Eventually, that belief waned and the gods stepped back from regularly interfering with humanity. But, centuries later, Ares returned to encourage war through his manipulation of mortals. This brought him into conflict with the Amazons and their champion, Wonder Woman. Over the years, he became the latter’s constant foe, intent on thwarting her mission of peace and understanding.

In recent years, however, Wonder Woman has learned that the being she fought so many times was not the real Ares. And now that the true God of War has been revealed, it’s uncertain what side he’ll be on in battles yet to come.

For more on Ares' history, <a Super Heroes like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash and Green Lantern are the greatest fighters for truth and justice the world has ever known. Collectively, however, they are a force of nature, leaders of a team of heroes who are only rivaled by the pantheons of gods from ancient mythology—the Justice League. The League is the earth’s first line of defense against threats too large for humanity to face alone.

For decades, the Justice League has saved humanity from the worst threats it has ever faced, from alien warlords to ancient demons and powerful sorcerers, to the God of Evil himself, Darkseid. And every time, they have overcome the odds and saved the human race.

Although the Justice League is not the world’s first superhero team, it is nevertheless the standard by which all other superhero teams are measured. Although the League has gone through several permutations over the years, and has broken up and gotten back together countless times, when the chips are down and the earth needs its greatest heroes back together on the front lines, the League always answers the call to duty.

For more on the Justice League's history, <a Cyber.

Dr. Cylvia Cyber—the original Dr. Cyber—was the twisted mastermind behind a global criminal network. She became Wonder Woman's archnemesis at a time when the Amazon was stripped of her powers and known only as Agent Diana Prince. During an early encounter with Diana, Cyber was disfigured when a rival criminal group threw hot coals on her face. Blaming Wonder Woman for the disfigurement, Cyber sought revenge. She began wearing a cybernetic gold mask to hide her scars and a high-tech cybernetic suit that enhanced her physical strength and allowed her to fire energy blasts. This original incarnation of Dr. Cyber died before the events of 1985’s Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Recently, an even more powerful version of the villain has arisen. This new Dr. Cyber is Dr. Adrianna Anderson, a renowned scientist and a close friend of Empire Industries CEO Veronica Cale. Adrianna was convinced by Cale, an avowed enemy of Wonder Woman, to use an experimental "cyber walker suit" to fight the Amazon. The suit, however, was damaged, and Adrianna's mind was trapped within its systems as she died. Her mind was later transferred to an A.I. system, where she became a digital construct going by the name Dr. Cyber. This new version of Cyber aided Cale in her plans against Wonder Woman.

<div Next year, the creative team returns with a third and final volume that finds Diana returning home to Paradise Island in an attempt to fend off a full-scale assault by one of her classic adversaries.

Now queen of the Amazons, Diana finds herself venturing through Paradise Island to enlist help from the different clans and assemble the full united force of the island’s legendary warriors for the first time in a millennium. The reason? Max Lord, who back in Man’s World is readying a massive attack on Wonder Woman’s home using his legions of deadly A.R.E.S. suits. For any chance of victory, Diana will need the help of every Amazonian clan. However, not all of them are willing to accept her place as queen—like Artemis and the New Spartans!

Wonder Woman: Earth One Vol. 3 won’t see print until March 2021, but as a special Wonder Woman Day treat, we’re pleased to give you an early sneak peek at this climactic volume featuring your first look at Paquette’s bow-wielding Artemis and her clan.

Hera! We’ve all been simply wonderstruck by Wonder Woman’s golden armor in the kaleidoscopic posters released for Wonder Woman 1984. But we also know our history—this is far from the first time Diana’s fashion choices have set the world abuzz. To maybe a greater extent than any other A-List DC Super Hero, Wonder Woman’s look has been radically interpreted time and again. Take a look at her costume and discover what went into its design here and then read up on five of the most daring pieces in Wonder Woman’s wardrobe below. Then get your speculation engines revving on whether any of them will be seen when Wonder Woman 1984 finally hits screens.

