amy Reeder, amy reeder interview, amy reeder amethyst, amy reeder amethyst interview, wonder comics, wonder comics imprint, gemworld, fantasy comics, magic, dc universe, dcu, young justice, DC Nation, dc nation interview, albert ching

Reader CTA:

Read Now

Article Header Layout:

Standard Layout

Mon, 24 Feb 2020 18:00:00 +0000 Albert Ching 450741 at /blog/2020/02/24/amy-reeder-takes-us-back-to-gemworld-with-amethysts-latest-adventure#comments Art Academy - John Timms Draws Young Justice's Superboy /videos/art-academy-john-timms-draws-young-justices-superboy

<?php echo $entity->type; ?>

Art Academy - John Timms Draws Young Justice's Superboy

Welcome to the DC 24ֱ Art Academy, a series of art tutorials and interviews recorded at Comic-Cons featuring many of the gifted and unique artists working for DC today. I hope he’ll calm down in season 4 and get some emotional closure with Halo.

Big Barda and Mister Miracle

An interesting seed was planted when Superman saved Big Barda. How awesome would it be to follow that up by introducing Mister Miracle and giving us the awesome husband-wife superhero adventures we deserve?

Forager Goes to School

We saw Fred Bugg reveal his true form to his classmates during the ending montage. I want to see what Forager’s high school life will be like now that the student body knows he’s an alien bug. You could base the entire season off of that and I’d never get bored.

That’s my wish list! Honestly, even if none of these things happen, I’m fairly confident that season 4 is going to kick butt. The writers and producers of Young Justice have a great batting average, so whatever they come up with is sure to leave us all feeling whelmed.

For all of us fans who thought Young Justice was never coming back, this season felt like a gift. So, I’ve decided to give back by holding my own award ceremony in this column. Pretend there’s a red carpet here…and without further ado, allow me to present the Inside Outsiders 2019 Awards.

Best New Character: Forager aka Fred Bugg with two G’s.

Biggest Surprise: Helga Jace’s villainous monologue. Showrunners Greg Weisman and Branon Vietti have said multiple times that the show was able to return for a third season because of the intense reaction from fandom—that means you! Not only that, but the social media posts, binge-watching and fan conversations helped get the show renewed for a fourth season. You all deserve this award…this could never have happened without you! Did you like how this season turned out? If you did, then be proud of yourself because you helped make that happen!

Thank you for joining me for Inside Outsiders and letting me share my intense Young Justice fandom with all of you. This has been an amazing place to celebrate the show every week, and I look forward to bringing it back in one form or another when we return for season 4. I was always greeted with a loving hug, warm cookies and I never had to worry about being enslaved by the Anti-Life Equation. (My grandmother hadn’t learned how to unlock it yet.) This week on Young Justice: Outsiders, the Justice League tried to storm Granny’s Orphanage and found themselves brainwashed within minutes. The Team followed to try and rescue Halo, but the results were similar. Why do people keep going to Granny’s house? Don’t they remember what happened to Dick and Jefferson in “Unknown Factors”?

We’re one episode away from the three-part season finale, and this was quite a cliffhanger to end on. I’m a bit tired of examining the pessimistic scenarios where the Team might fail, so this week, I’m going to take a break from that to focus on the positive. You might be saying, “Josh, the Team has lost and Granny Goodness now controls the world. What is positive about that…unless…omigosh…is Granny controlling you too?”

No, I haven’t been enslaved by the Anti-Life Equation. I swear. (My grandmother never unlocked it, remember?) There is something positive in this episode, and it’s all thanks to Nightwing’s fever.

I’m not crazy for celebrating Nightwing’s fever—hear me out! During their battle on Granny’s Orphanage, Nightwing’s fever caused him to hallucinate an extended tribute to season one…and it was awesome! If you’re a longtime Young Justice viewer, you were probably grinning ear to ear as the Team was seen in their old costumes, spouting their classic catchphrases (It’s been too long since we’ve gotten a good “Hello Megan!”). The soundtrack even played the original theme music. But that wasn’t the part that got everyone’s attention. Nightwing’s fever dream featured Wally West, the original Kid Flash, back in action fighting alongside his friends. No offense Bart, because you’re a great Kid Flash, but I’ve really missed Wally.

Eventually Dick snapped back to reality, and we were once again reminded that Wally was gone. That moment hurt, but it was nice. When Artemis and Dick embraced over their mutual grief for Wally, I was holding back tears. The pair have both been trying to put Wally’s death behind them in their own way, while the fans have been dealing with it in their own way. The animated version of Wally West may not be a real person, but he was a character we watched grow and the fans emotionally connected with him. He may have been fictitious, but the emotions fans felt during his death scene were not. But the flipside of that is we were also able to feel real joy from Dick’s fever dream and seeing Wally again.

I’ve spoken in this column before about my tendency to live in denial, and that’s where I’ve been with Wally’s death. He’s a speedster who disappeared and how many times has that happened in the comics with the speedster showing up alive later? It’s practically a Flash rite of passage! There was no corpse, and anybody who’s a superhero fan knows that means a revival is probably coming. The producers, writers, voice actors and fictitious characters have all said he’s dead, but despite that, I keep on expecting Wally to come back when we least expect it. Maybe I need to come to terms with the fact that Wally is gone, just like Artemis and Nightwing have.

It’s been two years in the show’s universe since Wally disappeared (I’m still hesitant to say died), and it looks like Artemis has dealt with her grief and is getting ready to move on. She and her (now single) brother-in-law Will have been making eyes at each other, and it looks like something might be happening there.

Nightwing has avoided processing Wally’s death, which made Will uncomfortable in the episode “Private Security.” Dick called Will “Wally,” which made their mission even more awkward than it already was. The fever dream we got this week was a great way for Dick to process his feelings regarding Wally once and for all.

So, Dick’s dealt with it, Artemis has dealt with it, but there’s somebody who hasn’t—Brucely the dog! At the end of this week’s episode, he was seen resting by the hologram memorial of his former master, and earlier this season the pup was snuggled up with a Kid Flash doll.

Maybe I have something in common with this fictitious dog, and I need to accept that Wally isn’t coming back. But even if he’s not coming back, that doesn’t mean I can’t celebrate his memory, much like Dick did with his dream. So, let’s binge those old episodes again, and laugh at some of Wally’s funniest moments. Good night Kid Flash, you were a brave soldier.

What do you think my fellow Outsiders? Is it time to let Wally go, or am I giving up on the possibility of a revival too easily?
