After contracting a rare disease as a child, Gar’s parents were forced to administer an experimental genetic treatment involving the DNA of animals with known resistances to the disease as a potential cure.

The good news: their experiment worked. The bad news: it had some pretty dramatic side effects. It turned Gar’s skin, hair and eyes a bright green color and gave him the incredible ability to shapeshift into any animal at will…with just one important caveat. Any form Gar happens to take will also be completely green, no matter what. So much for being able to blend in.

Luckily, fading into the background has never been Gar’s goal in life. When he’s not using his powers to be a superhero, he spends his time as an amateur actor and social butterfly, winning friends and “adoring fans” (at least, in his head) wherever he goes. He’s quick with a joke and quicker with a smile, and remains upbeat, optimistic and flirtatious even through the worst of times, making him a valuable asset for the morale of any team he might find himself a part of.

Display Order:
<div That is until one fateful day when he makes a decision that will change his life forever…and unleash his inner beast.

Written by Kami Garcia and drawn by mega-popular artist Gabriel Picolo, the same team behind the New York Times bestselling Teen Titans: Raven, this brand new follow-up gives fans another resonant story about a beloved character and their journey towards finding their true self and individual identity.

Let’s break it down a bit so you can get excited about what’s to come!

Cover Crackdown:

Compared to some of the other covers we’ve seen on DC’s YA graphic novels, the Teen Titans: Beast Boy cover may seem plain and simple, but that is what is so great about it. The cover tells you everything you need to know about the story you are about to read without complicating things. Picolo’s popular art style is on full display, featuring the main reason we are all here—Gar, aka Beast Boy.

One of my favorite parts of the cover is that it shows Beast Boy as if he is mid- transformation, as his hands are seamlessly turning into those of a bear. It draws the reader in. Why is he turning into a bear? Well, you will just have to read on to find out, but it is certainly something that intrigues one to dive into the novel and find out what events lead up to his transformation.

Tell Me a Story:

Gar’s biggest goal at the beginning of the story is perhaps one that a lot of male teens suffer from: wanting to be big, muscular and impressive. To fit in and be comparable to his classmates is key for him. In fact, Garcia and Picolo make it so clear to readers what Gar’s goals are, that they go so far to include a few panels of him reading off of his “Senior Year Bucket List.” Perhaps showing the readers his bucket list is foreshadowing—will Gar really stick to that list, or will his wishes and hopes for his future change as the story progresses?

Despite having emotionally distant parents, Gar still receives support in other ways from his two best friends, animal activist and gamer-girl Stella and the buff and popular Daniel ‘the Tank’ Tanaka. To his friends, Gar is perfectly fine the way he is, but Gar longs to fit in with his bigger classmates and wants to impress the popular girls at school. He gets to the point he would just about do anything, including undertaking some dangerous stunts and pranks to get the attentions of his classmates.

When Gar comes to realize that the supplements his parents have been giving him for most of his childhood and teen years have been keeping him from gaining weight or growing, he quickly stops taking the pills.

Almost immediately, Gar notices a huge difference in his body, as he suddenly grows tall and gains muscle. His newfound popularity empowers him, but he soon notices something else that’s empowering—and I mean that literally. Gar develops superpowers that allow him to turn into any animal at whim. Unfortunately, Gar and his friends aren’t the only ones that have noticed his changes and powers. It turns out a dark, mysterious stranger named Slade Wilson has been monitoring Gar throughout all of these events. Uh oh!

Let’s Talk Art:

As a fan of Picolo’s art in general, reading this graphic novel was an absolute delight. I’ve long adored the way Picolo draws the Teen Titans in his “Casual Teen Titans” online series, so I knew what I was in for when it comes to his art. I love seeing how Picolo seems to have incorporated himself into Gar’s designs, especially the hair, which gives Gar a special je ne sais quoi. He’s charming! I especially liked the use of softer colors throughout the story, so that during the climax of the story when Gar turns into a big, bright green bear, the color really pops compared to the rest of the story.

Dialog Discussion:

Just like the art, Garcia’s writing is a delight. You can clearly tell that the author and artist worked hand in hand to really create a seamless story. I think my favorite characters are the main three—Gar, Tank and Stella. Their vibes and interactions as best friends are heartwarming when they’re together as a group, but you also really get a sense for each three individually. Each one has their own uniquely written personalities that makes them special. Credit to Garcia for really finding that balance—it’s not always easy to achieve!