Leisure Suit Lariat

Perhaps the definitive Wonder Woman storyline of the Silver Age and/or Bronze Age began in Wonder Woman #178, when Diana found herself pulled in two directions. While her people prepare for a long-awaited journey for Themyscira to ascend to a higher plane of existence, Steve Trevor, the love of her life, has been framed for murder. Ultimately, Diana chose to remain in the mortal world, abandoning her mantle as Wonder Woman and the incredible powers that came with it. She ALSO chose a brand-new wardrobe, sporting a wide variety of those mad mod outfits of the 1960s. But most memorable of them all was her pure white color scheme, visually representing the tabula rasa she had made of her life. As the first issue of the storyline asks, without her connection to Paradise Island, without her powers, "Who Is Wonder Woman?" Later, the white jumpsuit from this era would return for Wonder Woman’s “One Year Later” storyline, as the signature look of her re-established civilian identity Diana Prince.

Wonder Wetsuit

As fans of Wonder Woman’s iconic 1970s-era TV series can attest, perhaps just as famous as Diana’s costume changes is the way she executes them. Throughout the series, an exuberant 180 degree pirouette is enough to magically change Diana’s street clothes into her Wonder Woman raiments—or whatever variety of her suit is called for. The most unique of these transformations may be her star-spangled wetsuit, complete with a tiara-patterned bathing cap which protects her carefully managed hair as she plumbs the depths of the Pacific coastline. And when a motorcycle chase is called for, Diana’s diving suit doubles as her chosen biker gear…with an added helmet for safety, of course.

Belts and Biker Shorts

And speaking of biker gear, well… Look, before you judge, understand that the '90s were a different time. All the DC Super Heroes were dressing like this, trying to out-extreme and over-edge each other. And with Diana having recently lost the title of Wonder Woman to her rival Artemis of the Bana-Mighdall, can you really blame a gal for trying something different? If you’d like to witness Diana’s journey through the wildstorm of the image-obsessed nineties, the story begins in Wonder Woman #93.

Jim Lee’s 21st Century Woman

It’s easy to forget after the much wider line reimagining that came with the New 52 in 2011, but one of the biggest comic book headlines of 2010 was the dramatic changes that writer J. Michael Straczynski and artist Jim Lee brought to Diana for the historic Wonder Woman #600, in both story and costume. Some frankly dubious claims were made at the time that this was Wonder Woman’s first significant costume change since her debut in 1941—though as we can clearly see from this list, no one putting forth such an idea was grasping a Golden Lasso of Truth. Once again divorced from her past on Paradise Island, Diana dug her '90s blue bomber jacket out of the closet, and paired it with a more sensible top and dark leggings (which some people went MAD over, let us tell you). In retrospect, the whole ensemble actually looks pretty nice. But it wouldn’t be long before Jim Lee drafted a redesign hewing closer to her classic look for the New 52.

Golden Eagle Armor

Eagle-eyed readers have already spotted a likely source of inspiration for the daring look showcased in the Wonder Woman 1984 posters and trailer: the gold-plated, winged armor of writer Mark Waid and artist Alex Ross’s Kingdom Come, as donned by Diana during a climactic battle of the gods. Nothing short of operatic in its scope, the Wagner-invoking Valkyrie look was certainly appropriate in capturing the dramatic tone of the material…though it has a certain Hawkwoman vibe to it. If this was in fact a starting point for the 2020 film’s armor, then, if anything, it seems the costume department may have been exercising RESTRAINT in their design. But who knows? If each new poster and trailer have taught us anything, it’s to expect the unexpected from Wonder Woman 1984.

Wonder Woman Day is tomorrow! even">Thursday, October 8, 2020 - 12:05

The '90s were a wild time for comics. The industry went from niche market to worldwide business leader. DC and Marvel became household names and a group of young superstar artists broke away from the big two system to found Image 24ֱ. A historical auction changed how the world saw the once disposable collectability of comic books and the speculation boom made sales soar with millions of issues flying off shelves each week.