Favorite Teen Titan:

Well, of course this book’s favorite Teen Titan is Beast Boy himself! He’s such an adventurous character and although his powers scare him initially at first, as a reader, they are just the most fantastic type of powers one could imagine. You’re genuinely curious to see what animals Gar will turn into depending on the situation, which gets you further and further invested in the narrative. Of course, his upbeat and fun personality really makes for an exciting plot line as well!

Most Crushworthy Character:

Sorry Gar, but for me the most crushworthy character would actually have to be Daniel, aka ‘Tank.’ In this story there are some classic examples of types of high school boys. You have Mike, the popular jock who turns out to be a complete ass, and then you have Gar, who is the typical loveable, yet dorky, kid. Tank falls somewhere in between and that is what makes him so crushworthy. He’s big and tall and popular and can fit in with the jocks pretty well, but he’s also kind and goofy enough to be best friends with Gar. He is the best of both worlds. Plus, doing well in school is important to Tank, which shows he has brains and determination. A great friend and character all around!

Perfect Food Pairing:

I always have to do this topic whenever I write a Book Breakdown, it’s too much fun. For this graphic novel, I would definitely say to try and challenge yourself to eat something spicy! There is an important scene in this story where Gar is challenged to eat one of the world’s spiciest peppers: a Carolina Reaper. This is a turning point in the book where Gar begins to discover some of his newfound powers and he is actually able to eat the pepper no problem…unlike his fellow competitors who had their insides practically burst into flames.

Maybe don’t eat one of the world’s hottest peppers while reading this, but it would be fun to challenge yourself to try something spicier than you normally would. Maybe you can beat Gar in the next hot pepper challenge!

Teen Titans: Beast Boy by Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo is now available in bookstores, comic shops, libraries and as a digital graphic novel.

Amanda Levine loves everything DC, especially Harley Quinn, whom she often cosplays. The result was rave reviews from fans and critics, and spots on New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly’s bestseller lists.

One year later, Garcia and Picolo have reunited, but instead of the brooding melancholy of Rachel Roth, it’s the infectious exuberance of Gar Logan in Teen Titans: Beast Boy, which takes place concurrently with the events of Raven. In the latest DC Graphic Novel for Young Adults, Gar is a funny and friendly senior at Bull Creek High School looking for a way to finally stand out among his classmates…before getting his wish in a way he never expected.

DC Nation talked with Garcia and Picolo about the updated origin story of Teen Titans: Beast Boy, what they’re looking forward to fans discovering in the book, and their feelings on the warm reaction to Raven.

Readers of all ages really responded to Teen Titans: Raven. What has the book’s success meant to the both of you? How has it felt to hear from readers who have embraced this take on classic DC characters?

Kami Garcia: It’s a huge honor to see how much readers love our version of Raven. To me, she’s every girl—self-conscious and trying to figure out how to define herself in a world that wants to tell her who she has to be. She has to find her inner strength and believe in herself in order to overcome the obstacles I throw at her in the story.

Gabriel Picolo: Raven was my first book with DC, so for me, there was a lot of expectation if it was going to be a hit. It felt so great to see fans showing up at signings and conventions to get their book signed and talk a bit. I flew to the US when the book dropped for a signing tour.

The biggest highlights for me were New York City and Los Angeles, where we did a signing at Barnes and The Grove respectively. So many people showed up that the bookstores ran out of chairs, and we saw this huge crowd standing. Some peeps were cosplaying Raven and the other Titans! I can’t explain how moved and grateful I felt in that moment.

Even though there are clear tonal and aesthetic similarities between the two books, Beast Boy is of course a very different character than Raven. What do you love about the character, and what aspects of Gar were you most excited to explore in this book?

Picolo: I love the way he can shapeshift into any creature at will, so my favorite aspect was drawing the various stages of his transformations! Earlier in the book he still doesn’t know how to fully transform, but he gets the animal’s powers on a molecular level. Telling that visually was a such a fun challenge.

As this is a solo book, Gar is not only the comic relief guy. It was very different for me as a fan of this character to draw him experiencing frustration, anger and other complex feelings.

Garcia: Gar is a sweetheart through and through. Even when he’s brooding, he’s still lovable. The media is constantly sending the message that bad boys are cool. I love seeing a genuinely sweet boy next door as the hero of the story.

Like Raven, this graphic novel stays close to the character’s origins while updating them with a distinctly current sensibility. What was your process in creating this version of Beast Boy?

Garcia: I’m a fan and Beast Boy is such a cool character, so I didn’t want to change his personality. I wanted to dig deeper and add layers, so readers get to see him do more than crack jokes.