But booms often lead to crashes and that's exactly what happened after the comics business bubble burst. The crash hit the industry in 1996, causing chaos and leaving many fans with boxes full of first issues that they thought they could build a nest egg with. As the comics world tried to look back at what went wrong, one writer was looking to the future and reshaping superhero comics forever. Grant Morrison, Howard Porter and John Dell were crafting a run that would quickly become DC's biggest seller. The juxtaposition of a deep understanding of what makes superhero comics work with an unprecedented level of risk-taking makes for a series that still feels exciting and bombastic over two decades later.

Though it's DC's flagship team and historically features the trinity of the company's most famous heroes, the '90s were rough on the members of the Justice League. Flagging sales for their spinoff series meant that something had to change. Slowly, a plan came together. A summer miniseries reintroduced readers to the Justice League of America, but it wasn't until November 1996 that Morrison, Porter and Dell reimagined the team under the title JLA. Like much of Morrison's best work, the series at first appears to be a back-to-basics take on superheroes. The team was a solid and simple one: Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman and Martian Manhunter. But really, he was building something much, much bigger.

The allegorical theological nature of superheroes has always bubbled under the surface. From Superman's obvious biblical influences to the fact that the omnipotent beings often act as the ultimate patriarchal and matriarchal figures, the idea of superheroes as gods is not a new one. But in JLA, Morrison puts it front and center. Here are the heroes that you grew up with definitively presented as all-powerful beings who are humanity's last line of defense. Heroes who can take down anything that comes at them from alien invaders to super-powered government goons. This vision of the JLA is so omnipotent that they can no longer reside on Earth and instead look down from the skies at the humans below from their moon base.

It's easy to imagine that a book which focuses so heavily on the idea of superheroes-as-gods could be dry or overly serious, but every page of JLA is bursting with hyper-muscled action. Superman is still rocking his mullet, Aquaman sports a bushy beard and a harpoon hand, and Batman has a sardonic sense of humor. Porter’s pencils and Dell’s inks bring a '90s extremity to every Big Hero moment. Just like Morrison's recent work on The Green Lantern, JLA is a distillation of what Morrison loves about superhero comics mixed with his own tendency for the strange.

In this world, the first antagonists that the superheroes are forced to face down are basically reflections of themselves. The Hyperclan are aliens who claim to be the saviors humanity needs. And just like they did when superheroes revealed themselves, the population of the world follows the Hyperclan's every move, even when they revert to extreme violence. Holding a mirror up to the idea of superheroes and their apparent policing of the world is a theme that runs through Morrison's best work and he really honed it during this 30+ issue run.

Though the series began as a back-to-basics take on the team, as the JLA grew Morrison inserted plenty of moments that belie those straightforward origins. The writer takes joy in introducing new legacy heroes like Kyle Rayner, Steel and Connor Hawke. Melding the old and the new is another tenet of Morrison's work that he built on here, crafting a sprawling team which changed and adapted as the rest of the DC Universe needed it too. One of the most-discussed moments of the series is the appearance of Blue Superman, who only ended up in JLA due to his editorial needs outside of the book, but the team manages to make it feel like a natural highlight.

If '90s comics have never really been your thing and the extreme nature of it all has always seemed a little more style than substance, then this is the series you need to read. Not only did it herald the modern age of meta-superhero stories, but it's also a grandiose, action-packed adventure that features more mullets, aliens, bad guys and heroes than you can shake a stick at.

Grant Morrison's first two storylines on JLA with artists Howard Porter and John Dell were recently published in a new DC Essential Edition. You can also read the full run in print or digitally.

Rosie Knight writes about comics, movies and TV for DC24ֱ.com, Nerdist, IGN and The Hollywood Reporter.