In this series, Gabriel and I take a more grounded approach to the characters with less focus on them being superheroes, and more emphasis on them being teens. The biggest challenge was how to handle Gar changing into animals so it would feel realistic. He still changes, but he also channels the powers of animals when his fight-or-flight response is triggered.

Gabriel, Raven was your first full-length graphic novel. In what ways did you evolve as an artist between Raven and Beast Boy?

I would say the biggest improvement was speed. Also, I feel more comfortable with the medium, so I’m trying new panels, compositions and new ways of telling stories.

What are you most excited for readers to see in this book?

Garcia: I’m incredibly proud of this book because Gabriel and I really worked to develop Gar without changing the core of his character. Early on, a few people at DC said, “He doesn’t have to literally turn into an animal.” These stories aren’t bound by canon so the folks at DC were just trying to remind me that I wasn’t bound to the same rules as writers working in the DCU. But my answer was still, “Yes, he does.” Gabriel and I just had to find a way to make it work and I think we did. We also created some cool friends for Gar!

Picolo: One of my favorite scenes was when Gar opens his social media to see that he went viral. There’s not a lot of action going on, but this is the slice of life sort of scene that I love to draw.

Teen A team of classic DC teen heroes that doesn’t take itself seriously at all might not sound very…well, super. No angst? No gritty drama? Not even one huge super-powered battle against nefarious super-villains to determine the fate of the multiverse?

But that’s exactly what makes Teen Titans GO! so much fun to watch. This is a show that never hesitates to make fun of itself. While you might balk at the idea of a kids show packed with enthusiastic yelling, fart jokes and DC characters with their personalities multiplied by a thousand, Teen Titans GO! does it all fearlessly and breathlessly to remind viewers that superheroes can still be just plain fun.

Any discussion of this incarnation of the Teen Titans has to start with how extraordinary the voice acting is in every single episode. Tremendous. Fantastic. Amazing. I don’t have enough adjectives to describe the brilliant way the regular cast of Titans performs in each episode with joyful abandon. Voicing different versions of the heroes they first portrayed in the original Teen Titans, Greg Cipes, Scott Menville, Tara Strong, Hynden Walch and Khary Payton are superstars. They’re so comfortable both with their characters and with each other as an ensemble that nothing is off-limits, from singing silly songs to making absurd sound effects with their mouths to even playing their real-life selves.

Speaking of those songs, they may be ridiculous, but they’re also undeniably catchy. A few episodes of Teen Titans GO! and you and your kids will sing every time you cook waffles together or get a hankering for some pie. Watching as a family results in laughing together now, and again later when songs and jokes pop back into your head out of nowhere.

The short episodes also mean that the songs and zippy dialogue are delivered at breakneck speed. Blink-and-you’ll-miss-them visual gags fly by on the screen, along with homages to DC characters both hiding in the background and up front and center. The Catwoman clock that hangs in the Titans’ living room and Zatanna’s poster taped to Raven’s wall are just two of the most delightful. And, yes, there are over-the-top villains you’ll recognize from the pages of your favorite comic books. I have just five words that should convince you to immediately begin your binge: “Weird Al” Yankovic voices Darkseid. You’re welcome.

While there are certainly juvenile jokes and bonkers adventures, the most enjoyable thing about these Titans is that each one finds happiness in being unapologetically themselves. Beast Boy, Starfire, Cyborg, Raven and Robin embrace their quirks and their passions without a shred of shame. (Especially Robin.) The things that you love about their characters in the comics and other appearances—Robin’s unyielding dedication, Starfire’s innocence, Cyborg’s curiosity and genuine passion—are on full display and magnified exponentially.

These Titans even have their own unique traits that set them apart from other versions of themselves, like Cyborg’s love of The Golden Girls and other ’80s pop culture, Raven’s insistence that the elderly are simply the cutest and Beast Boy’s obsession with veggie burritos. Even the Batman of Teen Titans GO! has a passionate delight for watching television with his BFF and constant companion Commissioner Gordon. Their giggle-filled bromance is hands down one of the most delightful things about the animated series.

Teen Titans GO! delivers quick bursts of laughter and glee whenever you need them. The animated series encourages viewers to let go of their superhero expectations and just enjoy the crazy ride no matter how far off course it can go. Tune in and you start to feel like a kid again. I don’t know about you, but I think that’s quite a superpower.

The first four seasons of Teen Titans GO! are currently available on Hulu and episodes air Fridays on Cartoon Network. Visit our official Teen Titans GO! page for more news, articles and craziness featuring the animated team.

Kelly Knox writes about all-ages comics and animation for DC24ֱ.com and her writing can also be seen on IGN, Nerdist, Geek & Sundry and more.
